  1. I live in Samui, but only because thats where the work is. I could think of lots of better places with nicer people, beaches and scenery. I NEVER think of it as paradise, its just home to me.

BTW, this thread is a bit cheesy, but there is nothing wrong in saying nice things - yes, that includes you Taxexile!

    Sometimes cheese is agreeable!

    Good old fashioned cheddar.

It doesn't always have to be Stilton (i.e. barbed with mould)

    Cheese and crackers anyone?

  2. The thread was compiled of people saying what they loved about the island, not saying that it's better than this destination or that destination and also, this time, not saying what they dislike about it: there are plenty of other threads for that.

    Surely a worthwhile exercise, no?

Perhaps if Post #5 was the OP, then yes... a one-sided exercise in eyeglass rose-tinting might be worthwhile.

Perhaps we can agree on a balance between rose tinted specs and jet black shades then.

  4. this cheesy syrupy nauseatingly naive thread reads like it has been penned by the tourist authority of thailand (samui office) ass kissers society. :D

    :o

Another classic from taxexile... and he got bites too!!!

    :D

It certainly needed to be said... that's for sure.

What some see as paradise is definitely not for all. I was turned off by the outrageous pricing on so many different things, the non-stop construction noise, and the general atmosphere very disappointing.

There are so many other, better places to go in Thailand... but to each his own.

I'm not sure it did have to be said John.

Whilst I'd agree with you that there may be better destinations in Thailand (depending on what you're interests are and what you're looking for), it doesn't diminish the fact that lots of people do love Samui.

I ate a grasshopper once, that is my claim to fame.

But here in europe i often eat snails etc. so it's almost the same.

    HAGGIS is delicious.

Lots of 'adventurous' food in Thailand. The most bizzare I've eaten probably would be those small, clear shrimp that are actually still alive when you pop them into your mouth.

Though subdued somewhat, probably by the chilly that they've been marinated in, they do still give the odd twitch. Very disconcerting the first time you try them...

Also, my father (he's Scottish) would be pleased that the delights of Haggis have spread to Switzerland.

As a boy on holiday up on the coast of Argylleshire, I used to chase them round the mountainside.

Gisele - You mentioned that your husband bought a bag full of bugs as a snack, have you ever tried them? I must admit that I have seen them for sale on some streets but have never been adventurous enough to try them.....

I have to admit a passion for deep fried grasshoppers.

Thai friends swear that they go perfectly with Mekong and if eaten before bedtime ensure a good night's sleep.

I agree that Mekong compliments them very well - the good night's sleep, however may be more a result of the Mekong than the grasshoppers!

Addictive once you aquire a taste for them, interestingly the smaller they are, the tastier.

  7. There's been a further development.

In an apparent move to combat the further spread of bird flu in Thailand, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has rushed through radical new legislation banning hen parties throughout the Kingdom, it was reported in the Bangkok Post today.

  9. Found my pal in a terrible state yesterday.

He was convinced he'd contracted bird flu.

After calming him down I ventured to find out what symptoms he'd been experiencing.

"Recently it's been taking me two hours to get ready for a night out, I've started speaking complete boll*cks and find it impossible to park my car !" came his reply.

  11. Malice....

Its amazing how people over react, isnt it? I know hundereds of people on the island and fail to recall one single time that any of these people had a bad expereince with the 'mafia'.

The mafia are simply powerfull business people. If you dont ###### with them, they wont ###### with you. You could spend decades on the island without even knowing they exist.

    Agreed.

Let's get this whole thing into perspective.

Koh Samui has developed rapidly over the last few years, as has Pattaya, Phuket, etc.

However, in Thailand, where ever I may be, I still feel etremely safe.

If as a foreigner here you are conducting yourself legally, interaction with the Thai 'mafia' will be non-existant.

You may come into contact with the standard corruption, e.g. paying off a traffic cop for forgetting to put your seatbelt on, but hey, it beats the astronomical 'official' fine you'd have to pay in your own country.

  12. Hang him! Hang him! What a load of muppets you all are.

That would be a bit extreme....but ok I go along with it.... :D

If this is the way you want to see Patters go, then we shall take him back to his hotel, tuck him into bed and tell him what a naughty boy he was.....And when he does it again we shall smile tolerently and say it is OK...he really doesnt mean any harm. :o

Get real !!!!.....Pattaya needs this type of tourist like it needs a nuclear explosion....whether he was a Brit, Aussie, Yank or whatever.... :D

    Finally!! We're getting the point!

Undesirables come from every nation - and yes, we don't need them.

Also, re: the 'enlightened' ones who are calling for increases to the air fares. Whilst I agree that the fact that lower priced long haul travel obviously means that more destinations are available to more people and as a result of more people going anywhere, you'll obviously get a larger pwercentage of undesirables (it's a numbers game), I think it's a bit simplistic and blinkered to equate financial standing with a particuler kind of behaviour.

Case in point - how many young couples/families have you met that may not be rolling in money but are far more sensible, well behaved, BETTER COMPANY than certain 'well off' drunken, self opinionated bores?

  13. Hey Im a Kiwi....doing time in Aus..we normaly give the sports lessons.... :o:D but really too many of your nations thugs in Patts.

Truly feel sorry for the girls that go with these cretins.

They are the worst part of the Pattaya scene.

    UK Trailer Trash.

Come on lads, we know you're feeling a bit peeved after the recent rugby and cricket lessons we've given you but after witnessing those brainless, racist idiots in Sydney recently, surely you should take a look at ypour own countrymens' shortcomings.

After all, most Brits are fine upstanding gentlemen.

Apologies for branding you an Ozzie, Kiwi.

However, let's look at this scientifically.

Most Kiwis I meet on my travels are good guys, however I do meet some undesirables.

Most Brits I meet on my travels are good guys, however, there are definitely some undesirables.

The fact is that both our nations have an undesirable element which is a small percentage of the population, but, because there are about 20 times more Brits than Kiwis and again, considerably more Brits than Ozzies, it appears that there are lots of British thugs.

Also, amongst all groups of Brits, you will gat a certain amount of Oz 'wannabes' masquerading as Brits.
