Abandoned, Derelict, Decaying Locations Around Thailand
diznax replied to diznax's topic in Photography and the Arts
These pictures aren't from Thailand, but very close. I drove from BKK & through northern Malaysia on an abandoned site road trip in July & checked out 17 locations. Though I'd share a few pictures: a derelict jungle resort, 1930's mansion in Penang, former leper colony and shopping mall. I also wrote a photo essay about the experience for the Guardian, discussing the interest in abandoned sites and what draws us to them. -

Those who pass through Cha-am are likely familiar with this long-closed dinosaur-themed crocodile (and snake?) farm on the side of the highway. I'd never heard of it but saw it while driving down to Malaysia & had to do a U-turn. I read that the snakes 'escaped' into the local area when the farm closed. -

Haven't posted here in a while! Below are a few pictures from some places I've explored over the past 8 months or so. A village (the black & whites), a large temple project, a BMX track, a beachside resort & condo and a restaurant. Also, if anyone is interested in the history of the Ghost Tower (Sathorn Unique), this is an excellent documentary done by my friend Dana. He interviewed me at the end regarding urban exploration photography, but more interestingly he interviewed Thai economists and a number of individuals familiar with the history of the building. It's very well made and thorough & provides an in-depth analysis of what happened with this particular building and a better understanding of what happened to many other building projects which were unfinished due to the 'Tomyumgoong' financial crisis of 1997. -

Dax here. The post above about 'breaking and entering' is an outright lie. I always ask permission if there is a guard, caretaker or owner if I've been able to attain contact details. I absolutely never 'break and enter', never do damage to private property or spray graffiti or anything like that. If I am told 'no' by a person in charge of the property or if there are clear 'no trespassing' signs, I do not enter the property, as it is not worth the stress or risk. If there is nobody to ask & no signs saying not to enter, then I go in. Many locations, esp outside of urban areas, are very open, as I think many who live here know. Often, entering the locations is a matter of parking and simply walking on, with no people/walls/gates to be found in the area, as with the two in the linked story above. In addition, before going I have usually been informed by Thai friends who've been to the locations themselves. I go in, take pictures, and am on my way. I have never 'broken and entered' anything, and saying so is straight up slanderous. Mike is just salty because, several years ago, I posted a drone picture in the bpg Facebook page, he commented about it being prohibited, I poked fun of him for being a bit pedantic as did a few others in the group, and apparently his feelings are still hurt. I no longer post in that group because I don't really have interest in the group & my close friend Dennie no longer runs it. I love discovering the history of forgotten places and trying to answer questions about their past and present. I find them interesting. If I'm able to share my experiences and pictures with others then I'm happy to do so. I do not consider myself 'famous' or anything like that. I think most people understand that, but along the way there have been a few negative individuals whose opinions really don't mean anything. I'm only responding to this one due to the false accusation. I always really appreciate when I hear from people who have enjoyed seeing my pictures and backstories. I'm glad to share them.

Looking for some input from anyone who knows about Buddha statues. I saw this one at an abandoned temple the other day, first I've ever seen a Buddha with hands covering face. I'm very curious as to the meaning. Any ideas? It resembles the 'see no evil' depicted in the popular Japanese 'three wise monkeys' statues, but I think it's very unusual to see this depiction in a Buddha statue...or maybe not, but I've certainly never seen it before. Cheers My full series from here: https://www.daxward.com/The-Abandoned-Country-Temple/ -

Hello everyone. Can't believe how active this forum post has been over the past 6 years! I have a request for those who may be able to help me. I'm planning to document abandoned resorts in southern Thailand this summer, especially those affected by the pandemic. Does anyone happen to have any location suggestions? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. You can reply here or PM me, also available via my website or fb page. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help! Pictured is an abandoned resort in Chiang Mai that no longer exists, shot in 2017. -
He's still hounded by the press because justice wasn't served and he's been allowed to enter the country and leave whenever he wants in secret (his social media feeds have shown this). He killed a cop when he was driving drunk and high on coke, then fled the scene, dragging the cops body under his ferrari, then blamed the butler. The family paid a few million baht (3 last I heard, roughly 100k USD), which is nothing for a family of billionaires (in USD). Boss hasn't spent a day in jail for manslaughter just because he's wealthy and connected, epitomises everything that is unjust in Thailand and elsewhere, and frankly he deserves a lifetime of being harassed, at least until he actually pays a real price, jail time, which we all know won't happen. If a drunk rice farmer had run him down, he'd likely still be in prison. No idea who was at fault in this recent accident, maybe it actually was the foreigner, but it's understandable why people would be instantly pessimistic.

Hello, I've been working on documenting disused/abandoned structures around Thailand for the past year or so via photo series', and am always on the lookout for new subjects. There are a seemingly endless number of such locations around the country, and each one has it's own unique character and usually some beauty to be found amongst the decay and ruin. I've started this topic both as a means for us to share locations of unique abandoned places around the country, and for forum members to share images that convey their perspective of these places. I look forward to seeing others' images and of hearing their experiences. Please include any key info about the sites including local directions(drop a Google Maps pin if you can) or possible dangers/trespassing need-to-know's, as we certainly don't want anyone to get in any trouble by visiting guarded private property. * Please note that the Sathorn Unique 'ghost tower' is, as of the time of writing, off limits & blocked off via fence, with threats of prosecution to trespassers. Also, it's well-known and documented. It would be great to use this forum as a means to share lesser-known derelict locations around the country. I'll start with a few directions to some sites I've either discovered or heard about and visited - Abandoned train cars in Samut Sakhon - Their Location Abandoned Batman Nightclub Pattaya - Location Airplane Graveyard in Bangkok - Location Abandoned Jittapawan College Pier - Location Abandoned Mansions in Nakhon Pathom - This site is inhabited by two families and they have requested for me not to share their location so as to avoid masses of tourists. Apologies.
