  1. Rishi Sunak has said he acted "decisively" in sacking Nadhim Zahawi as chairman of the Conservative Party yesterday following a row over his tax affairs. Speaking in Country Durham at the launch of his government's emergency care plan, the prime minister defended his handling of situation and stressed his commitment to "integrity" and the need to follow proper processes.
  2. Boris Johnson has claimed Vladimir Putin told him he could kill him with a missile, in a call ahead of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The former prime minister said the Russian President remarked: “I don’t want to hurt you, but with a missile, it would only take a minute.” Mr Johnson said the “extraordinary” conversation took place in February after he had visited Kyiv in a last-ditch attempt to show Western support for Ukraine amid growing fears of a Russian assault. However the Kremlin has insisted that the reports of Putin's comments to Mr Johnson are a "lie."
  3. People cut back on video streaming services in their droves last year as the cost of living rose sharply. Analysts Kantar said the number of paid-for video streaming subscriptions in the UK fell by two million, from 30.5 million to 28.5 million. Demand had picked up again at Christmas, Kantar said, but people were "quickly looking to cut back again". Inflation, the rate at which prices rise, is at its highest level for about 40 years, hitting people's finances. "Brits' love of streaming remains as strong as ever, but the effect of high inflation meant consumers were forced to make difficult choices to balance their finances," said Dominic Sunnebo, Kantar's global director of entertainment on demand.
  4. Barrett Strong, a pivotal figure in the history of Motown Records, has died at the age of 81. He sang the label's first major hit, Money (That's What I Want), in 1959, and went on to co-write classic songs like I Heard It Through the Grapevine, War and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone. Those hits were "revolutionary in sound and captured the spirit of the times", Motown founder Berry Gordy said in a written tribute to the musician. No cause of death has been disclosed.
  5. At least 28 people have been killed in an explosion at a mosque in the Pakistani city of Peshawar. The blast happened when the mosque was packed with worshippers and more than 150 people were injured. A section of the building was destroyed, and officials say people are buried under the rubble. The cause of the explosion is unclear, but an official said police had been the target and most of those who had died were part of the police force. Security officials said a bomber sitting in the front row of the mosque had blown himself up. No group has admitted carrying it out. Muhammad Ijaz Khan, Peshawar capital city police officer, told local media that between 300 and 400 police officials were present in the area at the time of the blast.
  6. Mining giant Rio Tinto says it is working with authorities to try to find a radioactive capsule that went missing in Western Australia this month. "We recognise this is clearly very concerning and are sorry for the alarm it has caused," the firm told the BBC. The casing contains a small quantity of radioactive Caesium-137, which could cause serious illness if touched. It was lost between the town of Newman and the city of Perth, a distance of roughly 1,400km (870 miles). "As well as fully supporting the relevant authorities, we have launched our own investigation to understand how the capsule was lost in transit," Rio Tinto's Iron Ore chief executive Simon Trott said in a statement. "As part of this investigation we are working closely with the contractor to better understand what went wrong in this instance," he added.

"It is the oldest mummy, complete and covered in gold, ever found in Egypt," he said, adding that it was "the most amazing discovery." The ex-general will replace Milos Zeman, whose second term ends in March.
