A Washington DC police officer who was given an award for his work during the Capitol riot has been arrested on suspicion of leaking information to the far-right Proud Boys. Prosecutors say Shane Lamond, 47, had been in touch with Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio since July 2019. Mr Lamond was charged with obstruction of justice and three counts of making false statements to investigators. The accused, of Stafford, Virginia, pleaded not guilty in court on Friday. The obstruction charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, while false statements can be punished by a sentence of up to five years each. Mark Schamel, a lawyer for Mr Lamond, said the officer's role required him to contact extremist groups, "yet he does not, nor has he ever, supported their views". "The jury will see the fallacy of these unfairly levied allegations when the evidence is presented," Mr Schamel said in a statement.

Revealed: King Charles's Romanian hideaway where His Majesty will enjoy the simple life in the land of Dracula to recuperate from his Coronation (without his newly crowned Queen) Camilla will not accompany him, preferring to remain in her more modern Wiltshire home. Although she is very happy for her hard-working, 74-year-old husband to enjoy some uniquely traditional 'r and r'. The King will sleep in a simple wooden bed, drink hand-pressed apple juice – and maybe even judge the local lawn-mowing competition, as he has done on previous visits. It may come as a surprise that the British sovereign, who is actually distantly related to Vlad the Impaler, is incredibly passionate about Romania. He loves the country so much that he secretly bought a run-down former farmhouse in Zalanpatak, close to the Carpathian Mountains, several years ago with the help of local landowner Count Kalnoky, his great friend (and another distant relative of Vlad, said to be the inspiration for Dracula).

The paper reported that the cleaner had no medical experience. The incident came to light after a hospital manager spotted the cleaner - bloody gauze pads in hand - in the operating theater, it reported.

The US government is currently engaged in what could be one of the most costly games of chicken in history. If Democrats and Republicans do not agree to allow the US to borrow more - or, in their language, raise the debt ceiling - the world's biggest economy will default on its $31.4 trillion (£25tn) debt. They have to reach an agreement by the ominous sounding "X-date" of 1 June. If they do not, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has warned the impact would be "absolutely devastating". So what would that mean for the economy - and you?

The Senate on Wednesday passed a resolution, with bipartisan support, disapproving of the Biden administration’s "public charge" rule on which forms of welfare legal immigrants can receive without being ineligible for a green card, despite a White House threat to veto. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, forced a vote on a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act — which allows lawmakers to object to rules being put forward by the administration.

Russian diamond imports to the UK will be banned in the latest sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. Imports of Russian-origin copper, aluminium and nickel will be blocked, under legislation to be introduced later this year. Rishi Sunak said the UK must show "violence and coercion do not reap rewards" ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima. The Russian diamond industry was worth $4bn (£3.2bn) in exports in 2021. The UK government said it was also planning to target 86 more people and companies connected to President Vladimir Putin, including people who are "actively undermining the impact of existing sanctions".
