  1. Alzheimer's drug lecanemab hailed as momentous breakthrough The first drug to slow the destruction of the brain in Alzheimer's has been heralded as momentous. The research breakthrough ends decades of failure and shows a new era of drugs to treat Alzheimer's - the most common form of dementia - is possible. Yet the medicine, lecanemab, has only a small effect and its impact on people's daily lives is debated. And the drug works in the early stages of the disease, so most would miss out without a revolution in spotting it. Lecanemab attacks the sticky gunge - called beta amyloid - that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. Full story from BBC

  3. With so many job vacancies, is it beneficial that more people want to come here? Amy Lewis reports Net migration to the UK has climbed to a record half a million, driven by “unprecedented world events” including the war in Ukraine and the end of lockdown restrictions, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Around 504,000 more people are estimated to have moved to the UK than left in the 12 months to June 2022, up sharply from 173,000 in the year to June 2021. This is the highest net migration since the Second World War and is far higher than pre-Brexit levels. Home Office estimates, meanwhile, indicate that around 89,000 Ukraine Scheme visa-holders arrived in the UK up to the year ending June 2022. Full story

Since November 2006, passengers taking liquid in their cabin luggage have been restricted to clear plastic bags holding no more than 100ml, which must be shown to security staff. Wave of strike action hits Royal Mail, universities, and schools Postal workers from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) on the picket line on Thursday.Credit: PA Royal Mail workers, university lecturers and teachers went on strike on Thursday as industrial unrest continues to spread across the country in disputes over pay, jobs and conditions. Picket lines are being mounted outside postal delivery and sorting offices, universities and schools as unions edge closer to co-ordinated industrial action. It is shaping up to be one of the biggest walkouts of the year. Talks have been held between leaders of unions involved in the disputes with the aim of taking joint action, such as holding strikes on the same day. Full article
