  1. I’ve read a few articles in recent years pointing to the rise in the number of middle aged men who have bought motorcycles to recapture their youth. They always have a mid life crisis angle. It turns out quite a few are dying and/or getting seriously injured because they don’t have the same eyesight and reflexes as their youth.

Thailand expats are not exactly the same, but many do as the locals do and buy scooters and motorcycles. Many are new to these. Given their age it’s a recipe for disaster. You have a chance in a car, but it’s almost impossible to fall off or crash a motorcycle and escape without injury. Just take the baht bus.

    He was a lowlife

Yes, I know better now. My only advice to anyone is never loan money to anyone.

It's not always deceit. More likely they CAN'T pay you back. That's why they ask in the first place, no money! A lot of people want to pay it back but can't get that job or whatever so it just turns into an avoidance issue.

The man in question had a new job as a retail director, so he was well compensated. I only got my money back when I contacted his CEO privately ... I'm afraid on this occasion he thought he'd found a soft touch. I hadn't seen him for 10 years so the fact that he approached me probably meant that he'd already gone through a steady supply of suckers.

I have found it best to have a rule not to loan money in Thailand. In 19 years I have lost only 10,000 b which is not bad. If I see a good friend in need I would rather make the offer to help him out with a gift of money which was very much appreciated during Covid when I was stuck in my home country.

That makes sense. My loan days are over. Never again.

I once lent money to a family member. Took 5 years to get it back.

I’m impressed by your perseverance. I didn’t care about the money, I was more enraged by his deceit. If he had called me and said it might take a year or two, I would have been fine - but when he cut communication I realised he was duping me from the beginning.

I have met many foreigners here living in Thailand and one Californian man I was good friends with . He needed help with getting a visa and I loaned him 25000 to pay an agent . Now 8 months later still no return of the money even though he promised the money back in 2 months.

I do not want to see him again as I don't want any trouble.

I have done something similar, with an ex work colleague, who borrowed money that he promised to pay back in 6 weeks, then 3 months, then never heard from him, and he wouldn’t respond to my emails. When I finally reached him (long story) he accused me of harassing him! I’m an obstinate character, so long story, I got my money back.

I was very aware that it is unwise to lend money, but I went ahead anyway. I learned a valuable lesson.

  7. Two old guys swapping punches outside a cafe in Dumaguette over an issue that didn't involve them.

A youngish American guy started a Dive Centre and needed funds for its expansion. Apparently another American retiree (ex Cop) didn't want to invest and (in the opinion of the young guy) tried to put off others from investing. So the young guy was hacked off with him, and bad mouthed him, and his Filipina fiancé.

So the young guy's business partner (an old American guy) and the ex Cop's American future brother in law, had a shouting match that turned into handbags at dawn.

Reminds me of an episode of that American comedy classic "Soap".

Moral of the story ... avoid Dumaguette and American ex pats.

If Trump is such a danger to the world, why aren't the Dems willing to manoeuvre Biden out of the way and replace him with someone who can beat Trump in the election?

Surely by keeping a cognitively declining Biden in place it almost guarantees a Trump presidency!

Or do you think Biden is going to miraculously get better and run a successful campaign?

I've no idea. I don't know how easy it would be to manoeuvre Biden out of the race. But I don't think a Trump win is a foregone conclusion ... there's a long way to go.

He only gets 1 vote. Sadly lots of stupid people voted Biden and they got

    Higher inflation

    Chaos at borders

    2 wars

    Lots of excuses

Now the polls say Biden loses

So you are desperate to vote for a guy like Trump, who refused to visit a US military cemetery in Europe because he didn't want to honour "losers and suckers"?

    You get what you deserve.
