Why are they being allowed to enter , Malaysia saying CANNOT
Not true. Malaysia is just as greedy as the Thais. They are making it known they welcome Chinese tourists from any city but Wuhan.
"has also opted not to revise its tourism goals established under its “Visit Malaysia 2020” strategy, and its tourist minister said any shortfall created by events in China could be balanced by gains elsewhere. “The target is still 30 million [tourist arrivals],” Mohammadin Ketapi said. “If there is a small impact on that it is probably from Wuhan. But we are not talking about people from Australia or from England … That target remains as it is. China is very important to us. We are not here to say that Beijing has a virus and they cannot travel here. We’re talking about Wuhan only.”

Exactly, you can't divide the number of deaths by the total number of cases while new cases stream into the hospital at an exponentially increasing rate. Like you say, one must consider cases with known outcomes, after the flow stops.
The best I have seen was a study of the first 41 confirmed cases whose outcomes were all known. In that study, 1/3 required ICU and/or life support and 5 died, which is a 12.2% death rate. And that is a death rate based on an ICU available. I doubt that will be the case now with 1000s of suspected cases and overflowing hospitals. Many are being sent home.
Yes, that study is available here:
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext
6 out of the first 41 patients died for a mortality rate of 14.6%.

That's quite a story. Canada sent them the virus for their SPECIAL lab in ... wait for it .... Wuhan.
It's a convenient story that it came from soup.
Quite a story.
I never said it came from soup. That is a stupid story that was quickly debunked. But the infection has been traced to the wet market in Wuhan, where thousands of exotic live animals were housed in close proximity. It's viral speed dating in that environment between species that would never interact in the wild. It is unclear what species passed it to humans, but it will all be figured out eventually. But at this point, it seems beyond dispute that it started at that market. The Chinese closed down the market on January 1.

You do realise the virus is in quite a few other countries as well? 15 others so far including the USA, France, Australia etc etc.
Personally I'm getting tired of all the China/Thailand bashing, save it for the bar with other like minded people.
It's happened, lets deal with it instead of the multitude of pointless, nasty, racist comments.
Then again this is TVF - carry on chaps.
You do realize the infection started in an illegal Chinese wet market and that 98% of the infected people are in mainland China?

3 hours ago, lemonjelly said:Noooo, it’s not just the **** flu. Flu fatalities are around 0.1-0.2%.... this new Coronavirus is nearer 3% fatality rate.
The percentage of developing severe symptoms is high too, 25% (?). The Thai health system won’t cope with that many people needing ICU treatment if this virus gets a grip over here. Some people are dividing the number of deaths by the total number of infections and calling the result the "death rate." Then, because the resultant number is low single digits, they think they will live even if they get the infection. Maybe, but that method is dead wrong and it gives the wrong impression about a potentially deadly infection.
Someday when this is all over, it is fair to divide deaths by infections and call it a death rate, but not during the early stages of an epidemic because deaths lag several weeks behind the date they were first infected. For the vast majority of the 2800 people who have been infected, most quite recently, nobody knows yet how many of them will live or die.
The only sensible thing at this point is to look at people in which the infection has completely run its course. The infection runs its course in one of two ways. Either you die, or you recover, meaning the virus is gone. The last numbers I saw from yesterday were sobering: there were 56 deaths and 90 recoveries. That's 38%. For everyone else infected, it is yet to be determined if they will live or die.
The new death numbers came out as being 80 today but I have not seen the updated recovery numbers. But this is something to watch.
The press and some governments are pushing the low death rate numbers -- which are not even correct -- that cause people to lower their guard and say "even if I catch it, I will probably live." That is far from assured. This thing is growing 40% per day. Two more weeks at that rate and we have 275,000. The real death rate figures are somewhere between 3% and 38% and nobody really knows how it will all shake out. But this is certainly not "the flu."

Also the little independent grocery store between Country Road and the Police Station. Like FoodMart, they don't order many copies and are often sold out early. The good thing about the store is that the BP is in a visible rack outside, so no need to get off your motor bike if you don't see it. I buy it several times per week and the Soi 6 location mentioned earlier seems to have the most copies and has the best availability later in the day.
That little news shop between Thepprasit sois 8/10 is also very good. They usually will have the previous day's issue too, for those occasions when I forget to buy the Sunday paper and still want it on Monday.-

The reported figure is probably underreported by at least 2:1. The U.S. has 34 Million smokers and 480,000 smoking-caused deaths.

Google Maps shows Anton's restaurant in Naklua as being "Permanently Closed." Can anyone verify? That would be sad news, although I never cared for the new location. I enjoyed watching the world go by for many years at the old location and was the only german buffet that I know of. Are there others?

Sorry if already posted elsewhere, but a new Tops Market will be coming to the Baan & Beyond complex. It will be quite large, running from Office Mate out to the parking lot. It will be a welcome addition for me. No completion date mentioned.

With respect to the building pointed out by the Op, I lived near there back in 2010-2012 and the scuttlebutt at the time was that it was built by the founder of asianrooms.com back in the 90s. No idea if that was true. They were a pioneer in internet booking of hotels but died a slow death. No idea who owns the property now, but it is well maintained and has ample security.

Kev-in-Thailand has a YT out today that shows a sign at Rompho Market that confirms the land owners as 'Church of Christ in Thailand (The Bangkok Christian Hospital)'.
It also indicated that the lease (to Mr Somsak Srikram) will expire on April 1, 2019.
No clear indication as to what happens next. Could be a new mall / another Big C / hospital or who knows.

Is the pool fixed yet at Tony's 3rd road?
Yes. I think it was under repair most of January and was back in service sometime in February.

Correct.

Baan and Beyond is a "home improvement center" that appears to be very similar to Homeworks, based only on peering through the window. It isn't open yet but the worker bees are in there getting it ready. It opens November 23, with a grand opening November 30, according to the window signs. I agree the name seems like a typically Thai "borrowing" of the gist of another company's name (Bed, Bath, and Beyond). There is one of these in Khon Kaen and perhaps others. http://www.baanandbeyond.com/index.aspx

According to the OP, the Homeworks refurbishment was due to be completed in November. Does anyone know if it is nbow open or if a new opening date has been posted somewhere? Thanks in advance!

Yes, the buffet is still available.
Thanks, good to hear it. By the way, I passed by yesterday at 10:50AM and it was closed, so apparently opening is sometime in the afternoon. I miss watching the world go by at the old location, but I will enjoy the German buffet again shortly.

Anton restarting the buffet is welcome news to me. I was feeling nostalgic walking past the old location today and thought I'd do a quick TV search to see if they changed their mind about the buffet. Since it's been 9 months since the last post, can anyone verify that Anton's is still open and serving the buffet? Thanks!

The Dining Out column periodically answers the question "How do I get my restaurant reviewed?" The answer is simply to contact the Pattaya Mail and ask for a review. The explanation continues that the restaurant knows when the reviewer is coming and how many guests will accompany the reviewer. While the explanation further provides that the reviewer insists that only regular portions be provided, it is only reasonable to assume the owner takes "special care" to make sure there are no screw-ups and its best quality provided, a level of care not offered to most of the rest of us.
These explanatory columns go on to address criticism that they only provide good reviews by stating that is all that people really want: a good restaurant to try. I would disagree, as a bad restaurant review provides a much-appreciated warning of poor service and poor food.
And aside from hobnobbing and frequently doing reviews of its advertising restaurants, the impact of the draconian defamation laws shouldn't be casually swept aside. Even if found innocent, it will cost a considerable amount of time and money to defend oneself, something a small newspaper cannot afford to endure. I wish it were otherwise.

Unusual weather indeed here in Pattaya for early April.

The place went out of business a long time ago. I walked past it recently and it was very run down. I would guess abandoned for at least a year and a half.
Thai Visa is full of people who feel a compulsion to comment in every thread even though they have absoutely nothing to contribute.

I haven't heard anything about a Tony closing other than this thread. I used the Pattaya Third Road gym last night, and I just took a swing by (7PM Wednesday night) the Jomtien gym and it is open and operating normally.

Early news reports (January) indicated that Tony's wife told police about an ongoing dispute with a former business partner named Toby.
Thailand to screen arrivals from China as tally of virus infections hits 14

From reports I have read, there is a lengthy bureaucratic process involved to be tested. First, there has to be an available bed for you, otherwise you are turned away. And then there is bureaucratic approval and a lengthy process to obtain results.
On earlier comments about the death rate, it needs to be remembered that it seems to take about 3 weeks from onset of the infection until death. So people dying today got infected around January 8, when there were only a few hundred cases worldwide. Three weeks from now we will learn if all these recently infected people will live or die.
For those in which the infection has run its course, the numbers are sobering.
