  1. Well put, Veazer. I'm with you on this one. Call them 'netbooks", 'notebooks' or 'ultraportable' isn't a substantive matter, just semantics.

BTW, where did you bought your Acer 1810T? How much is it? Does it comes with OS?

P.S. I've noticed that it supports up to 4GB of RAM. - (OP raised the RAM issue.)

it was purchased in Chiang Mai at Panthip, an Acer dealer on the first floor. It came with Vista but i believe there's a Win7 upgrade option, i went with XP. I believe the coworker paid around 24K for it, not positive.

And yes, it does support 4GB memory. Also the processor is 64 bit, so 64-bit OSes are a nice option.

  2. The question is if you could call this a netbook?

If your definition of netbook is only the monitor size, then maybe yes. But a Core2Duo processor will never be a netbook (at least in my head), it defeats the whole point of netbooks, it's just a small notebook.

Most brands now makes notebooks with 11.6" monitors, but they don't label them as netbooks.

I think trying to find a distinct line between what is a netbook and what is a notebook will be difficult at best and ultimately doesn't gain anything. The real question is are you happy with the size and specs of your purchase?

further, i think deciding that something can't be a netbook because it has a decent processor doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. I really don't get your statement that having a CULV duo "will never be a netbook (at least in my head), it defeats the whole point of netbooks". How? They've been matched with a far more efficient chipset and the runtimes are far better than the average Atom netbook. What is lost? Where's the defeat?

If forced, i'd be more likely to categorize 'netbooks' based on price and weight/size. As i said, the 1810T is just a little heavier than my 1000H, but has a far better battery life and specs. The price is a little higher, but still much less than a pricey "subnotebook" with higher specs and a much higher pricetag. It's an excellent compromise between the bog standard 1.6GHz atom / 160GB drive / 1024x600 netbooks that everyone is cranking out and a real laptop. It's one of the first machines to fill the niche between while still letting the price lean towards the netbook camp. I'm not a complete fan of Acer, but i'll give them some credit for what they've manage to put together.

  3. I just picked up a Acer 1810T for a friend, massive improvement over my Asus 1000H

1366x768 screen res vs 1024x600 for most netbooks.

11.6" screen but still roughly the same weight.

    320GB drive

Core2 Solo CULV processor instead of Intel Atom, huge improvement.

    Nice keyboard

    Gigabit LAN

    HDMI out

Downsides are a glossy screen, which i don't mind but many people despise.

There's a dual core version in the states, not sure if it has made it to thailand yet. Definitely worth a look.

OTOH, acer online support has been a massive headache, i don't know how well the local support is. Good luck in your search!

  4. My maxnet biz connection has been absolutely <deleted> for international links lately, so i sent them a support request. when i tried responding to the request, it bounced back and the blocked IP is their own.

    Nice work, guys.

  5. Kaspersky virtual keyboard comes with their anti-virus and is specifically designed to avoid key loggers and very simple to use - activate with icon in Firefox next to search window.

Virtual keyboards are pretty worthless, many of the keyloggers take a low quality jpg with each mouse click. Then it's just a matter of scanning the screen caps for OSKs and watching what was clicked.

  6. www.alexa.com/siteinfo/mict.go.th

    Rising sun!

The 4%+ visitors from Laos is a bit odd too...

A thai friend suggested I browse a certain highly respected royal person's web site continuously until the block occurred, take a screenshot and bring a printout in asking them to explain this deeply offense mistake. Might be the only thing that gets them moving.

  7. internet browsing is getting slower and slower everyday because of this...

i really need to use my vpn to get it faster? or i could look into a proxy?

both of those solutions tend to slow connections, though i have seen some pages that load faster when i'm using my vpn connection. The real problem here is poorly managed internet,

  8. `Sorry, the website you are accessing has been closed by Royal Thai Police due to inappropriateness such as pornography, gambling or contain any information which is deemed to violate national security.`

Ten minutes ago my screen went blank while accessing this website & the above message appeared.

Does someone in authority think this website contains information which is deemed to violate national security?

  9. Has anyone experiencing this problem also noticed lately that pages sometimes load but are totally unformatted and just a long vertical column? I think it's the same random blocking occasionally blocking the .css files for a site.

This company is such a joke. I just got another random charge on my bill - 300 baht for "rental fee". They were totally unable to explain what it was for and just said it was for "old service", whatever that means. I asked what exactly was being rented and why this was on my bill 7 months after using their service but she couldn't explain because the computers were down, the identical excuse given the previous month when i when to inquire about a billing problem.

  10. anybody know the username and password to get into these routers and if so has someone tried to portforward on it. the ip for the router is 192.168.1.1

    admin / TTT

I would put the modem in bridge mode and do all the forwarding on the router. Much easier than trying to manage two devices.

  11. I've noticed a few times lately when i check the router that Maxnet's DHCP server has given me a non-routable/private IP. If this is the direction they are heading, i think could really hurt VoIP, torrents, home servers, gaming, anything else requiring a public IP. Anyone else seen this or know what's going on?

As if this company needed to find another way to frustrate their customers.

  12. Well that should make every web developer on the planet hate microsoft even more. However, some of the big social networking and ecommerce sites have been talking about scrapping IE6 support.

People using IE6 will change when they discover important parts of the internet no longer work for them.

This has saved me a whole lot of agony for designing IE5.5/IE6 sites: http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/ Far easier and functional than other solutions.

I agree though, it's time to scrap IE6. I think some of the major reasons corp users are still on IE6 are problems & issues are problems caused by microsoft. OWA (Outlook Web Access) is a prime example of that. IE7 and Vista users get to watch their browser crash if using the enhanced mode of OWA. So how did MS patch it? By making it an Exchange server patch only! :) It requires the admin to patch the server so that the server starts offering the newer control plugin, but this only helps users who first accessed after the server was patched or digs through the control settings and forces the plugin the be re-installed. The office i work for in NY refuses to apply the patch because they plan to migrate to a newer version of Exchange in the future and don't want to mess with the servers. I downloaded the server patch myself and extracted the IE update and now it works fine. Why doesn't MS just let end users update their browser instead of this absurd path of forcing the patch to be distributed from the server?

The poor performance of IE7 didn't help things either.

  13. Hi Just to clarify in the vast majority of countries you can use any Voip provider you wish. In Thailand there is Voip but only certain licenced companies all of whom exept from True and Loxinfo are either CATor TOT or subsidiaries of them.which are officially allowed to supply it and they are not allowed to give you a Thai DID but only to provide a means of point to pont Voip within Thailand.

We applied for a licence to market both Voip and broadband via satellite 3 years ago whenever we follow up the answer is always the same it is under consideation to allow NGO's to provide these services when you ask how long this might take ? oh not possible to give an answer on that..

We offer services at less than 2 euro cents a minute to Europe, USA, Canada & Russia and I think this is the main problem in that we would be at worst only 20% of the cost of any currently available service.

Thanks for the clarification, I wondered if it came down to DID because that's exactly what the big providers are NOT offering.

If your considering the use of these services for NGOs, i would keep security in mind. SIP is very easy traffic to monitor if security certs are not used, and they rarely seem to be.

2 euro cents is a good price but it's not 20% of any currently available service, at least for US calling. Mouthmun's rates to the US are 45 satong per minute, or a little less then 1 euro cents per minute.

Any idea what the laws are for using your own line as a personal DID on your own equipment (not reselling) ?

    edit: typo

  14. why does google translate convert baht to dollars without actually convert the amount itself? It should be left as baht imho..

    Just a guess

it may have something to do with the computer country settings. Mine are set to US

fair enough, but my point is that the word 'baht' does not translate to the word 'dollar', so why do they translate it this way? It should simply replace 'บาท' with 'baht' or '฿'. if they wish to try to guess your country and convert currencies, they'll need to adjust the value as well and not only the unit of currency.

  15. Strictly speaking Voip is illegal in Thailand although many people use it ...

I hear this stated a lot, but if this is the case how can major companies like MaxNet openly offer voip service and voip equipment in their sales offices? Actually most of the internet providers offer VOIP service of some kind. True has TrueNetTalk, LoxInfo has CS Voice, TOT has TOTNetCall, CAT has Cat2Call. There's a fair amount of providers out there, and Voipthailand.com and others openly sell equipment.

I wonder if it is an old law that has been changed or a misinterpretation of current law, etc.

  16. The newer netbooks on the horizon will address some of the shortcomings of the current crop, namely poor video performance. The Lenovo S12, Samsung N510 and Mobii ION will all feature the nVidia 9400M video card. This means full 1080p HD playback and smooth playback of flash video and HD flash video at sites like youtube, vimeo, etc (with Flash player v10+). It also means faster encoding for CUDA supported apps.

I'm holding out for the S12. It's larger than my current 10" asus but the higher res screen and better video card will be worth it.
