I think 45 mins. is a bit short. I live Bang Saray. Takes me 35-40 mins. to Jomtien. on my motorbike, longer by car as can't nip in and out between the cars (I'm not Thai). Driving in the opposite direction towards U-Tapow it takes me about the same length of time to reach the airport (I'm usually going to the beautiful Nang Ram beach).

I use the google maps recomended route, and live in Jomtien, maybe a little longer if you are further into Pattaya depending on the time of day. Hope that helps.

    cheers

There'e mini bus from Utapao to Pattaya 200-250b one way  no need for taxi provided your flight is in the morning or mid afternoon

Thanks for the response. Yes, I agree that a degree is important. I'm just trying to assess if the college degrees that I have can be considered as university-level education, and if not, if there are other ways or places (legal) where I can teach of which a university or bachelor's degree isn't a requirement.

Nope, there's no other way you may as well try China or Vietnam. You could go to smaller town or cities that may give you WP. Fluency in Thai won't get you far in school like other poster said, it's advantage for everyday communication with the locals.

I think it is a Rat....

What makes you think its a rat?? rat does not spin the wheel and throw the bucket like being pissed off!!

  4. All they have to do is, make it a mandatory to speak ENGLISH in school, no if or but about it, that's the only way they can learn english spending 7 hours a day for the next 12 years. I came from a non native speaking country, but we spoke only English in class as well as outside the english classroom plus we had to study 3 other languages which were native. But then learn English language for what?? Thai language dee mak mak!!

I wasnt teaching there, was visiting my soon to be ex husbands family, I speak a bit of thai yes, but I find the southern accent very hard to work out sometimes! no one spoke English at all, was an interesting place...I was quite the novelty..

Yes, indeed the southern dialect is so different, I stayed for a week the apartment rentals were not cheap almost as pricey as bkk, that place is good if you have someone otherwise you on your own with no communication at all. I'm asian so i blend in more easily and my thai's are pretty good so no problem there buying food. May I ask are you Thai or Caucasian?

The town I was actually in was Thung Song.... I went to the public school there, as my ex's dad used to sell fruit at lunch.  A group of students had juts come out of an english lesson, and the dad said to them to practise their english, they could only manage a hello, and how you? Nothing else.

OMG!! are you still teaching there? Luckily I could speak decent Thai otherwise you on your own, none spoke english even at that Sunee plaza.

When i was staying in Nakhon Si Thammarat I was shocked by the education system and lack of resources,  my ex's friends little boy was doing his homework on some sheets of paper, because they had no money for books. I gave him and english/thai dictionary and it was the first book the family owned.  The whole education system needs to be overhauled.  Not just English teaching.

Me too, I was in Thung Song, the freaking school director didn't speak a word of English and tried to make me teach 3 straight classes without a break, grade 6 had no books or any clue of daily english vocabulary. I stayed 1 day and walked out. It's supposed to be a private school ripping off the family. I pity them all!!

There is a huge, untapped, resource of ex-pat talent that the authorities here refuse to use. I am retired, have qualifications in teaching English to speakers of other languages, (ESOL), yet I can't do any work here to help people learn English !
I would willingly give up a few hours a day, for a reasonable rate of pay, (and it would be nice if this made the visa process easier), but they don't want to know.

Yes, but you wasting your time as they think they can do better.

A mate in Ubon would love to teach some hours a week, but schools are not interested in getting him a work permit.

He's from London and would be an asset to most schools.

But they are ignorant and blind.

yes, I'm Asian Canadian they say I'm not a native speakers, I've been in Canada almost 30 years and was speaking english way before I migrated.  I told them well, your teacher can't even compose a sentence and everyday common vocab, so don't tell me I'm not good enough.

  10. Yes it can, but there are few things Thailand needs to do to attract the tourist back.

    1. Be courteous, learn some customer service, learn to speak basic English.

    2. Stop the nonsense allowing tourist only for 90 days per year on arrival visa.

    3. Grant 90 days on arrival visa without getting any visa application from the Embassy or home country

    4. Allow extension of another 90 days within the country without leaving and doing stupid visa run.

    5. Visa fees for countries that require visa be dropped to 1000B and given 3 month max stay.

    6. Stop the scam all over Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai.

Then, only maybe people will give it a thought, otherwise Thailand has nothing to offer other than an expensive brothel, scammers and racism against all foreigners. All they want is go to Thailand and unload $10,000 in 2 weeks and leave!
