  1. Excuse me for being thick, but which official bit of paper displays the "voting rights" for a Thai limited company? As far as my "company papers" seem to show, I only own 49% of the shares of "my" limited company, and therefore I only have 49% of the voting rights. And my "protection" is the set of proxy papers in my safe that have been pre-signed by the other 6 (Thai) shareholders. Confused.
That is one way to do a company set-up. Another way is to issue two classes of shares with specified voting rights. Then the minority owner can control the company via his class of shares. This is perceived to be safer since the other set-up can be undone if all of the other shareholders have a meeting and decide to make changes to the company (ie, issue new shares, change directors, etc). The proxy concept implies that you trust the other shareholders not to put a scheme into play to unwind your position in the company.
  2. Was just over to immigration in Pattaya for the yearly marriage visa. This year I was convinced I could actually go through the entire process without being sent running over to the only-photo-copy-store-next-to-immigration to make a bunch of last minute copies. Wrong! Going in before hand doesn't seem to accomplish too much as there isn't a list that I could find and if you ask what you need they tell you a couple of things but not the entire list.

Anyway, here is what I found was needed.

a.) Marriage Certificate. Bring original and two color copies.

b.) Hand written map to your house. Original and one copy.

c.) Passport with copies of every single page including departure cards or any other folded documents in your passport. You need 2 complete copies and every page must be signed.

d.) Birth certificate of any children with Thai wife. 2 copies + original.

e.) Letter from bank verifying balance in passbook (800k +). The original letter is needed + 1 copy. Note; the alternative is a letter from the embassy showing income of 40k per month (I think).

f.) TM7 Application form. You need to complete 2 application forms, including the part about why you are applying for the visa. Both forms need to be handwritten (no copies).

g.)Bank Book. Original + copies (2 sets). Every page must be photo copied, not just the first and last page.

h.) Color Pictures of Self. 2 color pictures of yourself 4cm x 6cm. These they don't seem to be too particular about, I did them myself and printed on my color printer, seemed to work out fine. I know in other countries they have requirements for how big your head should be in the picture, etc, here the only thing is getting the size of 4x6 right.

i.) Wife's ID card. Front and back. 2 copies signed by wife.

j.) Pictures of family. This isn't as important as before, just one maybe of Thai wedding cerimony or old pic showing 2 of you together and 1 recent. Take in the original photos and make a 2 photo copies of the 2 you are most likely to use.

k.) Wife's family book. 2 copies of front page.

l.) Wife. An obvious one but just a note. There is a formal interview to check everything out at the end and you both need to be there. If wifey is upcountry, no dice!

I'd love to hear about anyone successfully going through the process that prepares everything ahead of time and doesn't get sent out to make last minute copies!

  3. hurray! They fixed the problem, called me today and it has been working normally for the last two days. The front line support at ipStar is pretty good, it just seems that simple things take a long time to get fixed. This problem took approximately a month to resolve! If only ADSL was an option.

  4. The saga continues. This update is more a compentary on ipStar service, which, unfortunately isn't the best.

Currently the www.fxcm.com website is unreachable via ipStar from about 7 PM to 8 AM and also on the weekends. Is is availabe using any other connection method other than ipStar.

The good part is that the service techs that answer the phones are fairly helpful. About 2 weeks ago the staff called his friend who was using ADSL to confirm that his friend could access the site --> proving it was a problem with ipStar. They agree it is their problem and they are trying to solve it.

When I talk to them, every time it has been referred to Engineering, a tech is looking at it and they will have him call me. That is as far as it ever goes. The people that answer the phones can't do anything to solve the problem and it appears that the engineers that are looking into the problem don't ever do anything.

I would figure that this problem would be easy to solve since it occurs on a regular basis, they should be able to troubleshoot it. I'm still betting that they can fix it, but am starting to realize that maybe they just won't ever get arount to it. It has been almost a month now.

  5. The access has been there all weekend (ie. working normally). Now Monday evening I cannot access it again. I tried the direct ip address, 209.200.153.17 and the same thing happens -- so I guess the DNS part was bs. I'm still working with the techs. Proxy access still works fine.

  6. I have ipStar satellite internet and have been using it for quite some time. Here is the current problem --

There is one particular web site that I need to be able to access - www.fxcm.com . Starting about 3 weeks ago periodically the site is unreachable for hours at a time. During this time when it is unreachable via ipStar you can access it fine using a proxy or any other isp within Thailand. I first was suspicious that the site was somehow mistakenly being 'blocked' therefore the proxy access would work but direct access would not. However, not the case, when inaccessable via ipStar it is always accessable via any other isp, checked several times with buddies. (Cannot simply use the proxy access to get around the problem since there is other auxilary software which needs to access the site).

ipStar acknowledges the problem and have been working on it for about 10 days. The first time I called they said the problem had already been reported to them and had something to do with the inability to resolve a DNS name.

When I call ipStar the say the problem has been referred to a Tech in the Network department who I have yet never talked to. The other frustrating thing about the problem is sometimes the site is able to be accessed fine for several hours at a time, so just by me accessing the site I don't know if they have fixed the problem or not. As of this morning the site is not accessable.

Here is the real question: My knowledge of the internet is fairly basic, I'm trying to visualize exactly what kind of setup would make a certain site unavailable for one specific isp and not others. Any explanation, insight, or conjecture would be appreciated. In the end I'm hoping to talk to one of the ipStar techs and find out what they actually did to fix the problem.

  7. There is an outfit that adversites and has an sales office on the 3rd floor of Duk Com in South Pattaya, Sun-Channnels. They are about 1/3 the cost of the competition (to install a 300 channel movable satellite system) as far as I can tell and am wondering from anyone who has dealt with them how the equipment, service and reception is.....

  8. With regards to a Thai Limited Company I know that a tax card is issued in the name of the comapny which has a number to be used with tax returns etc. If any director of the company is a foreigner, does that foreigner also need to have a personal tax id card/number to be used if/when company dividends or other profits arise from the company? Or can he/she just wait until personal income liability actually arises?

  9. As a parent of one of the students at the Montessori school, I've known Ron since he took on the job as principle there. Although we didn't know each other socially, we had a lot of interaction in the PTA and various other school activities. As far as his job, I would say he was really good. He did a lot of good things for the school, by that I mean programs such as the PTA and organized and ran events well. He also was a good person to run any problems by with my child and seemed to take and interest in all the children at the school.

I also knew the previous principle who I didn't find to be nearly as good in that position.

I heard of the events leading up to the dismissal by another teacher, didn't need to get the full details, but basically thought that it didn't sound all that serious to merit a dismissal. Anyway, again, I didn't get into detail but as far as him being principle the infraction sounded minor. It definitely didn't involve showing inappropriate materials to students as others here seem to have reported. Nothing in my interaction with him ever gave me cause to suspect that he shouldn't be in that position and nothing I've heard to date does either.

I felt from knowing Mr. Ron he would take the firing badly and also knew his money situation wasn't the best.

I'll remember Mr. Ron as a really good principle and friend who I would say brought a lot to the school.
