  1. Yes. You need to show both passports when you re-enter and make sure the IO uses the "visa".

    • If by " retirement visa" you mean you have a 1 year permit to stay based on retirement you should go to immigration once you're back in the country and have it transferred to the new passport.
    • If you are referring to a multiple entry Non-Immigrant visa then that will stay in the old passport and you need to use both passports until the visa expires.
Thanks Elviajero for the info.yes I have the multiple entry NI visa sp will keep both .

  2. Hi, I am currently subscribed to True Vision with Sentanta sports channel, up until last year Sentanta had Australian NRL every week and state of origin series. Now, apparently, fox sports now has exclusive rights to the NRL. My question is, I am looking at changing to an AIS  package which has Fox sports 1, 2 and 3 channels, does any body who has AIS service noticed whether these sports channels have Ozzie NRL? Thanks.

The only way you will get Nrl is by subscribing to Nrl for $189 via livestream or via an Android box from Skysports Uk , but that is only 3 games per round.
You can get Foxtel Australia through Foxtel Go but only with the right brand of Android Box and someone in Oz is prepared to let you use their Foxtel ID.

  3. A three and a half year old speaking three languages? At that age a normal kid would still have some difficulty speaking one language, but what do I know? I have never had kids.

Personally I could never raise another man's child, especially in Thailand.I've been asked but refused. I've been here for most my life and seen too many horror stories, especially with farang marrying women with make children. No bloody chance.
I understand the OP, it's wonderful the first few years, but remember they get older.

Why not , in my case the kid just turned 4 today and speaks Thai fluently and can speak and understand English , albeit not as proficiently as his own mother tongue.

  4. Thank you ubonjoe. I didn't realize the visa on arrival is only 15 days. I had thought it was also a 30 day visa, like the 30 day visa exempt entry. But after rereading a couple of sites more closely (below) I see that it is in fact only a 15 day visa:

    http://www.suvarnabhumiairport.com/en/907-suvarnabhumi-visa-on-arrival

    https://www.thaiembassy.sg/visa-matters-/-consular/visa-on-arrival

Anyway, you have answered my more important question that a 30 day visa exempt entry can be changed to 90 day non-immigrant category O visa. Thank you.

Yes that was how I got my initial retirement visa , 30 day visa exempt on arroval , then a 90 day visa followed by a retirement one.

  5. Once you actually live here and settle into the groove, doing yearly in country Extensions, time can pass by easily.
My last trip back to OZ was after 4years & 9 months absence.

Yes Mate, and the good thing about here in Sakeo , the last 3 times I've been the office , I was the only client there. My extension in January took no more than 20 minutes.

  6. Yes it's the TM 30 , I've been advised by a mate that I have to report today and again when I come back from Cambodia.
I have to get my GF to register online, otherwise too much back and forth to immigration, even when I visit locally to Pattaya etc .
Will check up with Sakeo Immigration whether the 90 days and TM 30 reporting are linked on same website.

  7. You have to dig deeply inside Medicare rules but basically if you are outside of Australia for more than five years, without returning, then to reclaim your suspended Medicare rights (which are automatically suspended every time you exit through international Border Control) you have to convince them you are now a permanent resident of Australia by their rules..
Evidence they may require includes that you have sold all overseas possessions, rescinded all leases, and established leases, motor cars etc in Australia.

There is no common definition of what determines residency between the ATO, Medicare or Centrelink - don't fall into the trap that if you satisfy one you have satisfied all of them.

So, schedule a return to OZ trip at least once every five years.

Thanks mate, there is no way I'd stay away from Oz for 5 years , I will be returning at least twice a year so that's fine.

  8. It is reduced by about 10% (those add-on benefits are not paid when overseas). But that is because I worked and lived in Australia for over 35 years. If someone did it for say 30 years, then it is further reduced. The minimum period for 'portability' overseas is 10 years. Tell you mate not to go back exactly 2 years before, go back more than that maybe 3-6 mths more. The reason is that they are looking very 'hard' at anyone who comes back exactly 2 years beforehand, and it looks like they will go back as soon as they get approved.  Close all Thai bank accounts, cancel licence etc etc etc. He needs to make it look like he has come back permanently. He needs to have nothing (they know about) to go back to in Thailand, and have set himself up in Aust as permanent - had some fun overseas now staying here - NNWW. He needs to do all the usual re home and banks and voting roll etc etc - but also join clubs and maybe do a part--time job and maybe volunteer work and maybe coach footy  or cricket - build some 'roots' like you are staying. Come back exactly 24 mths, and sit in a room while waiting, and they will delay portability - it is not automatic.

Did you work for an Australian company and pay Aust taxes? Were you there all those years, or did you regularly visit Aust and had a home there?  You maybe have some time 'credit' if you did. Dont give up on that so easily. You can ask and get a ruling - and appeal.

I had my own business and in Oz I have a TFN and paid tax on my rentals and I also have a home there , anyway will check them out and I will show my mate the advice you just gave when I catch up with him this arvo to watch the footy.
