When you get to the border you will find a few border-run groups accompanied by visa agents.

One of the agents will offer to include you with their group if you approach them. You stay Thaiside while the courier does the paperwork and takes the groups passports, and yours, across the border and sorts it all.

They will be on the lookout and probably approach you anyway.

About 1200baht all in as I recall, no need to stay or pay the 300baht sameday in/out.

But it might be enjoyable to visit the local shops in Phsa Prum.

So enjoyable that "You'll never leave!".

local shops in Phsa Prum ?

    There is absolutely nothing there.

Actually he is right. I just got my one year Lao visa and work permit for $600 in Laos - the whole thing took a few weeks and all it took was some passport photos and some documents with passport. You have to leave the country and cross by land border back into the country when you present the document and you get the special visa in your passport. You have to wait up to 2 weeks without leaving the country to get the two books (stay book and work permit).

There are several companies who do this.

Enjoy it until you are caught. Sorry about it, you just lost $600.

Using one of these visa companies to procure a Lao one year B2 business visa + work/stay permit booklet is NOT legal in Laos - unless you are properly employed by this visa company. The blue work permit and yellow stay permit booklets record your employer's name, your place of work and your job position. In all cases these are phony positions, often in totally different provinces to where you actually live.

If Lao immigration catches you out, you will be arrested and held until a big USD fine is paid - and then blacklisted and deported.

This is what I heard before, but are we sure that the fine is so high ? Why are they more greedy than in Cambodia ?

In the past I liked Laos but now think that it's a useless country where someone must be brainless to go live and face all te hassle,

Thailand makes it difficult to live for the poor but at least it's the best place in the world where to live.

I would not overstay in Laos... The Police is not a problem, but Immigration, when leaving, is a Huge problem...

You can always get a 1-year business visa, with a work-permit - there are a lot of companies offering this service - all legal - except you don't really work, anywhere... Cost is from $ 400 - $600.- per year.

You can not get an MRTV, unless you have a Lao 1-year visa and workpermit + can show THB 200,000 in a bank account (can be Lao, Thai etc.)

Wrong, not as easy as you say to get a 1 year visa in Laos.

my wife opened a small shop selling womens clothes. I always looked at these small shops selling shirts or whatever and would think how can they make any money. When my wife said she wanted to open a shop I told her that i don't think she would make any money, but she surprised me and does well. She nets about 25-30K on an average month, and on a good month she will net somewhere between 40-50K.

It seems more than impossible to make so much, except if she also make the clothes herself !

Oh and maple sirup (real one) of course.

A few friends with restaurants targeting both expats / white collar thais in central Bangkok are willing to pay up to THB 25,000 - 30,000 for Thai staff that can effectively communicate in English (not fluent mind you, but enough to make life easy for non-Thai speaking clientele).

You friends are liars. It's clearly impossible.

Most of the ladies in our village l know who are waitresses or cooks, working for someone who owns or rents a restaurant are on 300 a day and hope for a good tip share.

They mostly work in two's or three's depending on the time of year.

My wife's cafe' she rents is among many others and some days she may only take a 100 baht a day and some days it can be 3000 baht swing and roundabouts.

In busy cities l would be sure it's a different situation.

Yes I guess that 300 thb / day is the minimum anywhere in Thailand at any restaurant but many people do a lot more than 10000 thb/month
