Reading all this I realize how fortunate I am.

I do live in Bangkok and normally work abroad. Currently living on reduced salary due to not being able to travel. At least I am with my family, safe and sound.

My hope is that soon the country (and the world) will open again, eventually it has to.

Everybody, stay strong and never give up hoping for the best. Kudos to TV for raising awareness!

I'm married and trying to divorce but not easy thanks to immigration laws. And due to lack of knowledge of Thai laws didn't realize my new Thai gf could have serious problems made for her by my wife even though divorce was agreed upon. And my gf left me out of fear. I'm fighting to get divorced as fast as possible and to get her back. As she is damn near the perfect ideal life partner in my eyes. Again only reason she left me us fear of my wife under Thai laws. Not because of problems between us. We were beyond happy together. Point of my reply is that I'm happy for you that you are safe with your family while I'm fighting to get mine back. Being my gf that left me. Which I probably will after get my divorce but still a chance I won't. As took her long time to admit the truth to me and herself as to why she left me and started trying to find new. But after accepting the reality of everything wants us back together but also stuck as has other guys been talking to with intent to try to be with one of them. Which I understand her side as well.

  2. I just have to wander by her pic with her plate if possibly she just had enough of the motorbikes cutting off and all their stupid <deleted> they do. And this time just said f it and didn't even try to avoid hitting the motorbike. And smile is simply saying drive stupid and cut off a car this is what happens. No remorse for someone who didn't care for my life. They got what they deserved. I am not advocating for her but only a possibility

Not in any of the scores of Thai hotels I have stayed in.  Not once been asked for corkage in 40 years.

Same when I go to ihop I get a drink from the supermarket. As their drink prices are way to high. It's like 60 baht or so per drink no refill or anything. Why would I want to pay 120-200 baht for drink at ihop when I can go to the supermarket and get more then enough drink for under 40. Just don't make sense. Sometimes restaurants can only blame themselves by charging way too much for drinks. No I don't expect a drink at a restaurant to be as cheap as 7eleven but at the same time if you are charging like the same price for 4l per drink on soda and so on that's way too much and unresonanable.

If I was the Economics or Finance Minister of Thailand I would have trouble sleeping at night.

In my mind would be graphs of the rise in debt---corporate and household---over the last ten years, bank exposure, and the likelihood that asset prices (otherwise known as collateral for all those bank loans) are under pressure.

In Bangkok one can see billboards advertising 50% price cuts on under-construction condos by major developers. Not good. Real estate prices are set on the margin, which means prices are set by the weakest hands, which is to say those with the most leverage. Those with less leverage (if these aren't unicorns) are still going to feel it, because real estate is a wasting asset. Even if one is debt free, there are still property taxes and maintenance costs, so a building with no tenant or one in arrears still has a cash outflow.

Leveraged owners with no tenants (businesses gone bust) will be turning the keys over to banks, and banks are not going to want to own a huge portfolio of real estate. They will want to sell it.

The govt had introduced debt amnesty, but that has expired. The debt didn't go away, of course, but borrowers were allowed to skip payments and banks did not have to account for the lack of incoming debt servicing. Yesterday an official said it might be time to put this debt moratorium back on, which is to say, "Let's kick the can down the road again, because there is no other way to deal with it".

I have seen some commentary that 'this isn't as bad as 1997'. I question that, as it is not only an entirely different problem, it is also worldwide, not just regional like 1997. Yes, there are likely to be bargains galore in property, but timing will be critical. Buying something down 50% looks good until its price is down 75%.

Thailand does have a decent pile of foreign reserves. I suspect it is going to have to go to that well, and soon, if it insists on maintaining the same level of vigilance against the virus by keeping the borders closed. Absent some return to normalcy, the banking system's capital cushion is going to be under pressure in the next few months as more businesses fail and leveraged borrowers---even homeowners who put zero down on that new car---feel the pain of economic decline. Banks are increasingly likely to need some sort of bailout. Accounting rules can be changed, by mathematics is the Sword of Damocles that cannot be denied.

This article is about Pattaya, because the pain hits it first and hardest owing to its dependence on foreign tourism. The wider Thai economy is hardly any more immune to Covid-driven decline. Some truly difficult decisions are coming.

I am not rich but I'd be all for some changes like allowing foriengers to borrow without needing to have work permit as I'd buy a condo at this time. Hell with being here for atleast another 5 years feels like far better then renting as at least my money is going towards something worthwhile and not being wasted. I'd also stretch a bit more and get a big bike as well as bkk traffic is beyond a nightmare now for a car and when weather is good I want to be on a big bike for the traffic. If course have to make budget cuts somewhere to take on the extra debt at that point but would be worth it's while in the long run. Well 1 the condo payments would be more like switching from rent to payments. Then the bike would be extra to adjust for.

All of you are wrong for every aspects.

First of all the English is mandatory as a second language starting at certain age, and it is impossible to have native English speaking teachers at every school. Some one has to teach English for class at all schools country-wide and the only way is having local teachers whose major is English as specialty in education.

And to communicate efficiently with anyone whose native language is not English, someone who speaks local language will have advantage to teach any subjects including English.

The language is acquires as soon as we are born, and it is not learned through class. Native language is learned by facial expression, posture, motion, sounds, etc. by mother and families surrounding babies. Once any human being is isolated after birth and pass a certain age, it is impossible to learn any language because the brain function loses the ability to acquire the language. The native tongue is not learned by studying the grammar.

But the second language is completely different from learning the native language.

It is similar to metaphysical process of thinking. We learn the second language by logical process of brain. So one must learn the alphabet first and then the grammar. The speech is the last. It is completely opposite to learning native language.

So the not-so-perfect accent teacher is not a significant problem.

And the action and movement of our mussel of our body is formed immediately after birth which will determine certain way of making our sound as involuntary brain function. So the accent or making a certain sound by different ethnic people are unique and it will stay in certain way for life time. There is no way you can acquire the perfect accent in second language even your spouse is a native speaker of your second language and have lived together for 99 years.

Last, different ethnic people has different physical structure which results in distinct characteristics by ethnicities. You can tell whether someone is African or not no matter what language they speak by the distinct way making sound. Even an Asian who is born and raised America and speak only English, anyone can tell he or she is an Asian by sound. The lung capacity is different and the resonance of the nasal sound of Asian body is not same as Caucasian or African.

So the perfection of speech by the second language teachers shouldn't be a priority for qualification.

English is my second language and I still get laugh by others for my wrong grammar and funny accent.

But I manage to live without that much difficulty and don't even try to imitate perfect English.

As long as I am able to communicate, that is all matter I am concerned about. Not so perfect, so what.

Wow you clearly have never heard adam bradsaw speak thai. He has a perfect thsi accent amd speals far better thai then most thais even do. I know so many thais that envy him do to his thai speaking ability.

How can this be difficult? My GF spends the same time in any shop as I do. That's because she knows if I have left and she is still there, she will have to pay for whatever she buys.

I can send you a training manual for a modest fee.

Thats what i started doing. Telling her im leaving and if you dont come too you have to find a way to pay for your things. Or if somewhere else and take car. Inform her that if not back to car by the time i get there you will need to find your own way home. There is a point beyond understanding. We have been there many times sounds like and forced to take such options.

Why the downer on Thai people

Relax, you pay your way in Thailand, you adhere to the requests for information, you remain dignified, polite and understanding and 99% of the time life is ok

Alternatively, try insisting you have 'rights' be aggressive, moan and complain about Thai skills and attitude, voice opinions about how bad the system is you are set for a disappointing time

Thai people are concerned about the virus, they would probably really prefer these farang tourists had gone home rather than take the selfish gamble of being stranded and risk the health of the Thai IOs by cramming into an already crowded office

But then selfish the 'tourists' have been, and, selfish they continue to remain, my sympathy lies with the Thai office workers who have to face this kind of person in this kind of environment clearly tourists who do not give a damn about social distancing or the welfare of others

I try to not comment much anymire as a resault that afterwards i never look again. But you have earned a reply from me. Even though im on a non o visa i feel your hate directed at me still. First off im not rich so <deleted> you. Secondly i have no home or anything back in america. It was all sold from under me by my uncle who pocketed all the money. And the trusties have no idea how i could return to america as they cant give me a place to stay or anything like that. Again <deleted> you. Yes my credit is <deleted> in america do to some previous poor choices so cant do anything really on my own there. <deleted> you again. If you dont like my message then do us all a <deleted> favour and <deleted> off yourself. I dont have a college degree yet but im sure as hell am fare more itellegent then you. With all thats going on and you feel the need to spout such hate and disrespect. If i get banned from here for my reply then so be it. But it has to be said. People like you have to be checked and put in your place. And with huge levels of hate and disrespect. You dont deserve respect or care. Thus you wont get it from me. Not to mention its people like you that helps to <deleted> <deleted> up for everyone else. Encouraging stupid and sometimes impossible demands out of people to be met. Again i aint <deleted> rich. 4000 to do a <deleted> 30 day extension. If i could even get in to see my embassy to get a letter from them. Which soon im sure that wont be possible even. And no i dont see borders opening up again before my visa expires. One last thing if you read this and chose to reply have fun cause i will never see it. Waste your time help yourself. So people can continue to see how <deleted> stupid and worthless you are. As i will not return to this article nor check my notifications. So will never even know if reply or not. And if anyone even tried to get beyond that theyd be shot instantly. I kmow be shot as when i tried to approach just to enter the bank 3 raised their guns amd said im mandarin something i i understood they meant i need to back up and wait till there done then can enter the bank. So i did.

Don't jumpt to conclusions it is entirely possible poor thais avoid the checkpoints because they may not have money for a helmet or they simply may not have a helmet and 500 baht is a lot of money to many of them.  How long have you lived here?

If they cant afford a helmet for 250 how can they afford a motorbike. Even at 500 thats nothing compared to the cost of a cheap second hand. So if can afford a motorbike you have no excuse to not buy a helmet.

Trying to understand thainess is like trying to beat a stupid person in a stupid contest its gona beat you with ease. Just give up trying. Hence why they they dont understand as they know its impossible to do so.

Indeed. As much as I personally have little time for racism, I have to suppress a slight frissant when a Thai finds himself (or herself) on the receiving end. The words poetic and justice spring to mind, though there is no excuse for common assault. The reality is that whatever land you hail from, the probability is that they have little time for Thais, who generally behave badly, perhaps on the assumption that they are better than all other nationalities a feature of the cradle-to-the-grave indoctrination that glorifies the Thai cukture ans belittle all else. That belief ought not to survive the incoming passport checks. I've seen how Thais are treated in USA (for example). I don't think I would like it if it were me.

Still, racism based on the Covid-19 virus seems a little extreme...

How do they get treated? Also are you Vehicle virgins?

  13. If he really was attacked by a white male based on his clain of where he was attacked at. Seems more the likely the attacker went out of their way to attack them. And why would someone do that unless provoked and did something to cause the attacker to do so. Normally i dont say this but under the circumstances im wandering what he did to case the attack. Maybe he cut him off or did some sort of action on the rd nearly causong him to have a serious or fatal wreck by driving with no regards to anyones life even his own. so he ended up getting his ass beat as a result. As the police would not have done anything and he took it into his own hands to teach a lesson. Just a possible theory of what happened.

The teacher was on TV last night, he seemed a perfectly reasonable young-ish guy. Not at all in denial or apologetic for his behavoir. Seemed like a decent, likeable teacher in any regualr school.

He wasn’t bothered to talk about it, I didn’t believe it was the same guy in the video, so didn’t pay too much attention.
He said the kids were constantly naughty, the kids always spent the money they were given to pay for their dinner or something.

I found that the kids in school get away with pretty much anything, discipline was never an occourence in any school that I worked in. In fact, even in the school discipline dept the PE teachers (always PE teachers) would just laugh with the naughty kids.

Which proves he thinks he is right and he knows he will not get in trouble and more then likely done it many times before.

Yes, thanks. I know what you mean. And you are correct!

It's sometimes hard to slow down and put your brain to zero ... I get carried away with all the things I have seen before and know are happening.

Back in 2010 we were researching and consulting corporates on Stuxnet, one of the first malicious code infecting industrial units of power plants. Big political story who was behind hit, Iran/US/Israel etc.

Today, I just want to update people on the importance of making a simple backup, since it always come up and is part of peoples lives and no one has one. We are all online everyday and have a lot of sh##t on that computer about our lives.

... and it's not possible to hold that very easy/topic conversation!

That I can't talk to every Thai on the street about it, ok, one thing ... but from fellow Farang expats, I would have expected a bit of higher level of conversations.

Sometimes I think I just have to dumb myself down to a level where I just enjoy the coconut trees around me ????

I really need to start doing better about backing all of my content up. I lost some pics and vids of my mom the last ill ever have of her because i wasnt careful to make sure my files were backed. My mom passed away so its impossible to ever get any pics or vids with her again. I have started back up everything on both my notebook and external hdd but lately been lazy about it. On the back up aspect i also think its good to have files that are important and dont want to lose backed up on a few different places. That wat if something happes to one of 2 back ups you still have at keast 1 or 2 more back up locations to access your files from. I botnally back up to 2 different email accounts as well as at least 1 external hdd. Backing up is not just important for hacking or stolen but also good incase of a crash or corruption in the current storage location. As that alone could destroy all your saved data.
