  1. Surely the Ministry isn't so easily duped by the obvious misdirection from the messages!! They should well know that there aren't any Thai teenagers who can even write English to that (albeit not so crash) levels nor have the capabilities to be able to circumvent the fatherland's highly sophisticated chewing gum and sticky tape cyber defenses! Yes it is obviously the work of evil foreigner 8 year olds who have managed to learn how to use Google Translate! cheesy.gif

  2. It's not Deet. There is an illegal hallucinogen used in Columbia and parts of south america that when tested in an autopsy can read positive for Deet. But this stuff turns people into walking zombies and a little too much is fatal just as in the case of the 2 girls. Wait weren't the police questioning some guy(s) from south america with the girls at the time? The amount of Deet you'd need to cause fatal poisoning like this is either military grade or bucket loads. Aren't there any scientists out here???? Jeez

  3. Symptoms

    For pyrethrins:

    • Breathing difficulty
    • Coughing
    • Loss of alertness due to imbalance in oxygen level
    • Tremors (if a large amount is swallowed)
    • Seizures (if a large amount is swallowed)
    • Upset stomach
    • Vomiting

ok but what quantity ingested is lethal in a female adult

A bucket cocktail for 200thb could do it maybe

A quick google shows that around 2gm's/kg is lethal to rats, so if use this as a base number, both girls, if one assumes a 50kg body weight had to comsume 100gms each....that's a h*ll of a lot of DEET in a drink, even in a bucket blink.png

But remember there are a multitude of catalysts that can exponentially multiply the ramifications of the primary active (DEET) so the initial findings are only that. It certainly sounds like the locals need a shakeup serving these home made cocktails in bars, but don't expect western style response here. Mai Pben Rai rules.

  4. I was shocked when I went to the Pattaya branch of Cockpit this week. I had to have ball joints and tires replaced and the diagnosis and professionalism from the mechanics was good, but the old Chinese lady owner was a complete red flag (if you'll pardon the pun)

I asked for a quote before they did the work and they gave me a handwritten piece of clap scribbled on a bit of paper, but I said OK. then when they did do the job they demanded much more money than quoted (surprise??). Well I had nothing formal to argue upon. Then when I went to pay they demanded ONLY cash even though there are 1st choice banners and credit card stickers all over the joint. We ended up settling on a compromise of cash and card and then she gives me a receipt for the whole job that looks like it's from a noodle stand vendor! No name no company stamp, this is how much I want written on it. It was so disgraceful, I felt like I was at a backyard joint with something criminal going on.

I have a company here and if we did that we would be in so much trouble from our own accountant let alone Revenue Dept. But Ahh yes sorry I am a foreigner we have different rules to go by here. Anyhow the work I guess was OK but the 1960's style of business is not for me. I will not return nor recommend them ever.

  5. Quote:

After a meeting yesterday, the Education Ministry agreed to conduct a sixpoint campaign at primary schools across the country, while the Culture Ministry, which regulates Internet cafes, will oversee sanitary measures at all outlets.

"Normal adults should probably not contract HFMD, other than those with defective immunity [systems] or whose hygiene is lacking," he said.

That's Thailand in deep s**t then.. how many Thai's can you see running to the nearest shop to buy a clean cloth & disinfectant !!

My local street vendor uses the same "old t-shirt" & bowl of cold water to wipe down all his surfaces & his cooking utensils.. followed by his hands before asking you "what would you like to eat"

hence I stopped eating at his place years ago.. after I had a word with him.. but he still does the same !!

I'm surprised Thailand is as free from epidemics as it is or are Thais just more immune to all things??

Your body's immune system will take care of everything, so doesn't matter if you use a dirty cloth. In the west there allergies are rampant in the populations, apparently because westerners tend to be obsessive about killing all germs. Doing that means your body doesn't build up any immunity. You may be surprised but there is no reason to, as all this is biological fact. But western living has probably made you a little paranoid about germs.

To a certain degree what you say is true, however western society's "obsession" with Hygiene comes from the centuries past when plagues wiped out large percentages of the population. Of course today we are much better educated and have better technologies to prevent and combat such things but the "obsession" is also one of the learnings. The WHO is greatly concerned about the next pandemics and so they should be because it is not the known pathogen and germs that will be the lethal threat to millions it is surely going to come from the vast number of mutating drug resistant pathogen and zoonotic diseases that are likely to go through transgenic shift and become humanly transmittable to which there are no drugs or remedies and to which the human immune system has no native defense. This has already occurred in 1918 when the "Spanish" influenza killed about 2% of the world's population in less than a year. Today 2% of the population would be about 140 million people. I think the word obsession would seem a little out of place if such a thing occurs again and the experts are expecting it. They just don't know when or how. An obsession with Hygiene would be more like smart survival training then eh??

  6. It would be nice if the symptoms to look for in our kids was mentioned.

I agree, or better yet what precautions to take, etc. etc. etc. etc.?

Based on the info right here in the thread already, 'sure sounds like frequent (and meticulous) hand-washing would be in order. And maybe keeping the hand sanitizer handy. If kids are involved though, unless you keep them home from school, there may not be too much you can do unless they're old enough to understand the need to keep their hands clean & away from their face.

Get a good child friendly sanitizer like DEZAVID and get the kids to wash their hands with it frequently. Adults touch their face about 18 times an hour on average and kids do so much more frequently than that. Tertiary transmission of these type of viruses are much more prevalent among young kids than anyone.

  7. If it's in downtown bangkok, then it has to be pretty much nationwide

    Why is that?

Are you sure you're not mixing it with Foot and Mouth disease?

The kids got Hand, foot and mouth disease. It is not the same.

I think u are splitting hairs.

Human foot and mouth disease also presents it on the hands. human foot and mouth, is the same add human foot, mouth and hand, or id that different from, mouth, foot and hand, or mouth, foot and hand disease?

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is often confused with foot-and-mouth disease (also called hoof-and-mouth disease), a disease of cattle, sheep, and swine. However, the two diseases are caused by different viruses and are not related. Humans do not get the animal disease, and animals do not get the human disease.

  8. US quantitative easing, or QE3, will send capital flowing into Asia, which will strengthen their currencies

the guy who said that was not burden with schooling, as it seems

QE is money printing withought backup

... if you do that the it weakens the currency

happend in like 100 countries before always with the same outcome, why do some people believe for them it would be the other way around?

one of the reasons for the EU crisis is the massive bailouts which is money printing without backup

Correct - there is no backup because Nixon (and the rest of the world's economies run by Central Banks soon followed) abandoned the Gold standard so he could fund the Vietnam War. Problem was of course that once the war was over the Banking System remained. Yep they have no Fiscal controls over them and no oversight. That is the Bankers and the Politicians. Jeez I wish people would understand that giving Politicians free run of the printing press to make money is like like giving drug addicts the keys to the pharmaceutical corporations and say to them "You be good now! don't do anything naughty!" Asia's corruption is in the open, widespread and everyone gets a little bit of it. The West's is only deemed for a small rich minority and very well concealed and much much more lethal to the masses.

  9. I think you have missed the main point by miles. Eggs are usually treated/sprayed with iodine once they are laid. This is to prevent any bacterial growth on the shell which soon migrates through the porous exterior into the inner mass where it rapidly reproduces. The form of Salmonella here is drug resistant so one assumes that it is resistant to the iodine as well, which means that it is getting through into the eggs. Refrigeration does not kill Salmonella it just slows its growth rate. The transportation methods in Thailand are surely not the cause, it is the preventative strategy at the producer that isn't working. Let's hope they forgot to spray 300 of the 10,000 eggs eh? otherwise there could well be a much bigger problem lurking...

  10. I don't really understand the headline " might reinfect kids " -- have these kids who were infected already been infected at another time ? --- or are the kids whio were infected expecting to receive another infection ? -- if so from where ? and when ? The article really does not address anything about reinfection.

Can anyone help and explain to me just what this means.

I think what they mean is that once the 72 hour incubation has passed, the child then becomes a 'donor' who will infect others regardless of their symptoms. The problem with drug resistant bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract is that it is incredibly hard to resolve.

I agree that a child can be come a carrier or as you say a "donor''. I further agree that it can be extremely difficult to eradicate, but I am still puzzled by their meaning. Salmonella, in general are extremely hardy and can survive for a long time outside of the host, but they can only re-enter the food chain from excretions from that host.

So, if this does not actually mean "reinfect', but means 'infect others', how do the excretions of the infected children get into the food of others?

I suspect that last years extensive flooding may have been responsible for distributing and enlarging this problem, since Salmonella can exist quite well for many months in a wet environment or many weeks in a dry environment. Perhaps we have not seen the last of this problem, and that is what the headline is trying to say.

Actually young children are much more susceptible to Salmonella in much smaller amounts and as the bacteria is also spread in the vomit and sometimes bodily fluids like saliva, the likelihood of tertiary transmission among young kids is high in communities that aren't as Hygiene aware or trained. I think they are really referring to (although not specified) children that had recovered from the early illness symptoms however still harbor the pathogen, which is apparently drug resistant (and one assumes also resistant to iodine - as eggs are sprayed with it when laid so as to prevent bacterial growth) and therefore has a possibility of still being able to be passed onto other kids as they share food and drinks in schools and communities etc.

  12. You can expect to see much more of this type of thing based on drug resistant and methicillin resistant varieties of bacteria and viruses that are being created and incubated in the factory farms throughout the developing worlds & the USA (EU & Aust have banned it), as they are still using the nasty old habits taught by the greedy western farming corps of old by feeding antibiotics to their animals sub-therapeutically in their feeds. Still today more than 70% of all production of antibiotics (by volume) is created for animal feeds. The drug resistant bacteria are grown and incubated in the intensively farmed animals and surely then find their way to you & children.

Margaret Chan (head of the WHO) made the statement a few months back, that "The age of safe medicine is ending" based primarily on the above-mentioned facts. See here for one report on that: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/health-chief-warns-age-of-safe-medicine-is-ending-7574579.html

This is not a Thailand or Asian problem, this is a human vs 'What the flock do we do now' problem; and it is a problem of our own making.

  13. I don't understand what flashlights and light reflectors have to do with this.

Anything to reduce the practice of drunk driving is good, but has anyone here actually seen a breathalizer used in Thailand? I haven't. And what are the penalties for drunk DUI?

Not as common as found in Western countries but certainly out there on occasion. I have had 3 in the past 3 years which of course I passed, but heard a nasty story about a guy caught this year just before songkran and he spent the whole holiday in jail awaiting the courts to convene. mmmm definitely not worth that!

  14. The bottom line here is that the vast majority of the educated Thais learn by rote and live in a feudalistic manner (never questioning the status or statements or thinking of those who are at higher pecking order, whether justified or not) throughout most levels of their thinking and daily lives. These are not however conducive conditions to develop the lateral thinking required for the investigative requirements here and this applies to the forensic and police levels. It's just not within their comfort zones and thus their competence. Yes Dr. Pornthip seems to be one of the exceptions but I hear that a lot of that is media hype overdoing what are Straight forward cases in technical reality. I surely doubt she would even touch a truly difficult set of cases like this otherwise she would have done so much earlier. There are obviously several technical aspects to all these cases that the people involved with have never encountered nor have any knowledge about. Just that in itself will guarantee that none of the Thais would EVER admit that there is something we don't know or has them stumped. Don't expect anything different from past performances. Unfortunately.

  15. I had a motorbike guy run into and scratch the front guard of my car on Fri night and seeing he did no damage to his bike I just waved him away and cop the 3-500baht cost of a repair myself (if I had done otherwise the cost and time involved would be CONSIDERABLY more). How farangs come over here and want to get wild and violent about these things is well beyond me. If he'd done that to a Thai he and his pals drinking in that bar in Soi Khao Noi would have experienced real Thai justice soon afterwards and everyone here would be slagging the locals. This Tinsley guy apparently belted Mr. Pickles with a tire iron from his car, not with his fists or anything, and he did so to the back of his head, I hope Tinsley is made to pay the 200k++ pounds in costs to the family at least before he goes to Bang Kwang. How can one not feel sad for his wife and new baby as Mr Pickles still lies in a coma in UK.
