  1. I wasn't even aware of that camera, impressive. US$1300 - not cheap. Looks like a great system though, esp with the fixed lens.

Assuming you're referring to the GF-1 it isn't a fixed lens.

SLR type compact with interchangeable lenses.

Fixed lens, as in fixed focal length, ie non-zoom.

Otherwise known as a PRIME lens

You have a choice of kit - 20 mm pancake is the popular choice but also can elect a zoom 14-40mm

    Later will add

    45/2.8 Macro (Pana-Leica) $879

  2. The digital domain does offer much more opportunity for processing.

I remember a film shot, with poor exposure.

The local shops just could not get a decent print from it.

I scanned on my negative scanner, and the standard sw immediately produced a decent image

    with no additional processing needed.

That was in addition to removing the orange bias of a colour negative

The loss of detail, and inevitable colour cast from these D+P labs is a joke. I rarely get prints but when I do (for speed) I am always dissapointed and find I can scan and PP a lot better myself.

"Printing and processing of black & white film has shot up 45% in a year, signalling a resurgence of interest in traditional 'silver gelatin' prints, according to Ilford photo. 'There is still a passion about the darkroom', said Ilford Photo sales director Steven Brierly. Brierley admitted that use of home-based darkrooms among photographic enthusiasts 'has gone'. But, he added, interest from colleges is very robust--boosted by people enrolling for photography evening classes. Brierley said that the firm's sales of 35mm b&w film remain pretty stable, despite a slight overall decline in sales worldwide. Also, Ilford's sales of 120 film have rocketed 18% in value terms, according to Brierly, partly a result of a glut of low-priced second-hand rollfilm calmeras around 18 months ago."

Married with the staggering costs of the digital "latests" this comes as no surprise.

Unfortunately, film camera costs are now rising - glad I've got my selection :)

  3. I have a 1d Mk 3 which I suspect has a similar, or maybe inferior given it is older, cleaning system. Never had to manually clean the sensor, and it has been exposed to some muck and dust at times....

Remind me not to buy any used camera gear from you! :)

Just stick it under the shower and wash it off! The dust didn't worry the body which is fully sealed. But my 24-105 lens has a slightly gritty action now, so don't buy that off me! It was Indian rally car dust and there was a lot of it. The mark IV looks good, but the price is ridiculous.

Latest reports state that both Kodak and Canon (and presumably more to come) are showing significant drops in sales BUT (in Canons case) increased profits.

At the prices tagged to their latest gear I ain't surprised!

I see the market (and the evidence is there already) shifting to these pro-sumer high IQ compacts - LX3, GF-1 etc

p.s. Only good thing is it's beginning to make my film costs look plausible :D

  4. My! you have a good camera there! :D

I think you should be very careful when it comes cleaning... especially internally, as you can scratch very easily... :)

If I remember from reading my manual (well glanced through it... who reads manuals?) It says that it should be done by Canon ...

I had my lenses & D30 sent up to BKK to Canon HQ, they cleaned & repaired as needed... told me one lens not worth fixing... It took about 2 weeks & did not cost that much. ... cannot remember now, how much.

I also have the newer 500D, it tells me when I shut off, it is cleaning the sensor... how well, I am not sure, but it's still fairly new & I do try to keep it free of dust etc.

Obviously, protect the camera as well as you can, so as to avoid internal or even external dust etc!

I don't have the MK11 (yet) - still using the MK1, but I'm investigating the effectiveness or otherwise of the self cleaning mechanism that the MK1 doesn't have

  5. Where else to bring other than Canon service center?

It's on 10th floor of Bangkok City Tower building (ABM AMRO sign on top), at the southeast corner of Sathorn - Narathiwat Rd intersection, 5 min walk from BTS Chong Nongsri station.

Sensor cleaning can be done in less than half a day, if you're willing to wait, depending on the queue. There's starbucks on the 1st floor of the Bangkok City Tower building if you choose to wait.

I had a 20 year old lens awash with fungus cleaned by them last year - perfect.

How long did that take (and how much)?

I day - I had a sensor clean at the same time and the total bill was only Thb 800 if I remember correctly

  7. My Canon 350D has a little something - fungus? - growing on the sensor and I would like to have it cleaned. Does anyone have any recommendations in Bangkok? Better yet somewhere with a quick turnaround, ie, two or three days? Warranty service not needed as the warranty expires years ago.

Canon service center - usually about 1 hour - Thb 300

If it's real bad maybe the next day

I had a 20 year old lens awash with fungus cleaned by them last year - perfect.

p.s. why not invest in the Visible Dust products and do it yourself the next time - I clean my sensor every 2/3 weeks and it takes 20 minutes at a time. Money well spent and saves me traveling to BKK.

  8. the first shot is not nice at all....... blue and green should never be seen

    the second is surreal

please explain why blue and green should never be seen?

below two good examples from the web of blue and green together..

It's an out of date expression from THE FASHION INDUSTRY wherein it was taboo (allegedly) to put blue and green together - nature tends to disregard it!

  9. Isn't this pretty obvious when you remove your cheapo UV or protective filter and put it on a piece of white paper?

And for that reason I only use Kenko's L41 Super Pro Wide series UV filters which guarantees 99% optical transmission. But it's so thin I once shattered the filter fitted on 135mm lens in a protective case dropping it from below waist height. It broke into so small shred, tiny pieces of glass was falling out from inside the lens months after I broke it. It used to be the most expensive UV filter Kenko had to offer but they now seem to have even better filter with a coating that only reflects 0.3% of incident light.

All my Contax G series lenses are fitted with Kenko UV filters and I have a range of black and white filters from the same Company. I must say they are good.

  10. I was sorting out my camera bag a few days ago and came across a pola filter which I'd forgotten I had.

Haven't used it for yonks so thought I'd give it a run

I'd forgotten how good they are for controlling reflection, glare and enhancing colours and skies.

The container (being white in the sun) was really glistening and potentially was going to be blown out but the pola saved it.

The little girls dress, again white and full sun, is well contained also.

I guess I might be using this a lot more! :)

  11. Vulc, no offense but the composition is snap shot in nature. Great lighting - good mood though.

No offense "James" - it does (unfortunately) come over as a snap shot but actually it was set up.

I wanted to shoot the arrangement but (obviously) this was sensitive. A camera in a bar is pretty sensitive eh? :)

I wanted also to convey the bar scene as we know it.

So, I cajoled the girls to pose to mask the real intent and not draw attention to myself.

I needed to shift a little to get the background in hence the clipped face on the right and the inclusion of an arm on the left. (too lazy to crop)

I hope you see my intent - under the sensitive and precarious circumstances I was quite pleased with the outcome

  12. Nice use of light Vulcan and good use of DOF.

I have been conpemplating getting a 24 L down the track, I imagine it would be the perfect indoor, close quarters lens??

It is a good lens and I like the 24mm angles. Street work, night shots and landscape fair well. Well worth the money. Possibly my favourite lens

  13. Nice. I suppose without flash?

Now do you like your new lens?

it's the one you bought immediately before you left for Cambodia right?

That was a 35mm L I bought before Cambodia - this is a 24mm L I've had a long time - my favourite lens without a doubt - sharp, great colours and contrast

  14. I'm raising funds for my Leica S2 :) so a few things have to go!

First up is my G10:- I'll offer it here first then off to Ebay if no takers
