  1. Are you a developer? Those error messages are most often associated with people running their Flash development software in debug mode.

If you're just a regular user, then I'd recommend a clean removal of all your Flash plugins -- see the adobe site for the clean-removal tool -- and then reinstall.

  2. There was an article a few months back about a coalition of retailers -- including 7-Eleven -- banding together to stop/limit the use of plastic bags. Very sorry to see that nothing apparently came of it.

It's wonderful how many countries, particularly those in the developing world, are banning plastic bags in their entire country and using other methods to eliminate their use. Sorry to say Thailand is not among those.

If you've dived in the Gulf of Thailand, particularly off Pattaya, the impact of the plastic bag problem becomes very evident.

Recently there was a story about how the Navy's turtle conservation center had done an autopsy on one turtle and found its insides full of plastic bags it had eaten, thinking they were the jellyfish turtles love to snack on.

It's easy to scoff and make jokes like "it will never happen" but it will benefit all of us if we do what we can to cut down on plastic bag use.

  3. Pattaya TO Bangkok is definitely quicker, as it doesn't make any stops until the outskirts of Bangkok. The vast majority of time the trip from the Pattaya station to On Nut -- where I'll generally get off rather than sit in traffic all the way to Ekamai -- is 1 hr. 50 minutes. Very good if you ask me.

The usual time on the way back is about 2:10-2:20. Again, this varies greatly on the day, the hour, the traffic and how many people want to get off at the three stops in/near Pattaya (Laem Chabang, Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and one other).

Still, even 2.5 hours is decent time from Ekamai. And for 113 baht a few minutes are hardly worth complaining about.

  4. On the 4th floor of Tukcom in Pattaya, amid all the pirated games, software and movies, there is, in fact, a LEGIT PC Games store. Run by a very nice lady I've known for years. And the prices are much better than in the west, except for games imported from there, which are no cheaper (but not much more expensive.)

  5. This just in....

Apple has announced that the iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on Friday, May 28. Both iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available; online pre-orders will begin on Monday, May 10.

The iPad was originally set to roll out internationally at the end of April, but “surprisingly strong US demand” forced Apple to push it back.

In addition to the nine countries listed above, Apple also plans to release iPad in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July.

It will announce availability, local pricing and pre-order plans for these nine additional countries at a later date.

  6. A Beach Road transvestite learned the hard way that if you're going to pick someone's pocket, it's probably best the victim is not a police officer.

Senior Sgt. Maj. Adirek Chamnanchan, head of Crime Suppression at the Pattaya Police Station, arrested 23-year-old Pongsathorn Joomsilp at a Second Road beer bar May 2 after detecting the ladyboy's hand in his pocket.

Pongsathorn confessed he needed cash to pay for several motorbike tickets but was unaware he was trying to take the money he owed police from the police.

Adirek said he stopped in the bar near Mike Shopping Mall to chat with a friend who had hailed him while he was on his way to work. At the time, he was carrying 1,400 baht in his pocket.

  7. He obviously has to update his firmware (iPhone software).

The App Store was added with version 2.0. If he doesn't have it, then he's been putting up with some pretty crappy iPhone software for a long time.

Plug it into iTunes and click Update.

Note, though, while he can get into the App store, all apps may not work totally with his old phone.

  9. A couple months back The Avenue brought in a new marketing manager to try and turn things around and the Night Market was a big part of that. But, personally, I hate it. Hard to walk through to get to Wow or the movies at night, hard to see with all the low-hanging bulbs and if I were a shop owner there, I'd be pissed off as anything that I'd paid big rent to have a bunch of flea market sellers block the view and access to my shop.

It has, however, brought a lot of trade to the complex, so....

I think a decent food court could work, particularly at night if they advertise it in the night market.

  12. Present them with a big snake and Thais generally will run from it; unless it gives out lucky lottery numbers, apparently.

Such is the case in Village No. 8 in the Tanman area. There residents stumbled upon the nest of a giant python in a wooded area near the Saknok Reservoir.

Rather than kill the snake, some in the crowd who went to see it asked the serpent for lucky numbers to bet on in the lottery. When everyone who played the number 69 won, the slithering soothsayer was elevated to god-like status.

Now villagers are going to visit the snake in the molehill to pray, present it with flowers incense and candles and rub it with powder from dawn until dusk in hopes they'll be the next big winners.

Reports that the snake asked for a cut of the winnings in return for being constantly pestered by superstitious locals remain unconfirmed.

  13. HRH Princess Chulabhorn told a meeting of 2,500 physicians that burning joss sticks in temples and shrines could leader to cancer due to the materials inside the items used by worshipping Buddhists.

Speaking to the annual meeting of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand April 29, the princess said a study by the Chulabhom Research Institute which bears her name focused on cancer risks from exposure to air pollution. The study surveyed students, street vendors, traffic police and even monks. The risks from air pollution even exist inside temples, she said, due to the burning of the incense sticks, which can contain carcinogenic substances.

The World Health Organization estimates more than 800,000 people a year die from cancer caused by air pollution. Developing countries, with fewer controls and more burning of coal and other substances, face increasing risks.

  14. If you have been happy these past years with the N95 -- I had an N93, then an N82 and now an N86 -- then you should seriously hold off until September and get the new Nokia N8. 12 MP camera, GPS, capacitive (iPhone-line) touchscreen, web-centric and the first ever 5-band worldphone.

I was leaning hard toward the new 4G iPhone, but now not so sure. New iPhone will be 30,000 baht. The 16 GB N8 will be about 17,000 baht.

    As for other options?

    Skip the Dell for sure.

Take a hard look at the HTC Desire, the best smartphone you can buy right now. (iPhone #2).

Only go Blackberry if you really are into texting and IMing.

  15. I think the (current) poll results have it about right: Crystal and Lee are tied. Crystal was running away from it for a while, but she has stumbled in the past two weeks and the list of the songs Idols can perform next week has no obvious strong tunes for her. I think it will be another challenging week.

BTW, on Twitter, I correctly predicted the Top 5 back when it was Top 12. (Top 4, actually).

My original Top 3 prediction was Crystal, Lee & Casey. Can't believe Casey survived this week.

Usually I feel a bit either of a loss or smug satisfaction when one goes home. But with Aaron this week, neither. I never expected him to win but he's hugely likable and think he did the best he could. No shame in going home at #5. I think he has a better shot at a record deal than Michael or Casey, one of whom will get the boot next week.

  17. True (UBC) is perfectly fine with me. I think only those guys want 200 channels of only the types of programs they enjoy bitch about True, which obviously has to serve a wide variety of audiences and tastes. The Gold package is about 1,500 baht and I add on 3 HBO channels to a pittance of 150 baht more a month.

The Platinum package has a few more channels, but unless you want something on one of them -- American Idol or Glee being the two biggest draws -- or the extra sports channels, it's not really worth it.

In Pattaya, you've got Sophon and Banglamung Cable and both are bare minimum. Cheap, though. About 300 baht a month.

  18. I'm with NanLaew on this: It's their machine. They can do what they want with it. You should not have personal programs or information on it.

As for leaking intellectual property to a "junior IT guy," they -- as said -- would not need any malware. They have proper access to anything on your machine.

If you are genuinely concerned about snooping, then encrypt the documents you think are too sensitive and/or password protect the directory (folder) they are in. Both are possible under Windows 7/Vista and to an extent, Windows XP with an NTFS-formatted hard drive.
