The Ministry of Health yesterday announced the discovery of Covid-19 traces on frozen buffalo meat, imported from India, from three out of five containers.

However, the exporters have refuted this finding saying meat samples underwent testing in advanced labs in India and they were all found to be SARS-COV-2-negative.

They also questioned how Covid-19 can lay dormant and live for the almost three months it takes for the meat to be shipped from India, when there is no scientific evidence that the virus can survive for so long on surfaces.

The Health Ministry said it conducted a virological analysis virus on five containers of frozen buffalo meat at the Tri-Khod dry port in Phnom Penh.

It said the frozen buffalo meat was imported by two companies Bovini Food Co Ltd and Ashary Investment & Construction.

After the discovery of buffalo meat containing the virus, Kun Nhim, Director General of Customs and Excise of Cambodia, said that the two companies are cooperating with a joint working group to destroy the meat in accordance with the procedures in force.

In a statement obtained by Khmer Times, the two Indian exporters said they had tested samples of the buffalo meat in ISO 17025 accredited labs in India and they were all found to be free from the virus.

In view of the conflicting results in India and Cambodia, the Indian exporters, through the Embassy of India and their importers in Cambodia, have requested the Ministry of Health and the Adhoc Covid-19 Committee to retest  fresh samples from the same containers to reconfirm the test results and if possible conduct testing in an advanced lab in Singapore.

They said any finding of a genome is not an indication of an active virus since the containers left India in April 2021 and reached Cambodia in July 2021.

It said that there is no scientific evidence to prove that Covid-19 virus can survive on food and food packaging material for a period of almost three months.

Covid-19 is a respiratory illness primarily transmitted through person-to-person contact. There is no evidence to date of viruses, that cause respiratory illnesses, can be transmitted via food or food packaging.

As per World Health Organisation (WHO), there is no evidence that the virus that causes Covid-19 spreads to people through food.

International Meat Secretariat (IMS), Paris has also confirmed that there is no evidence that Covid-19 can be spread through contact with food or food packaging.  Coronaviruses need a live animal or human host to multiply and survive and cannot multiply on the surface of food packages.

To date, no other country in the world has ever reported coronavirus in frozen food or its packaging/or surface. All available information suggests that it is absolutely not possible for the virus to transfer through frozen food. Stringent protocol and Good Management Practices at the highest level is implemented by the Indian exporters to produce and export quality meat.

Dr Hok Kim Cheng, the Ministry of Health’s technical director-general, and Health Ministry spokeswoman Or Vandine could not be reached for comment yesterday.

My 1st vaccine was on the 7th June with a 2nd appt 16 weeks later on 28th September. Policy has since changed to 12 weeks for the 2nd dose. The Mor Phrom app where I originally booked is showing nothing. I visited the hospital where I was first vaccinated and they would not change my date to 12 weeks but confirmed the 16 week appt. I have two of the 7 health conditions.

Silence from the Thai govt and Health Ministry about the 1,500,000 Pfizer vaccine doses (20% for foreigners/expats?) donated by US.

Same silence about the already here Japanese donation of 1.050.000 AZ vaccine doses.

Don't the foreign donations (Foreigner allocated %) cover the number of expats here?

If they offered a 2nd shot of the Pfizer vaccine, I would take that.

I am same, got the first AZ on the 8th of June and the second one will be in September.
