I recall a friend transferring a significant amount of cash to AUD in order to benefit from high interest rates. As far as he was concerned it was a no-brainer. And then all that interest was wiped out (and more) with the dive in the Australian dollar.

A currency that pays much higher interests than other currencies is a no brainer that that the currency is under pressure and will devalue.

If he didn't move out of the AUD yet, he will be in for another 10% decline I presume

You have to remember that a lot of Thaivisa members do not have English as their first language.

I do believe that the member that made the post is a UK citizen, one pissed ,as hell from drinking 1 bottle of vodka as he admitted in his following post in another thread, and that they speak English in the UK but my first language is indeed not English.

but said if the exchange rate went to 42.00 then to come back as all would be good.

From that I understand that they use the calculation in the correct way, as Ubonjoe states they should use it, because if the exchange rate went back to 42, that would not make any difference for those few days in October that you claim to be the reason for the rejection.

  4. I have a deep fryer ( with oil ) I brought from Europe years ago, as i like my french fries once a week.

I'm very satisfied with it, wasn't it the cleaning of the fryer and surroundings.

It's the type with the smokeless lid and can be taken completely apart, but after making fries 4 -5 times, it's still a hard job to clean the sticky mess.

I don't use it for anything else than french fries.

When in Europe few months ago I considered bringing a new one over, but these days it is almost impossible to find one that uses oil.

So I would like to ask members that use such an oil free fryer, do the french fries really taste the same as if fried in oil?

  5. I very rarely buy foreign food stuff in Thailand unless it is a heavy promotion, since I can live without, especially at those rip off prices, but when I go to my home country or have friends coming over, the freezer get stuffed.

Just a few days ago I had friend bring me President Camembert 1.70 Euro for 250gr - 515 Baht in Thailand

Chorizo dried salami 7.80 Euro per kilo - 1750 Baht in Thailand

Regular sliced salami with garlic. 0.5 Euro for 150 gram - Thailand about 300 Baht for similar.

Sliced Gouda cheese - forgot the price, but for sure again 1/5th of Thailand.

NordVPN is working fine here, I pay only $3.99 per month.

I see now they have a special promotion for a 3 year plan $2.99.

    NordVPN

But BBC will always be a challenge , its been like a mouse and cat game the last year.

Never a problem with ITV or C4 . With BBC you need to try different servers until you find one that is stable. NordVPN change their UK  servers almost weekly and that helps.

There are also VPN's that have a dedicated BBC Iplayer streaming server, a dedicated Netflix - Hulu and Amazon server, no need to play around with servers as they always work from the first click and they are way cheaper than Nord

Hmmm...do you think they were paying for the rights to broadcast all of those channels?

Do you think any of those local cable providers pay broadcasting rights?

Before you start thinking about that, most of them have many channels on them for which broadcasting rights for Thailand aren't even available.

There's no proof of any spying equipment. Even Germany's IT watchdog admits there is no proof. Iran wants Huawei because the NSA hasn't figured out a way to break the encryption on Huawei equipment.

Germany's IT watchdog has expressed scepticism about calls for a boycott of Chinese telecoms ... "For such serious decisions like a ban, you need proof," the head of Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Arne Schoenbohm, told Spiegel, adding that his agency had no such evidence.

If you say so, then all those countries like there are UK - Canada - US and a few others have it wrong by banning Chines telecoms.

Oh wait, even Germany agrees with that.'

    http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Chinas_ZTE_loses_major_German_mobile_contract_999.html

Chinese telecoms giant ZTE lost its biggest contract in Germany, network provider Telefonica on Friday told AFP, as resistance mounts across the West to Beijing's infrastructure manufacturers.

ZTE's contract to maintain mobile operator O2's network, which is owned by Spain's Telefonica, "will come to an end as planned at the end of the year," said a spokesman for the German firm, confirming a report from business daily Handelsblatt.

    <snip>

But some observers raised eyebrows at the BSI's apparent dismissal of cyber security risks concerning Huawei.

"I believe it's wrong to suggest that the concerns about Chinese espionage are unfounded and easy to detect," telecom security expert Ronja Kniep told AFP.

"Even if Huawei has no official relationship with the Chinese government, that doesn't mean Chinese services aren't using the company and its technology as vehicles for espionage."

Actually, it was a ruling by the UN’s international court of justice in the Hague.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/oct/03/international-court-of-justice-orders-us-to-lift-new-iran-sanctions

Sorry, I didn't realise that spy equipment had anything to do with the terms mentioned in the UN ruling

“The court considers that the United States, in accordance with its obligations under the 1955 treaty, must remove, by means of its choosing, any impediments arising from the measures” relating to humanitarian needs, medicines, foodstuff and agricultural commodities and civil aviation, the ruling said.

Trudeau is of course well aware that Meng Wanzhou is not a US national, was not on US soil and neither Canada nor China have approved the renewal of the Iran embargo, the renewal being a unilateral decision by the US.

Who would have thought that a country making loads of money selling spy equipment to Iran and other countries in the region, didn't approve the Iran embargo

When they visit your house uninvited, and you get grumpy coz they want to see and photo all docs again, they threaten to revoke your visa. Is that in the rules? if so i must have missed that on the forms, do not get grumpy only our dear leader is allowed to get grumpy. ????

I am not married so I haven't had the honor of such a visit, but each and every report of such a visit that I have seen on this forum mentioned that the " visitors" were very friendly and polite, and for sure I have never seen any mention about threatening to revoke visas during such visits.

    I suggest you stop trolling

Yes it’s  quieter. (Friends who live in Phuket say the same thing.)  I’ve been twice lately to Central Festival where it wasn’t crowded. Maybe half of the regulars have move down to terminal 21 . Even MK in Central was nearly empty where usually you have to  queue. Jomtien is specially empty. The beach road restauarants are looking quite miserable. After all, Christmas is next week and it should be the busiest time of the year. I’m going to terminal 21 this weekend to have a look . Let’s  face it, Thailand isn’t so fashionable any more, exchange is bad, and the infrastructure non existant. The world knows that’s its one of the most dangerous countries in the world for road accidents , there’s a lot to put normal tourists off.

I can agree wholeheartedly with your post, as you will notice from my post earlier in this thread.

i live here more than 2 decades, and in the last 10 years I have noticed that westerner high season last about 2 - 3 weeks.

So since Christmas is on a Tuesday this year, which mean that most westerners will have holiday without taking up vacation days starting 22 - 25 December, I think we will see a large increase of western tourist starting 23 December, and see them disappear again on 7 or 8 January

  13. When I logged in this evening I had that red banner at the top of my page, so I thought oh no not again, but it was a notification that there were issues with the system and that they were aware of it.

Anyone else aware of those issues yet? :whistling:

By the way, had to wait 8 minutes to post this because of wrong timing ????

Gonna put my clock in the middle of my screen, so it's easier to figure out when is the right time to refresh page or open a bunch of threads in different tabs to pass the next 8 minutes.
