I have been living in Thailand for the past 15 yrs now. The main reasons I am here is because it is cheap, there is world class shopping, hospitals, restaurants, a good variety of imported foods, safety and the people are very nice. The draw back for me now has been the feeling of not being welcome by the government and the way they treat foreigners here (much like a criminal in my opinion). This constant need to report where you are gives me a feeling the government sees me as guilty until proven otherwise.
In regards to Vietnam, I first visited Ho Chi Minh City about 8yrs ago I thought was the most boring city I have ever visited and I never wanted to go back. Hanoi had some character but still a dump in my opinion.
Since then I have visited Hoi An, Dalat and Sapa in the high mountains. I have also returned to Ho Chi Minh this year for a visa run.
I have to say I am impressed to see how things have changed for the better over in HCMC. The traffic is still a mess and there is no BTS (metro) until 2022.
I still don't see myself living there just yet but I have to say it is becoming a much more attractive option. The new free trade agreement that was approved with the EU will certainly score a lot of points on my list (cheaper western food, wine and spirits AND CARS). Vietnam doesn't have a retirement visa but has very lose visa policies like unlimited visa runs.
Bangkok and Thailand is still best choice but there is a new horse in the race and it is closing in quick. It would be interesting to see where these 2 cities and countries will look like in 5yrs.

I just got into a heated argument with the agent who rented the condo to me. She says owner will just provide the documents and I have to do it myself. I told her this is something the owner is suppose to do, not me. I told her I will not do it and I will just tell that to immigration and the owner will have to pay a fine. <deleted> is this they just throw me all this work for something they have the obligation to do. Just want to collect the rent money from the foreigner and be sabai sabai.
I am not doing his work. I am tired of taking s^%T from them and be just cool about it.

Pretty clear this government wants to get rid of most foreigners. Just come spend your money and go home is what they want.

Except that the CSD is on Phaholyothin Road, not Lat Phrao.
Yes, thank you for correcting me. Still at least a year until the building is completed.

I was at CSD (Crime Suppression Division) this week and they told me the immigration will move from Chaeng Wattana to a new building that is being built next to CSD in Lad Phrao. The CSD is also walking distance to one of the new BTS stations being built near by. Looking at the new building seems like it will be ready in about 1 year. The person who told me was a high ranking official at CSD, reliable information.

I lived in Ho Chi Minh for about a year.
Banking sucks in Vietnam, if u dont have a work permit you can open a bank account.in some banks but you can only make deposits if they come from overseas. U can do the in-out Visa runs without any problem. On the Visa side of things extremely easy to get tourist visas as much as you want.
If you marry a Vietnamese women they let you buy a home or land UNLIKE HERE.
Much easier to open a business and you can own it all. Also no BS of having to hire 3 useless Thais to get a work permit.
I have no doubt Vietnam will be a better country than Thailand in 10 yrs.
Only down side is the fun, entertainment options are lacking, I thought HCM was boring as hell.
Upside: much more welcoming to foreigners than Thailand

Other nation like Europe and the US should start to treat Thais like they treat foreigners here. Make then report every 90 days and dont ever offer residency or even the right to work if they marry or have children. This is just not right

I am from one of those nationalities and I got 90 days when I crossed the border 2 days ago. Message me privately

I am trying to help a good friend of mine. He went to Phnom Phen to apply for a single entry tourist Visa and they asked him for proof he was a resident in Cambodia. Apparently at least for Chinese one cannot apply for tourist visas in Phnom Phen unless you are a resident in Cambodia. Can anyone tell me if it is the same for the other consulates in the region?
-
Thank you for your reply. I just want to avoid the airports. I am wondering which one of these is the most hassle free option.

Hello,
Has anyone done any Visa runs to Baan Pak Kad or Cham Yaem lately?
I am in Cambodia and will come back on a brand new passport. I am looking to do a Visa exempt entry. I am wondering if it is doable.

Pathetic thai immigration. I don't know anyone who would come here to work illegally for a miserable salary. Oh yes many fangs would love to take the jobs from Thais.

A few years ago I had a hard time w immigration because I was going to pro-language. Once I got pull aside at airport and the immigration officer mentioned to the supervisor I went to pro language, this happened about 2 yrs ago.
I wonder how much time an ed Visa can buy you nowadays

You need an FDA license to sell supplements legally. You can probably import a few and sell but if you plan on importing let's say 20 bottles of this and that you will run a bigger risk of getting them taxed or seized.
-
People need to stop doing visa runs by air.
There is no limit of how many times you can come in but the immigration officer will tell you whatever he wants. It is useless to argue w them.
-
I would go to Laos first. Don't let too many visas accumulate in your passport and use land border as much as possible.
I got turned down in Ho Chi Minh before for a tourist visa because they saw an ed visa in my passport. Had to fly to Laos and apply there.
Good luck

I saw some low prices wine from Chile the other day. I would think since Thailand has a free trade agreement with then it should be cheaper.

I made a transfer from my credit union 2 weeks ago and worked normally. I am switching from ACH transfer anyway.
I set up a coinbase account to buy crypto coins in the US then transfer the coins to my bx account in Thailand and sell the coins there and get the cash out.
I did a trial transfer already and it was cheaper.

I have been here for roughly 6 yrs. Moved to HoChi Minh one yr. I hated and moved back.
I tried also living in Spain after, took me 2 months to see I made a mistake leaving Thailand.
I am back here again and now have no plans to leave.
Of course we all have different lifestyles but taking the cost benefit into account Thailand is still best.
If money was not an issue would I be here? Maybe not, at least not full time for sure.

I am on the same boat as you, under 50 and living here for 6 yrs already.
2 yrs ago I got stopped at the airport, had to pay tea money or be deported. I paid the tea money and shortly after moved to Ho Chi Minh for a 1yr break from Thailand.
I am back again on tourist visas but I never use the airports again. Only land borders and I don't let my passport fill up w visa and stamps. I get a new passport almost every year. Many times they dont look at the history in the computer, if your passport is new the chances of them scrutnizing you are much lower. Land borders are easier and I just hire a local visa agent that knows and works w immigration so I pay extra, my last visa run was this week and I give an extra 3k baht to immigration. Much cheaper than an elite visa and no hassles of having to go to school.
Doing the 1 month visa extensions are not a good thing.
If you are not sure you will in Thailand for 5 yrs I heard the elite visa can be transferred/ sold to another person. You would have to go to their office on Sathorn to get this clarified.
Good luck

Hey I was reading your post from 2014 and I think I better go to Ban Pakard instead. How did you get there from BKK? Was there a bus that goes straight there or you have to switch transportation in Chantaburi?
-
Yes Bangkok, sorry about that.
Thailand VS Vietnam? Which one will be better in 5yrs?

I read every response on my post and it is great to hear everyone's opinion.
Both countries are great, as someone said if you have 800k baht in the bank and is a retiree and does not want to do any entrepreneurial work I truly think Thailand is better than Vietnam.
For business Vietnam has made some very big changes and currently they are more open than Thailand. You can own 100% of the share in your company and don't need to employ any Vietnamese. So for a small business Vietnam is probably the better choice.
Talk about ladies...... the Thai ladies are more interested in foreigners than the Vietnamese counterpart. Vietnamese women are more conservative in my opinion and not so interested in foreigners.
Easier to get a girl in Thailand for sure.
The people of Vietnam seem to be more happy and genuine than the Thais.
Vietnamese men specially like to talk to foreigners on a friends level, they are interested in knowing your background and your culture.
Thai men are absolutely not interested in knowing foreigners or being friends w us.
Bangkok is the safer city. Ho Chi Minh specially has a huge petty theft problem and the honking is just a nuisance to say the least.
Vietnam has been opening itself more and more to foreigners, Thailand has not but they will very soon when they see all the business Vietnam will take away from them. This will put some pressure on Thailand for sure.
The free trade agreement they signed w Europe is a game changer and I have read some articles on Nikkei that Thailand is now worried because it will take serious business from here, the article mentioned specially the auto industry.
Getting married to a Vietnamese lady gives a foreigner more benefits than marring a Thai. One of then is being allowed to purchase a house under your name.
