As of today, you're ok. US is not in any list and Japan is in group 2 so it's just a temperature scan at airport.

As of today... that's actually the big issue and the uncertainty for us resident in Thailand.

I am flying to Europe this week and you never know how you will be able to come back.

Right...it's changing multiple times per day and we may have not seen the worst of the "official" words on the crisis. Very well could change by the time I travel back here. Maybe I'll have to fly from Japan to Laos or Cambodia and take a bus into Thailand.

  2. I'm okay with having lots of people on a scooter (saw five plus a chicken the other day). My personal opinion is the biggest impact could be had by more enforcement of speeding laws and things like not riding the wrong way on roads and not riding on sidewalks. The other day on a highway, a scooter passed me with two adults and an infant. No helmets. They had to be going over 90kph. Not a slow village jaunt to school. If they had to swerve, they'd wreck. Also, making people accountable for causing other people to wreck. I see people in cars and on scooters flying across lanes or out into traffic without looking and with no regard for others and this causes others to swerve, sometimes wrecking.

For the 3863763 times... they flipped, changed their mind. And lost their face.

But, they know their fellow Thai people will work to try to see it as their not losing face...case in point:

(Conversation between this writer and his Thai wife a few minutes ago:)

Me: Okay, so, it looks like I'll be fine with no mandatory quarantine when I come back from my trip from the U.S.

Her: You will have to stay in for two weeks.

Me: No. They are saying no mandatory quarantine. Anyway, I'm in transit in Tokyo and Japan is now not on the list.

Her: But, it was on the list.

Me: So. There's no quarantine for the countries that are on the list unless you have symptoms.

Her: But, they do mean for you to do that.

    Me (facepalming). ...

  4. I was planning on flying from BKK to the U.S. via Japan transit in a few days with a return via same transit on 3/21. For some reason, I had developed foolish hope that the Thai government would come up with something like a coherent policy in re incoming travelers so I could decide whether I needed to cancel my trip or not. Not sure why I did that. The events of the last couple of days show that it will remain a <deleted>show past the time when I need to decide.

If I do return and have to do "self-quarantine" does anyone yet know how to do that AND report to health officials every day?

One step ahead, 2 steps backward, 1 and half on the left, 2 1/4 on the right...

After 3 days, it's still unclear.

IS A FRENCH, GERMAN (complete the list) TOURIST, WITH NO SYMPTOMS, WILL BE QUARANTINED WHEN HE ARRIVES IN BANGKOK AIRPORT FOR 2 WEEKS ?

    YES OR NO ?

Monday yes. Tuesday no. Wednesday... sorry too fast, I erase my Facebook post. Thursday perhaps ? Friday tik mak... Saturday "oh <deleted> we are deep into the crapper what have we done" etc.

    ????

    YES OR NO ?

I need to know this. I have a flight from BKK to the U.S. via Japan in just a few days. Plan to stay there for one week, then return via transit in Japan (which so far has been on the list). I really, really, really want to know if I will be put into one of those guarded, undisclosed locations for quarantine for some (yet to be determined and communicated) time. If the quarantine is "just stay home for two weeks," I can handle that. I'm not enthusiastic about getting placed in some facility for weeks, though.

  6. Then, there's this...

"The Public Health Ministry on Thursday reported four new local coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases - men aged 20-42 years who arrived from Iran and Italy in the past week. It was also confirmed that healthy people returning from Covid-19 risk countries will be quarantined at specific and guarded facilities - the countries and facilities still to be announced."

So, we learn today that when we return from traveling to or through a country on the list, we'll have to be quarantined in a guarded military facility. For real?!

  7. So, this article seems to say that instead of telling people to stay at their home for two weeks, the people arriving from the countries on the list may be put into guarded military bases.

    "

Dr Suwannachai said that healthy people returning from Covid-19 risk countries would be quarantined at specific and guarded facilities. Previous returnees were being monitored.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said five military compounds were prepared to quarantine Thai workers who would return from South Korea.

Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantrawanit declined to elaborate on their locations, citing security reasons."

  8. So, this is the latest thing I've seen...

I'm currently at Swampy waiting for a flight to Europe transiting via Seoul, South Korea and hope to be able to return same way next week. The check-in lady was leafing through every page of my passport so I asked her what she was looking for. She told me it was to see if I had been to China recently (No). I asked her if there was a problem and she said "all ok, but you may not be able to come back". I asked why and she told me "everyone coming from 9 countries will have to quarantine - and that's if flights are not blocked". Fxxxxxg great! I reckon she must be a follower of Cxxx Anutin's Facebook.

I will be in the same boat (airplane) soon. I plan to travel from BKK to the U.S. via Japan and then come back via the same transit in about a week. Wondering now if I can get back in and/or what I face coming back. Would be nice if they would decide what they are doing.

  10. So, True isn't giving a convincing explanation of the issue or fixing it yet. We had 3BBB before and then pretty much everyone in the neighborhood switched to True..so, it may partly be an issue of how many local people are accessing the service. So, in the short-term, I did this: I went and had the old 3BBB service restored and I plugged right into the router with an ethernet cable. Now it's fast and no drops. And, easier than getting another device and sim card since we still had the old equipment.

Internet via a sim card will always be slower or less data than a cabled in service. If your internet cuts off 10 times a day, that is a fault,

    Get your existing service repaired.

I'm going to talk to them to see if they can fix it. However, reading in here and elsewhere, it seems that Thai internet service providers are over-selling their services on inadequate infrastructure.  So, I'm only cautiously hopeful that True can provide a relative fix to the problem. I don't need a super fast speed as I'm using Skpe type (and smaller, lower resolution) video chats.

  12. I currently live in BKK and engage in video chats with people in the U.S. We upgraded our internet service in our apartment to the fastest non-business package offered by True. However, it just totally cuts out (for 1-3 minutes at a time) about 10 random times per day and regularly results in dropped video chats. I'm wondering if I get a personal hotspot device then buy a high-speed sim card via AIS (or other provider) then tie my computer to that if I would prevent these dropped chat sessions. Anyone done this type of work-around? I don't want to pay 50kB/month for a business connection. Seems like one can get a hotspot device for around 5k and a high-speed sim for 600-900B/month. That would be comparable to what we're paying for the current True service.

  13. Anyone think at some point the Thai government will figure out that they actually have quite a lot of digital nomads/freelancers willing to properly register/be legal and pay Thai taxes? It's such a narrow situation, seems like they could carve out the situation of someone physically located in Thailand doing work via a computer and taking money from clients who are not physically in Thailand at the time of the service. Create a special work permit for that situation and problem solved for everyone.
