  1. I was just in Makro today and seen this Copia fish, but did not buy because it did not look very appetizing,as it was a brownish colour, and looking it up on Google it says its an oily fish, while Cod is not except for the livers, I have tried NZ Hokki,Alaska Pollock both from Makro and they also had an oily after taste,so the wife had to eat them ,she who will eat anything !, So Mekong Bob did it have an oily taste?

Does not sound like it is Cobia then since Cobia is a white chunky meat similar to cod

The cobia I bought at Makro yesterday was labeled in both English & Thai (cobia & pla-chon tha-le) fish "slices" (fillets). White chunks with subtle tan streaks. Not snow-white like the snowfish served in Zen Restaurant, but not brown chunks either. The taste was excellent, not oily at all. The clear plastic bag was labeled "Twin Fish" Frozen Cobia Slice, produced in Samut Sakhon Province by Ao Thai Frozen Foods, net weight 800 grams, 190 Thai baht.. A bit of "freezer burn" on the contents, no big deal.

  2. Hmmm, never saw that before, i will definately keep an eye out for it,

as this Pacific cod is rather expensive, thanks for the tip meat boy!

there was quite a lot of posts in the western food forum on the best fish,as i was brought up on fish and six loved cod and haddock, but since i have lived here i missed my fish till this [cobia] was recomended by someone in patts.with a fish and chip shop, deep fried in batter i wont have nothing else.

This thread began with sausages at Sausage King, and then moved to cod fish at Yummy Pizza. Both topics of interest to many, I am sure.

Meatboy brought to our attention an ocean (saltwater) fish available in Thailand that he said is a very good substitute for the Atlantic cod and haddock used in authentic English fish & chips. It's cobia fish, a sustainable white fish fillet that is a high-quality alternative to the more costly and often difficult to obtain grouper, red snapper, halibut, mahi mahi, and cod. It's also known as Black Kingfish, but in Thailand it's better known as "pla-chon tha-le" (ปลาช่อนทะเล). This fish is now being commercially farmed in the Phuket area. It's nalso available in frozen fillets in Makro (Hang Dong), and I tried it yesterday evening. Very nice fish!

The Thai name given to this fish is quite misleading. The term can mean "ocean snakehead fish," but I don't think these two fish are of the same species at all. You may order "copia" and be served "snakehead"!

Anyone care to start another "fish & chips" thread?

  3. COD.

There are TWO restaurants in town where COD is on the menue.

Yummy is B210 for COD & Chips and Monkey Kitchen is B239 for their US East Coast version of Fish & Chips with COD.

Yummy is best for us Brits. Onest.

If SK follows his plans there will be THREE.

Why oh Why should COD not be on sale in CM ?

    So, jonwilly, what's the deal?

Cod and Haddock are not widely sold in Thailand because these Atlantic fish are EXPENSIVE to import. Personally, if locally available, I am willing to pay that high price for the real thing once in a while. Same for the "kho-khun" beef - expensive, but delicious!

Yummy Pizza (Tony) has now determined that the nice fish & chips he's added to his menu is not cod, as listed. Is this correct? So what is it?

What about Monkey Kitchen - is it cod, or is it not? I doubt if it's cod, but who really cares?

Big C Hang Dong is now carrying the dreaded Panga Fish, labeling it as "pla sawai" (ปลาสวาย). The Panga Fish has been discussed extensively in another thread on TV Forum.

    Happy Dining!

It's Pacific Cod processed in China, that's what's on the package, could be horse fish though...lol

Sounds good. We'll check it out soon.

  5. It is highly doubtful that cod or haddock has made their way to Chiang Mai restaurants or supermarkets, but I'll be there when they do!

Other possibilities for fish & chips are Grouper (pla-kao), John Dory, and Ruby Fish or Pomegranate Fish or Red Tilapia (pla thap-thim).

"Dory" (not John Dory) is a catfish commercially farmed in Vietnam. Also known as "Panga" fish.

Let us know what kind of fish Tony at Yummy Pizza has on his menu.

  6. When a Thai national decides to move from one province to another, where does he/she begin the process of transferring to a new household? Is it with the "losing" household or the "gaining" household?

I know that the owner of the "gaining" household must appear in person and sign forms before the new person can be added to that household.

Is there a Thai website which addresses such matters?

    Thanks.

  7. Two months ago, I used a VPN (TunnelBear) to access and set up an account in the (new) My Social Security Account.
I now have more info on my account that I'll ever need!

Haven't tried to access this account without the VPN yet, but will do that soon.

  8. Nice relaxing day today, just opened my email, 90 day report done. coffee1.gif

    Hey Uptheos,

Can you tell us a bit more about your online 90-day report? Are you talking about Assist, or something else? Please don't suggest I read this thread for the answers - 377 posts!! Thanks!

Yes, talking about Assist, I don't think I said I do it on-line.

They scan a copy of the new 90 day report to your email, when it's done.

Thank you, my friend. And for this service from Assist, you pay 1,000 baht, is that right?

I might just stop by and sign up!

  9. That dont make sense mate if the kid was born in thailand to a thai mother then they are already citizens of Thailand

You are correct, DiamondKIng, unless the kids were born during the years when children born to non-Thai fathers and Thai mothers were ineligible (reference Revolutionary Decree 336). In the years that followed, the laws changed. Some of the district offices never got the memo, and I need some legal help.

  10. The sign says opening 18th March. I drive by it everyday but didn't notice the construction. Will have to look closer next time.

    Two things here:

    1. Mae Hia market: More shops, more apartments, less parking. They've just taken away a dozen car parking spaces near the food place. Now isn't that typical? Haven't they just done the same thing at Central Airport Plaza - built a whacking great DiY store in the car park. I guess we won't be wasting our time going there any more: ditto Mae Hia. No parking!!!

    2. Sure Rimping's current shop in Kad Farang will close, but if you look at the large billboard, they're building a larger and better one to replace it. Presumably a seamless operation.

billboard? what billboard? please tell us what you saw at Kat Farang!

A photo of the billboard would be good - so we can all have fun trying to interpret the intentions of the supermarket . . .

  11. I have my iPad for multiple uses - including GPS - but we have a Kindle Fire HD as well and it's a great device for games, books, and videos (screens a bit small for that but the kids don't mind and it's enough for checking out a youtube vid etc): the the pictures brilliant, it's fast enough and if you got a wi-Fi connection surfing the net etc is a breeze. It's got some good features, and there's loads of very good free or cheap apps.

Plus it's really easy to side load content if, hypothetically speaking, someone (not me of course) had downloaded books and movies they wanted to put on it.

Sent from my iPad using ThaiVisa ap

    SteeleJoe,

Is your Kindle Fire HD the 7-inch or 8.9-inch screen? Any problem downloading movies or music from Amazon site from Chiang Mai?

I note that you are also using an iPad. Which one? Which do you like better?

  12. Just spotted a new Italian restaurant under construction on Ratchaphruek Road, opposite Nic's Restaurant.

Reported to be operated by an Italian national. Details to follow.

Ratchaphruek Road is road to Royal Flora & Night Safari, between 121 and 108.
Nic's Restaurant, Coach's Pizza, Lanna Thara housing development, etc.

This new restaurant is small - may be open for lunches only.

  13. The Kindle Fire isn't particularly good at anything, but it's cheap.

    I wouldn't buy a tablet without GPS.

Nexus or Galaxy Tab seems easier and better value for money in Thailand.

    Galaxy Tab wi-fi 7" about 8,000bht

    TommoPhysicist -

Have you seen the brand new KindleFire HD 8.9 ? Read the reviews? $299 in USA.

This is not your grandmother's Kindle Reader - it's the real deal!

    Check it out.

  14. I saw it in Miami and was really tempted to get one ...however as I need to stick to my 1 hand carry policy for my 4 months travel I stick with my itouch 5 and HDMI cable for connections to the hotel TV The specs look great and the color replication for magazines is stunning and HD video content Anyone has a amazon prime account does this work in Thailand for movie streaming ?

I did tried Amazon Prime on Roku ( a media streaming device) and my iphone4S before on True Internet. It worked with some tweaking. Mean I had to use a DNS service to "Fool" Amazon Prime to think that I am at US. That DNS service is called Unblock-us.com

This is the setting you need to do for a Kindle: http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/portal/articles/291583

For those who are unfamiliar with "DNS" -

Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4.

The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.

And for those of us unfamiliar with "VPN" -

    Virtual Private Network ("proxy servers")

    tunnel bear

    vtunnel

    hotspot

    hotshield

    spotflux

    ultrasurf
