  1.  As some one who has managed to reach 70 years old and largely unscathed by any serious illnesses the thought of what lies ahead beyond my cremation ashes seems to be playing on my mind more and more every day  . But after watching this youtube video it got my mind racing , what if I could be cryogenically interned and then as predicted one day in the future scientists will have worked out how to warm my body up and bring me back to life again , then once I’m brought back to life , what ever it was in the past that killed me could by then be cured . Just think of it a sort of rebirth and a new beginning and may be by the time I’m thawed out the scientific advancements could even offer some sort of rejuvenation process as well . So not only would I wake up and be cured of my past medical issues I could also look younger as well. ????

So If an affordable cryogenic process was offered to you , would you happily sign on the dotted line   or would you just let nature take its course and hope for the best. ????

  2. Its soon my daughters birthday and for her birthday gift she has asked for an iPhone.

Personally I don't know much about Apple iPhones ????

She then told me that one of her fellow University friends parents have a mobile phone shop and her friend sells iPhone's from her facebook page and that friend would sell an iPhone to my daughter at a good discount price. When I asked my daughter which iPhone she wanted as her birthday gift my daughter said that her friend can sell her an iPhone 7+ ( iPhone seven Plus ) with a 64GB capacity memory brand new for 11, 500 Baht.

I have looked on line and cannot see any iPhone 7+ 64GB memory models for sale ( only 32GB or 128GB versions ) .

My daughter seems adamant that her university friend is correct and they can sell her an iPhone 7+ 64GB version with the Apple 1 year warranty .

Am I missing some thing , is there an iPhone 7+ 64GB memory model on sale in Thailand

Well Tom, it all sounds positive, & this get may be on the right track. I hope so.

I see Star has been prescribed some Enrofloxcin for a possible skin infection....

Over 5 years ago, I had a rash & a lot of itching down there, went to the doctor many times, given lots of antifungal creams, had a biopsy, and nothing cured it.

Tried Fucidin antibacterial cream, & my symptoms cleared up in a week.

Whatever happens Tom, you will find an answer, I'm sure.

    Fingers crossed. ????

    Hi and thanks

I to have my fingers firmly crossed and will be watching Star for any improvements in her condition , I will of course post any developments along the way .

Did the Calamine help at all?

Hi , I only put some on a small part of her skin just as a test area, and yes it seemed to make here skin look less red and inflamed . I’m going to put some more on other areas now and see how it goes.

Well after doing some online searching I found yet another local vet who seemed to have a good reputation and generally liked . So today we took Star to this 3rd new local vet in the hope that some thing good would come out of the visit.

I took with me a full list of all the drugs / lotions / shampoos that other vets had all ready prescribed in the past . On meeting this new vet I had in my mind to first go over Stars past history and present the new vet with all the past written skin biopsy and blood test results, then wait and see what the new vet would recommend as a course of action.

So there we were standing in front of the 3rd new local vet , again as in the past the vet was female and I would guess in her early twenties. I had already agreed to let my wife do the talking ????, normally in the past from the outset I would do the talking and my wife would some time translate if necessary.

The vet examined Star and with out my prompting said that a skin biopsy needed to be performed , so out came the sharp blade and several areas of Star’s skin were scraped . The vet asked us to wait as she took the skin sample away so she could test it.

20 minuets later the vet returned with the skin scrape biopsy results and told us that there were no parasites evident and no indication of mange . But in her opinion the skin biopsy showed a possible chronic yeast infection ( malassezia species of yeast ).

The vet then said that as Star had now been prescribed ‘’Prednisolone ‘’ and in some dogs the use of that drug could lead to a liver enzyme activities problem. So to make sure that Stars liver does not currently have any problems , a blood test should be carried out there and then, which it was and the in house blood test results came back as all being OK.

The vet prescribed the following drugs -

    1.  Prednisolone ( a steroid to treat inflammation and suppress the immune system – to help Star stop scratching )

    2. Itraconazole ( treat fungal infections of the skin )

    3. Enrofloxacin ( an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections )

    4. Coatex ( a nutrient containing Omega 3 and Omega 6 )

Just thinking back to Stars past vet visits the words ‘’ yeast infection ‘’ was mentioned by the university veterinarian dermatologist doctor and that they had found traces of yeast in the skin biopsy , but said that it was not that serious and no drugs were prescribed to combat a yeast infection.

So now we are going to follow the new vets advice and give Star the two week course of drugs and continue showering her with the recommended pet shampoo ( Dermcare Malaseb shampoo ) and at the same time carry on feeding Star her non chicken / pork diet .

One thing that I noticed after giving Star her first does of Prednisolone was within an hour of taking the drug she had stopped scratching her self , before just watching her scratch her skin until it bled was very distressing .????

Now its a wait and see , but going on past visits to a vet I’m still not that confident about the eventual outcome ????

They cured my dog with once weekly shoots.  She had demodectic mange and she looked very very bad.   I went around in circles for months, went to various vets including the university clinic and spent a lot of money before I found this clinic on the advice of the manager of a large boarding kennel.

Many thanks , my Thai wife is going to give them a call

  6. Thanks guy’s for you helpful advice and comments , although my own personal take on the vets we have taken Star to so far is shall we say less that positive , it seems that the route I should now go is to again cross my fingers and head to another vet ( the University veterinarian dermatologist doctor who we took Star to is out of Thailand for over a month ) .

So I’m going to try and find yet another vet thats not 600km away like the last one. At least this time I can go to another vet armed with the the University veterinarian dermatologist doctor biopsy and blood report ( see screen shots ) .

Thanks amukat , I had some how missed James26 post and I will be now contacting him to apologies for not acknowledging his post .

Just looking at Star laying next to my computer desk with her skin condition and soulful eyes makes me feel sad????

I had 3 retrievers who suffered from Mange.  Real bad I may add.  Took one to a USA trained vet in Chiang Mai who administered  ivermectin injections once a week for eight weeks and it cured the dog of mange.  For the other 2 retrievers I bought liquid injectable Ivermectin and administered  it orally for two months.  This cured the dogs.

Does that mean I could by the injectable Ivermectin liquid in the small bottles and just give it to Star with her food ?

You might want to try having your dog fully dewormed.  I have been reading lately about various worms that can cause skin problems ...hookworms for example, and others.

Also you can use ivermectin orally from a vet, once a month instead of all those expensive products to kill parasites.  It will also act as a dewormer I think for some worms but not every?  I did that for all my dogs, 8 of them, and never had any problems.  It is a very safe drug and very cheap.  Vets don’t always suggest it to farangs.  You use it at higher dosage than for just preventing heartworm ...this is the drug that prevents heartworm in case you don’t know that is in Heartguard.  Then you don’t need to buy that.

Since I left Thailand and stopped that my dogs got some minor skin problems and itchy things also they never once had.  Oh, you can’t treat Collie type breeds, Please look up your particular dog breed before you do it, some dogs can’t take ivermectin ...notice to anyone reading this.  Not you OP.

Thanks , the dewormed thing was never brought up in my conversations with all the 3 vets , so its some thing I must look into right away .

If it is mange then first approach would be  to try ivermectin tabs but a check on safety need be made relative to breed ! The used engine oil trick has been known to kill  mange  mites  but it also  can cause  horrible side effects on an animals skin due to the concentration of contaminants that are quite poisonous..maybe what kills the mange.

Thanks , any idea where I could by the ivermectin tabs from ?

    To Tom, the OP,

I've had some dogs with skin problems and it's terrible to watch them suffer. I did always find a cure in the end, but that was after hours and hours of research, long trips to the vets, and many sleepless nights.

One dog had a skin problem on his tail. Took him to the local vet and the Khon Kaen university animal hospital, but they had no idea.

We live in KhonKaen and they used to have a Thonglor Pet Hospital.  I stopped there and explained my dogs problem. They told me their skin specialist flies up from Bangkok once a month. I made an appointment and took my dog there to see the specialist. He knew instantly what the dog had. The price was 4,000bt for the visit and meds. I thought that was expensive, but didn't care. My dog was going to be ok.

The Tonglor International pet hospital is in Bangkok and they are in Pattaya too, (I see from your profile you're from Pattaya).

Just a suggestion, you may want to take your dog there. I would tell them you want to take your dog when the skin specialist is there.

Your little guy is lucky he has a family who loves him.

    Good Luck,  Z

Thanks for you comments and concern they are much appreciated .

I actually live about 75km out side of Korat and have already been to 2 vets in Korat .

Currently Star has increased her scratching episodes and now some of the areas where she scratches are starting to bleed . Both the past 2 local vets said that if they could not determine the exact cause of Stars skin symptoms , they would then prescribed a drug called APOQUEL to help stop the scratching . I never obtained that drug as both vets commented on how expensive it would be for long term treatment and it was best to try and find out the exact cause of the skin disorder rather than just preventing the scratching. But that never happened . So Star was never prescribed APOQUEL.

Now Star is scratching her self more I am going to try and find a drug ( not from a local Vet ) that would hopefully reduce her scratching episodes and that does not cost the Earth . ( see screen shot  ????

If any one can recommend such a freely available drug I would be most grateful

Oh Tom, I was expecting a happy result when I saw your post. Poor Star, she must be fed up ????

It's just a thought, but is it possible to contact a Vet from your own country & asking him/her for advice? I guess you'd have to stress you're willing to pay a reasonable fee for online advice...

If you think that Star's problems are caused by Sarcoptic Mange, then treat it.

I'm a bit surprised that the Vet didn't give you a mild anaesthetic topical, such as Lignocaine for the itching.

The answer is out there somewhere; I'm sure you'll find it. ????

Myself and Star both thank you for you comment

I was thinking about trying do what you suggest and get in touch with a UK vet some how , even if I have to pay for their advice . But finding such a vet seem’s difficult , but I will keep looking.

Thinking about the whole thing , so far the first 2 local vets did the biopsy on the skin test ( scrape the skin surface with a fine metal blade ) and blood test and said they could not see a cause for the skin symptoms.

The 2 local vets could not come up with an answer as to what Starts skin problem actually is , they only recommended that Star take an antihistamine to help stop the scratching and take drugs to prevent parasites ( even though the biopsy did not confirm that Star had any skin parasites ) .

Like you so aptly say , the answer is out there some where , I was hoping that once an experienced vet actually looked at Stars skin , that with all their past experience they could there and then come to some sort of conclusion . One point that springs to mind is that the past two local vets were both fairly young looking .

    Tom

  12. First a big thank you to every one who posted suggestions and advice

Well eventually we made the long 140 km round trip to see a University veterinarian dermatologist doctor . The vet had a good look at Stars skin did some tests ( Skin biopsy / Blood test ) . Before the test results were ready I asked the vet just looking at Stars skin , what do you think the problem may be? .

The vet said that in their opinion the problem could be a food allergy . When the test results came through the vet said that there was no sign of any Mange or Parasites , but the skin biopsy did show some fungal infection ( but not serious ) .

After receiving the test results the vet recommended that we put Star on a course of special dog food ( Royal Canin – Anallergenic ) a 3kg bag priced at 1,835.00 Baht, and see how Star reacts to only eating that dog food ( we could not give Star any
treats or snacks only the Royal Canin  Anallergenic dog food.

The vet also prescribed the following

    1. Bravecto ( only 1 tablet )
    1. NexGard ( only 2 tablets )
1 box of Clavamox ( to treat bacterial infections )
    1. bottle of Dermcare Malaseb shampoo.

I was given no tablets to stop Star from scratching her self.

I did purchased some Sudocreme cream , but after regularly applying it the skin redness stayed the same .

The total cost of seeing the University veterinarian dermatologist doctor and the drugs came to over 7,000.00 Baht ( excluding the traveling fuel cost and the bag of dog food priced at 1,835.00 Baht .

Well after Star had completed her course of Royal Canin – Anallergenic dog food , she was still showing the exact same skin symptoms , but now she started to scratch her self even more than before .

We have followed the drug dosing regime as the vet told us and regularly shampooed Star with the recommended shampoo .

The Vet told us to go back and see them after Star had completed her course of special dog food , but currently that University veterinarian dermatologist doctor is out of the country for over a month .

I really want to go and see the same Vet , but having to wait over a month taking into consideration that Star’s skin condition has not got any better is not some thing I really want to now do.

This is the Third different vet ( 2 normal local vets and one university veterinarian dermatologist ) that we have taken Star to , and still Star is suffering from the same symptoms , which is making both my self and wife very sad and we are starting to loose faith in veterinarian doctors who in many cases only seem to be interested in prescribing expensive remedies .

Making another possibly expensive long distance trip to see yet another vet is some thing that I wish to avoid if possible , so I’m not really sure of how best to proceed . Any thoughts please ????

I forgot to say - Personally just looking on the internet as far as I can tell Star’s skin symptom looks very much like Sarcoptic Mange , but the vet’s skin biopsy said not !!

As I type this I can see Star scratching away and she looks very unhappy and sad ????

Unfortunately this is one battle I won't win and I know that but I'm looking forward to many years ahead. However, after spending 2 years with my head in my hands thinking 'woe is me' - I decided that I was taking charge, I will control my future for as long as I can, not the b$$tard disease. Yes, there's always something, as you say but there is nothing you can do about it - you're getting older every minute.

What you can do is take charge of the life you have - at the moment your thoughts seem to be that you can't. You need to be in the right mood to do that and there are ways to do that. One of the best things you can do is to exercise. There is a medical reason but I can't remember what it is (age ????) but for some reason, when you take excercise your mental attitude improves.  I realise that when its 36 degrees, the last thing on your mind is exercise but that's where thinking positive comes in. You have to push yourself - its so easy to talk about exercising but never actually do it - you'll do it later right?

Get yourself up early and take some exercise before it gets hot.  Give it a try, believe me, it works.

Take control of your life and try to stop feeling like a victim.

I really don’t know what to say but your positiveness is awe inspiring and certainly makes me think and at the same time puts my own trivial feelings into prospective. I know and admit that my thoughts on many subjects are generally negative ones and I am trying to change that situation.

The exerciser thing is some thing I’m currently looking at and will act on it . One other thought Ive had is this thought , many times I see diet and exercise mentioned both in relation to health issues and several posts here relating to my original ‘’ on the downward slope feeling “” and the advice seems to point to a general consensus of altering your diet and taking up exerciser as being a bonus .

Here’s my thought …. So I change my Diet

There’s a little voice in side my head that keeps whispering this thought . Here you are at 70 years of age and having to sadly deny your self many things in the food and drinks department that you use to really look forward to and made you feel happy,  all in the hope that doing so ‘’ may ‘’ add a few more years to your life span and well being .

So I’m now asking my self is this . At what age remembering that I’m 70 , do I say to my self , look what the F*** are you doing , your 70 years old and you should be enjoying your remaining years , not having to give up and deny the things that make you happy , eat drink and be merry as I may not wake up in the morning .

    Any thoughts  ????

I prefer to look away when passing a mirror, and doing whatever I can to just not think about this ghastly process.  The only thing that provides comfort, when I'm forced to consider it, is the knowledge that when the process of rotting away becomes intolerable, I can take a massive dose of Nembutal and an anti-nausea medication and just end it.

So, please, just tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred.  That's all I ask.

Its funny that you mention not wanting to look at your self in a mirror , I am just the same . When I see my reflection it only increases my ‘’ I’m on the downward slope ‘’ stress ????.

Best advice I can give you is to ignore your age and stay active.  Yes, you'll get aches and pains doing things you used to take in your stride but if you stop doing those things completely, you will go downhill faster.

Sometimes its just down to attitude, I used to say "I can't do that at my age" - but when I really thought about it, why couldn't I? Sometimes we just put obstacles in our way.

Life changed for me 4.5 years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer. Yes, at first it changed for the worse but when I finally took my head out of my %^&* and decided to be positive, everything took a change for the better. And I do mean EVERYTHING. A Macmillan nurse told me that although there was no clinical reason why, the profession generally accepted that a positive attitude can have a positive outcome upon your illness.

She was right and since then I've applied that positivity to all aspects of my life - not just to fighting my illness. Can instead of can't, will instead of won't and do instead of don't.

I'm not as old as you but most guys my age don't do half the things I do. Those in Thailand seem to spend their time drinking beer in bars - a great way to go downhill fast.  I see them at the bar when I go for breakfast - 10am and they're on their second bottle!!! Yes, I enjoy a beer and still get wrecked sometimes but you're just as likely to see me ask for a cup of tea at my local.  I find it quite amusing that those who sneer when I order a tea are either grossly obese or totally unfit. Today I was 20ft up a tree cuuting branches off, I still ride a motorbike (too fast ???? and I also still ride 'other' things ????). Although I'm starting to lose interest a little, I still go clubing - why should things change? I'll continue doing all those things and more until I physically cannot. I won't stop just because it doesn't fit with the stereotype 'older man'.

This will I'm sure, draw a few comments (ones I won't reply to by the way) but I smoke. In no way am I saying that smoking is good for you but in my opinion, alcohol is far worse - mainly because of people's attitude towards it. My grandad, father and uncle were all heavy drinkers and all died from diseases related to alcohol. I've been smoking for over 50 years without a problem.  However, the point I'm making is not that smoking's harmless, for some its very harmful - I'm just lucky. Its just that people knock smoking yet often, the very same people sink gallons of beer each week.

Brushes with ill health are inevitable - I know that very well but staying positive really does help. The grim reaper comes for us all eventually - why waste your time worrying or even thinking about something you can do nothing about? - Live your life.

The   C  word must be one of the worst things to hear and then to try and stay positive after hearing the news for me would certainly be a challenge . The words ‘’ try and stay positive ‘’ seem to be banded about a lot when reading about health issues or on the subject of getting old and the downward slope ,

Personally I do try and stay as positive as I can , but it seems that the daily roller coaster of life keeps trying to derail my efforts . I have a saying that my wife rollers her eyes at every time I use it out aloud , and the older I get the more I seem to say it out aloud nearly every day , when life hits me over the head with its stick , be it a simple thing like the power going off in the house again , or the roof leaking and don’t get me started on noisy neighbors I just automatically say out loud ..........

    There’s always something !!

I wish there was a magic pill I could take that instantly made me have a more positive out look on life ????

Any way , thanks for posting your thoughts and I wish you well in fighting your illness , which I’m sure with you continued positive out look , you will win

But on the odd occasions when I have brought up the subject, her reaction like many times is to say , you think too much . I then reply that us British are born thinkers and forward planners and its some thing I can’t stop doing , its just a genetic curse ????

Some times I wonder what it would have been like to have been born a Thai , where thinking too much and constantly planning ahead and worrying appears not to be part of their normal brain function . My wife also loves to use to use a phrase at the drop of a hat  ( that tends to infuriate me ) and that is ….  My pen rai ????

Tom, given all the positives you state you possess then perhaps your "depression" itself needs some investigation as a possible clinical state?

Thats a good point , I’m fairly sure that my thoughts about getting old and my getting stressed out at the drop of a hat are some what related . I am currently seeking counseling for the problem.   Funnily when I now watch any very old films I keep thinking to my self all these actors are dead and then that thought seems to trigger my thoughts about getting old and dying ????

  19. First a BIG thanks to every one , Ive read all your advice , suggestions and comments.

I am fairly convince that coming to permanently live in Thailand has in some way made me look older than my actual years and certainly added to my I’m getting old and on the downwards slope mind set. I have this funny feeling that if I had stayed back in my home country my over all physical appearance and mental state would have been in a far better condition than it is now here in Thailand .

Just to add I made a big mistake and originally came under the spell of Thailand and all I thought it had to offer , I sold every thing back home that I once owned and burnt all my bridges that would allow me to ever return home ????

So how about you - do you feel that if you had remained back in your home country and not moved to Thailand , that in some way if you had not moved here you would now be in a better state of mind and possibly looking physically better than you do now residing in Thailand .

I have been taking that drug at bed time for a few weeks . After taking the Bestatin when I now wake up in the morning I have a really bad headache and some times feel nauseous , which I never had before taking Bestatin .

I have looked through other similar older topics here on cholesterol lowering drugs , but I’m looking for any up to date information on an alternative for Bestatin . I have also started a new exercise and diet regime that I hope will help my high cholesterol situation.

Any suggestions , comments or advice please .

Blood test results ( taken with out fasting before hand )

    Cholesterol – 244 ( H )
    Triglyceride – 83
    HDL – 54
    LDL – 173.4 ( H )

Be very careful with the lorazepam, it is highly addictive and will also stop working unless you up the dosage

Taken just once or maximum twice a week (and never 2 nights in a row) should be OK though I would suggest 1/2 mg not 1 mg especially if yo uhave spaced out feeling or dizziness in the mnorning

I also strongly suggest you get counselling to deal with your stress and anxiety as they are clouding the physical picture and make it hard to determine what, if any, physical problems you have. Try one of these:

    Thanks Sheryl .

As you suggest I’m going to seek counselling to try and address my stress and anxiety issues , although my sleep test results confirm that I am suffering from sleep apnea . I think my stress and anxiety is either trying to convince me that its my stress and anxiety which is causing my waking up symptoms ,  or Indeed I do suffer from sleep apnea . One other question that I keep thinking about is , the hospitals Pulmonologist doctor who told me my sleep test results prescribed me some Lorazepam to take before I go to bed. If The sleep test results confirmed that I actually was suffering from sleep apnea . Surely the only route would be to use a CPAP machine and mask ( then no need to prescribe Lorazepam )

OP, how's the night without Lorazepam?

    Hi and thanks for asking.

Well last night I went to bed around 11 pm without taking any Lorazepam . I woke up at around 1.15 am , I had no symptoms at all just a feeling of being thirsty. So I had a drink of water and went straight back to bed. I then slept soundly with no interruptions until around 5.30 am when I woke up.

All I can say is that compared to yesterday when I went to bed and took 1 mg of Lorazepam , today I feel a lot better . More alert , energetic and no side effect signs of Lorazepam.

May be there’s small traces of Lorazepam still In my body and that possible residue is still counteracting my past sleep apnea symptoms.  So tonight I will repeat the same routine as last night and not take any Lorazepam before going to bed. Its going to be interesting to see the outcome of again of not taking Lorazepam .
