  1. When the pocket rocket and myself were in Ranong immigration last week, one idiot there was arguing the toss over how much he should pay. He had overstayed by a day and should only pay 20 Baht while they were patiently saying 400 for first day and then 200 after the 2nd day. I think they were saying the first day or 2 is 400B wether you over stay by 1 or 2 days. Fer god's sake he was getting all heated for 200B. If the cells there weren't full of the Burmese illegals he might have been offered one :o

  2. Which visa in peoples opinions is my best option?

The retirement visa or support visa. I meet the financial parameters for both and I am aged 50. I am currently on a 1 year multi entry (4 x 90 days ) the first one runs out Oct 25th.

Secondly am I better using up these current visas or upgrading as soon as possible? This 2 nd question is to address concerns in the law to cut out the eternal visa runners.

    TIA

  3. I'm married to a Thai but so what. It doesn't get you much does it. I mean you can get a 90 visa from the get go extended for one month thereafter but then what?

Being ignorant of your circumstances, I suggest you go to immigration and discuss your options. If you have 400,000 in the bank and can prove you are supporting your wife with money that came from outside Thailand. You should be able to get a support visa for 12 months which is a renewable visa, without involving a border run. Unless these changes cover that this info was given to me at the begging of this month in Ranong Immigration.

However having said that I now find myself considring which is my best option. Doing the above immediatley. Waiting until my "O" type visa expires after the 3 month visa runs, then upgrading to the above. Upgrade now, or go for the old farts retirement visa as I am 50.

With regard to the illegal workers. Last year I was doing the 30 day runs 12 or 13 of them. The number of approaches from the local schools asking me to go teach the kids English I lost count of. The most recent approac was from a local government organisation, to teach adults one night per week.

So if the Thais are serious about stopping the illegal workers, they should look to the source.

    Regards Steve

  4. While back home in the UK my sisters home town is campaigning to stop Tescos building there, Ossett in West Yorks. Although they promised to create about 200 jobs a survey showed it would cost 500 jobs in the area. Do we know what kind of effects these places have on the local small businesses. I don't need large supermarkets for my "farang" stuff. There are at least a couple of family run stores in a small city like Ranong that hold those things.

    Regards Steve

  5. Can someone translate into English please? I'm trying to access www.airlinerlist.com. It has aircraft registrations etc. I use the info to create flighplans for flight simulator by M$, but can now no longer get at the database. TIA

  6. We have just had an election for the Puy Yai (spelling?). The Kamnan who is my wifes brother in law has to retire. Not much electioneering, a couple of posters, and the winner handing out 100 Baht notes. (Actually I'm glad he won the other guys family include the now on the run local hitman.) The electioneering for the Kamnan has just begun, again just 2 candidates. We have the speakers, Radio Ranong, we occaisionlly get that when the Kamnan remembers to turn it on. Otherwise it's just a PA system. The system so far has not been abused, and is just info given out. What you do get, and I don't know if it's the Thai way, is elders from the family saying vote for..... I tell my wife to ignore them and use her head. Which she has done I hope. She disd take the backhander but had told me before that happened her voting intention. You can't have everything I suppose. :o

  7. Flying LHR BKK do a Google search on West East Travel. Any one who pays ANY airlines asking price is nuts. Incidentally flying UK to Thailand my worst ever experience was Lufthansa, both in the air and the Frankfurt airport personnel. I mentioned this to some Germans in BKK. They just laughed, and said what do you expect from Southerners, most Northerners use KLM

  8. I can't get a flight from Ranong up to Bangkok. My wife said last week there was something on the tv newsbar about an aircraft going down. I've done a search in Google but nada. Has anyone heard anything?

  9. Thx guys. Ok given that info and also that I have over 1M Baht in a joint account which I can/will transfer the necessary money to a sole named account. Also given I am now an old fart and have a company pension of at current rates 40,000+ Baht. Is this visa mt best option or the retirement one. Given that permanancy would be ideal but my "teacher" prefers Len Phai to teaching her husband the lingo. :o and I read somewhere that a permanenet residency requires a knowledge of Thai ( is that right ?)

  10. Renewing a British passport in Bangkok takes 14 days, with the new biometric ones,

it used to be 7 days. Either way it is much faster than in the UK where a month

    is not unusual.

Depends on the time of year too. :D Welll if it was a problem over wanting to avoid going "home" a visit to the embassy would be my option. However this was always the intention to go see the family and a little business to attend to.

I tried to call Ranong Immigration, it's also a Fax m/c. They are probably sat there twiddling their thumbs laughing at the Farang trying to call. Or crowding some more of the Burmese they've caught into that tiny lockup. They send them across by boat to Myanmar, and they are usually back inside 24 hours. :o

  11. I have had another thought about this. According to my counting back the 6 month limit is the 7th or 8th of May. If Iwent for another 30 day visa early on the 4th say, would this solve my problem of wanting to stay until early June? My intention is to fly to the UK on June 1st or 2nd.

    Regards Steve

  12. Thanks for the replies. We went to speak with the immigration office in Ranong. I explained my wish to go back to the UK at the beginning of June, and if so would I be ok for 1 more 30 day visa. They said that they had no problem with that. To be on the safe side I think I'll ask my wife to telephone them, when I've explained the situation to her better.

  13. Last time I was up in Bangkok, I saw ads for the visa run stating 3 months left on the passport was enough. I am in Ranong so the Burma run is very easy for me here. This week the officer was very eager to point out my passport expires mid November. So my question is what is the rule, 3 months or 6 months.

    Regards Steve.
