For goodness sakes it's Thailand; you actually think any statistics and numbers provided here are quantifiable and verifiable with any consistency...........come on folks get real......

Sorry but they don't have a handle on how many Farnags are living here in Thailand at any point in time..

Even with all those strict Immigration forms and reporting requirements they still have no dam idea how many Farangs live here.

Tells you a lot about the place and their inabilities to acquire accurate data points for anything!

    Not accurate at all.  http://web.nso.go.th

I actually live in Thailand.  Feel free to ask if you need any other information.

I have often taught my wife math shortcuts. She always marvels at how easy the solution is. She never fails to mention how dim her teachers were in school, and how they never even made an effort to demonstrate the smallest degree of creativity, to get the students to learn the material. No math shortcuts, ever. Just rote learning, taught by people who barely had a handle on the material they were teaching. The educational system here is woefully bad.

Now Thailand is threatening to pull out of the PISA international standards rankings. I can guess why. And it is not he lie this man states in this quote-

Thailand may boycott the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) this August if the test organiser refuses to allow the Education Ministry to proof-read the translated examination papers in advance. Refusing to join would be an unprecedented move. Thailand has taken part in the test since 2000. Education Minister Teerakiat Jareonsetta confirmed he has sent a request to the organiser asking for the proof-reading. "I am aware that examination papers should be kept in secret. However, if the translation quality is poor and not done by linguistic experts, our students may not be able to understand the questions perfectly. If that's the case the test won't reflect their true abilities which is not fair on Thai students," Mr Teerakiat told the media Thursday.

India has re joined in 2019 I believe.  I see no reason why Thailand should pull out.  Just crazy and confirms what everyone was saying about the government. Awful.

Typical set of data from Thailand....raises more questions than it answers. Think to yourself here, the powers that be have this data that they are supposed to analyse...how can you analyse if you don't know what is being measured, how and by whom, over what time period? They then make "policy" with their analysis. And it is not only ex-pats....it's tourists numbers, road deaths, educational attainment , trade figures; you name it, it's the same, hear no accurate data, hear no accurate data, see no accurate data. No wonder the place is such a mess.

The worst is an uneducated Farang.  Read about it and then get back to us.

I had something similar at a local shop.  Bought a few things that totaled 80 baht.  I was impressed that the person added it up without a calculator.  I gave 100 baht, and then they had to get the calculator out to work out the change lol.

Two British studies suggested IQs dropped between 2.5 and 4.3 points per decade after WWII.  In Oslo have studied 730,000 Norwegian men and found their IQs are considerably lower than their fathers at the same age.

The Thais probably used the calculator to make you feel comfortable.  LOL

The only question I have for those with the money in the bank is:

What arrangements have you made if you die tomorrow and the money is sitting in that account?

Most I have spoken to about this say-nothing.

It is something to think about if one cares.

    Will from home country?

    Thai will?

    Documents filed with the bank?

    Few do any of this.

Why would you care unless you are trying to offer some kind of service to those who have money in the bank.  I don't believe your post has even the remotest connection to this topic.

Since this is a thread about immigration policy, a Dr Evil quote is perhaps appropriate:

"Why must I be surrounded by frickin' idiots?"

Just relax.  Who would let an Immigration person upset them?  It'l like expecting a policeman to teach quantum physics.  Not going to happen.  They aren't real bright just let it be.

Good post Khao Yai. But the way things are going is that in a few years, along the line, there will be no farang staying here. Legally. And the official statistics will not be correct. Somewhere along the line the siht (anagram) is gonna hit the fan. What happens then?

All the Farang who were staying here legally using the 800k method or the income method legally will have no problem staying.  Only 70,000 staying here anyway hardly a big number.

Has hardly "stayed about the same" as evidenced by the roller coaster 10 year chart below. It is down overall from where is was 10 years ago by approximately 10%.

It has been reported in the ever inconsistent Amusing Thailand at some IO's that the money need be seasoned for 3 months before...other 2 months.

USD 10 years ago 31 this year 31.  The poster I was responding to said it had dropped 20%.  The pound has dropped in relation to almost all other currencies.

    Possibilities:

    1) Most expats currencies have dropped about 20% in value against the strong baht, meaning it costs them more to live here, and as most are pensioners, there isn't any additional income coming in to top up the difference, thus making it harder for the expat to survive here.

    2) Cost of living is also up

    3) Immigration enforcing the law and making it mandatory for most retired expats to have 800,000 baht in the bank 3 months prior to applying for their extension and keeping half of the money in the bank after a set period, and they cannot touch the other half for 3 months after they applied for your extension, I believe, although they will turn a blind eye if you don't have the money and use an agent and pay them between 15,000 and 25,000 baht for them to take care of everything, i.e. immigration gets a slice of the cake.

    4) Expats feel hard done by with all the changes with immigration rules, more forms, etc, etc.

I suppose the above are just a few possibilities why some expats are leaving, as for tourists, well I believe the string baht and social media may just be the cause ?

In the lasts 10 years the USD has stayed about the same.  I think Americans are the number 1 or 2 largest group of expats.  Immigration is not making it mandatory to have 800K in the bank and not 3 months before.  I'd suggest further study before you post.

    So why are you here?

Got bored with all the magnificent scenery and posh lifestyle in North America and Europe.  Of all of the women in the world - yes I have tried them all even Eskimos and African tribal Princesses, Thai women smell the best.  Maybe not the prettiest or the smartest or nicest but the best smelling.  Plus I've never been bored.  In 20 years never bored one day.  Thais are fun to watch.  It is like a constant movie.

  11. I traveled all over Vietnam by helicopter and small slow aircraft.  Saw a lot.  None of which was impressive to my 22 year old American experience.  Lot of red mud.  At that age, Thailand women and Vietnam red mud.  I lived in the Rockies and San Fran and Seattle all before I got to SEA.  What was I going to be impressed by?  I was very glad to get back to America then.  Why would a young American be impressed by anything in South East Asia?  Now as an old guy I ooh and aah at the temples and quaint rituals and archaic methods of governing --  ha ha ha.

I was refused for retirement extension because my original TM30 (filed by my apartment) had been overwritten by an overnight in a Thai hotel, which came up on the computer at CW.

I'm asking the general question on behalf of my building staff -- they have no way of even knowing if a resident has left for a few days, so wouldn't ordinarily re-file.

And yes, we know it's always safest to re-file, but I'm trying to nail down exactly when it's necessary.

So what happened?  Filled out and then got your extension?  How long did the extra work take?

According to a survey, most Americans don't have $500 they could pay in an emergency.

Why you (or anyone else) would think we all have a spare $25,000 to park in a Thai bank is beyond me.

The average American household has $175,510 in savings as of June 2018.

I will do you one better, i offered the guy 2000 bt to fast track the order. He showed up alone as his employees were busy in the workshop and I helped with assembling the machine (got here in parts) and he when I wanted to pay the 2000 bt said I cant take your money you helped me so much assembling. (guy spoke perfect English and years before i bought something else with him i recommend gymware to everyone he is not the fastest as he is real busy but good)

Shop was not that big, what I am defending is that most Thais get it right and yes it goes wrong but there is a group who looks at everything negatively and like you already said i should be worried before there was reason for. With an attitude like that im sure you encounter more problems then I do.

The Thai way of guarantees is bad that is one thing for sure you wont have me defending that. But many many it a Thai screws the farang thing while its often just the way it is in this country nothing racial about it. Other example.. i bought a nas drive 30+ k baht and it failed... took me quite some time to get a replacement over a month. I got a new one but it was frustrating especially as it was a well known QNAP american brand. I found it stupid that they did not have more units in storage and swap it. I did not like it but did not ook at it at me getting screwed over. Just at stupid policies here about guarantees.

I don't see these things as Thais wanting to rip someone of just as lack of consumer protection. I have accepted that things are different as in my country. That is why i buy from certain IT shops where i know i can exchange things.

About your robot vacuum cleaner.. was it any good been thinking of one too with gf moving out.

(just for the non native English speaker difference between warantee and guarantee)

I've got the two above. I use the robot when the dogs been in the house.

I find no problems with Thai consumer stuff.  They treat me better than they treat Thai people.

It would be better if my Thai was better as they seem to really like it when I can speak to them in Thai.

Yes, I was one of them, 2 years straight back to back TR 2008 to 2010, I had a boyfriend in Pattaya, and I stayed here because at 34 there was no other option to stay here legally. Since then I just stay winters, retired, lazy Westerner, in Thailand to escape Europe winters.

I pity guys like me who are in Thailand today. They squeezed us out. And for what? What did we do!? What is the end game of current rulers, block everything Western? I sincerely do not get it, the only explanation is raging xenophobia w good dose of lack of education.

80k Chinese moved to Cambodia and many to Laos - they don't want Chinese expats to move to Thailand en masse.  It's not hard to figure.  Chinese and Indian middle class young are getting enough cash to invade Thailand and Immigration wants to make it impossible for them.
