"to serve growing crowds of Chinese tourists and investors"
Really! I read only the other day that 430,000 Chinese had left Cambodia due to the new ban on on-line gambling, the main reason for Chinese tourists and investors. Two more photos posted on my Facebook page from Cambodian friends:-

There's a lot more to Siem Reap than the .50 beers. There is a growing expat community here that is setting roots in the ground from new restaurants, to several other kinds of business. It's not just a town for tourism anymore. I recommend anyone come here whose interested in opportunities that Thailand doesn't offer.
I shall be in two months time, renting a fully furnished apartment in Siem Reap, after nearly 20 years of retirement in the North of Thailand. So simple and easy without the bureaucratic stupidity and complications emanating from Bangkok!!

Paper loves water and it soaks up to pulp. So what is in the straw that makes it not to pulp?
Plastic?
I think the paper is waxed to prevent the absorption of water.

From the way I'm reading it, I can't see any mention of the high speed railway to China.
Has this died a death now? It's supposed to be up and running between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima by 2021.

"bring their own cups to purchase our beverages"
Unbelievable - do they honestly think this will happen on a regular basis and will Starbuck's provide a washing area where customers can clean their cups after use!! Personally, I never drink their coffee as it is too expensive!

And 60 to the pound I’ll be happy too
When I first retired to Thailand almost 20 years ago it was 80 baht to 1GBP! Many of us retirees were "Baht millionaires" based on pension income, but not nowadays.

Because of mosquitoes.
Yes indeed, my reason as well (also for biting flies, spiders, wasps and bees). I always wear long trousers/jeans when I go out, especially around dusk when the "mossies" are at their worst! I only wear shorts in the house.

I have just returned from my local Tesco in a rural Issan town and this is what I experienced. As expected, no single use plastic carrier bags, not even an alternative to purchase! Whilst shopping around the store I noticed many rolls of single use plastic bags conveniently placed around the fresh food area into which many customers were placing their selection of produce (vegetables, fruit, meat or fish). In the bakery section, all the stacks of sliced ordinary and wholewheat loaves were packed in single use plastic bags. As I see it, this is a ban only on carrier bags from the check-out. For the first time ever, and not of my making, at check-out the situation for me became crazy. Like many other customers, I had my purchases stacked in a trolley and as I removed them for bar-coding the storage counter on the other side of the till (where the plastic bags used to hang) became stacked and blocked. The lady assistant stopped bar-coding whilst I unloaded the rest of my purchases. I then had to wheel my trolley to the other side of the till for re-stocking so as to allow more space to continue bar-coding my remaining purchases. I was not the only customer experiencing this time consuming process and there were long queues.
On my way home I noticed several of these in the rural villages:-

Illegal...
And since when has police or a gov official walked round an Isaan market looking for naughty stuff..????....????
Never, and never will!! If illegal, why do Buddhist temples (certainly here in Issan) ignite 9 fireworks into the sky which explode to scare off evil spirits before the pyre is ignited??
-
Very commendable but will it be fully implemented? Last night on my way home from Tourist Police duties in Issan, I stopped to purchase a sandwich and lemon tea at a busy 7-11 shop in a PTT station at 02:30 hours today (1st January). Still plenty of single use plastic bags and straws being used and available at all the check-outs!!

OH REALLY!!
Plenty on sale in our local "Walking Street" market here in rural Issan for families to enjoy the start of 2020 (2563).
RIP fellow Brit but trying to ignite such a horrendous looking monster for a third time - oh dear!!
