I was there 20 years ago, not been back since but even then put Pattaya to shame in terms of quality buildings and bars as you say.  Not  the typical cheap tacky rubbish fitted out for the least price you find generally in Thailand.  However having said that the Thai ladies make up for it IMO.

Hi - I usually start to feel the same.

Then I consider that, if your friend is anything like an average Thai, would she be corrupt just like so many other Thais if she had the opportunity?

I think the answer to that question says much.

Unfortunately when the Thai social and education systems brainwash Thais from birth it is thus considered normal to kowtow to those above that say they are better than you and when an opportunity does arise by some chance for to better yourself then it is felt to be the dutiful thing to cheat  on those you have risen above. Its Thai culture these days unfortunately, for many of the population.

Will be interesting to hear the real reason for him beinf pulled up. Call me cynical if you will be there is ni chance he has been fingered because of undisclosed wealth. He must be suspected of or done something wrong. Perhaps links found to anti Government side.. will be good knowing the full story if ever.

Or maybe he had threatened to expose others with billions of baht stolen from the country.

They never get any safety training? Worked in a chlorine factory during my student years, the first thing they taught us was to never provide assistance to anyone without wearing a gas mask.

The first guy to die had an excuse, the three next ones died as idiots. R.I.P

Lets be fair. Given lax training and education they may not have been idiots, rather uneducated and hence unaware of the dangers and precautions necessary. The real idiots are the hiso Thais or hiso wannabes that think sufficient training of labourers is not justified due to the fact they consider them as members of the lower classes. And there are a few of those on TVF unfortunately.

While a Thai life only has a value of 100,000 baht. So if you do the math it is cheaper to keep the unsafe vans and pay out the compensation after deaths. The policy (now voluntary) was sound and reasonable. There is little to no hope of Thailand ever reducing the number of traffic related deaths and injuries, if the government repeatedly repeals or neuters sensible laws. There will be very few transport operators who will now purchase safer new microbuses, but I bet there will be quite a few new Mercedes sold to high ranking officials.

Most Thai high ranking officials won't need to buy their new Mercedes, they will get them as "gifts"

The number of malls now in Bangkok is not only unbelievable and downright strange is almost like a disease that is consuming the city......And they just keep building more and more and more...

For a city that is sinking it appears short sighted given this quote from the Asian Correspondant ;  "The latest estimates suggest that Bangkok is now sinking as fast as 2cm per year in parts of the city. In fact, The Global Post reported that by 2100, Bangkok would be fully submerged and unliveable"

That is a mere 81 years to go or possibly less with the predicted increases in sea level rises.
