New affordable EVs at the Nov 2024 Bangkok Motor Show
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Well you have the different measuring standards NEDC, CLTC, WLTP and EPA. The best mileage you get with city trips, and worst with a full loaded car and only motorway speeds with headwind. Efficiency on the motorway is what matters, so a sedan shaped cars like Tesla / Xpeng will have better efficiency than a boxy SUV like KIA EVx. And on top of that your AC and battery cooling during driving, as the higher speed you drive, the more battery cooling is also needed. Fortunately most modern EVs have an efficient heatpump. I'm more concerned with extra battery/range degradation in a hot climate like Thailand. Note that new batteries are kept in a conditioned room of 25C. Even parking a car under a roof ambient temperature right now during the day can reach 36-40C. Will you want to keep your battery at 80-100% SOC on those hot days, or will you plan it and charge up before you have your trip? -

Between 1 - 1.1M for plugin or extended range BEV for at least 400 km WLTP. Prefer plugin for the convenience on long road trips. Agree with LFP chemistry. Fortunately you can choose different qualities at the moment, which varies in charge/discharge rate nC, number of charge cycles, energy density, battery cooling method and specific measures to prevent thermal runaway. Here is my list: 1) Geely Aegis. In the EX5. And some Zeekr models. Has 3,500 cycles, 192 Wh/kg, 2.45C on average 2) CATL Shenxing and Shenxing Plus. Some Neta models have them 3) BYD Gen 2 blade. I read on the Australian BYD website that the Sealion 6 has the "new" blade battery. I don't know if it means Gen 2. I'm afraid all Thai cars right now have Gen 1. 4) BYD Gen 1. I prefer to avoid this for now. Advantage of a BYD car is that they have a lot of wiggle room to lower battery prices, and still earn a profit, as they are the second biggest producer. -

Still a lot of money. But much cheaper than a new Atto 3 standard range battery which cost around 320k without installation. The price went down from 525k this year. -

MG4 is already on the market at the moment. But I expect the new MG ES5 at the show. I see that the tech and interior has been updated. Personally I am not a fan of MG. They still sell old models of the MG plugins. Already surpassed by BYD. What I do like is that their batteries are modular, so in theory cheaper to repair, if this service is available in Thailand, contrary to BYD batteries. Also scheduled maintenance cost is in line with cheaper EV maintenance, half the price of BYD's. -

The Geely Aegis battery is also called he Golden battery. Sources: https://carnewschina.com/2024/06/28/geelys-aegis-short-blade-lfp-battery-full-details-including-extreme-safety/ Most of my online research is with ChatGPT and perplexity.ai. And then looking at the sources that these AI tools are providing. Note that BYD is very good in marketing but unfortunately could not find the safety tests that BYD has done with Gen 1 blade battery, except for the famous needle penetration test. Gen 2 blade battery has also been announced, but here again no detailed safety reports found yet. Other issues that the Gen 1 blade battery has: 1) suboptimal cooling, meaning that during charging the capacity can be limited if certain high temps reached. Gen 2 seems to have improved it. 2) plastic cover which can be chewed by rodents nesting on top of the Atto 3 or Dolphin battery. The cover cannot be ordered as a separate item. Therefore aftermarket solutions like a rat guard to prevent them to build a nest. -
I am in for a new affordable plugin hybrid or EV. I am not satisfied yet with the cars available in the market right now. Therefore I was following the new announcements and launches in the 4th quarter this year. In Nov-Dec there will be a Bangkok Motor Show again. These are the cars I will be looking forward to: BYD Atto 3 competitors 1) Geely Galaxy EX5. On paper in many aspects a better car, and most importantly a safer battery that charges faster and has a higher energy density. Unfortunately Geely will have their EVs produced in Malaysia [Proton] and the Thai distributor [Thonburi Panich Group] does not have so many dealers across the country. 2) GAC Aion V A longer car than the Aion Y Plus. Curious how the quality level is. Unfortunately GAC is a small manufacturer compared to Geely or BYD. 3) Changan Deepal S05 A smaller brother of the S07. Has not been announced yet that this car will at the show. Is lik the EX5 a big hit in China at the moment. 4) Xpeng Mona M03 It would be a pleasant surprise if Xpeng will show this budget car at the show. High efficiency, big boot space for a liftback. And excellent software [no 3 after Tesla and Nio]. Don't expect it to be launched in Thailand soon, as Xpeng cannot produce enough for the Chinese market. Bigger SUVs 1) BYD Sealion 7. The EV equivalent of the Sealion 6 PHEV. Will the price be between Sealion 6 and Seal? 2) Geely Galaxy L7 The PHEV competitor of the Sealion 6. Unfortunately not confirmed that it will be at the show. 3) Neta L [BEV or extended range] This is a longer version of the Neta X with luxury items like a fridge and massage for the front passenger. Unfortunately Hozon Auto, the manufacturer sells less cars in China and they are in urgent need of cash injections. 4) Leapmotor C10 [Stellantis] Will be launched in Thailand. Has high ratings in China. Not on my top list. Pickups 1) Geely Riddara RD6 [BEV] Already announced last month. Lower priced compared to BYD Shark in Malaysia. 2) BYD Shark PHEV Will it be announced in Thailand? Much larger and more luxurious pickup than Geely's.

If they require all [foreigner] tax residents to file a tax return according to the article: Then they need to change the definition of assessable income and with it the requirement to file a tax return. The law should not distinguish between foreigner and Thai citizen, only whether you're a tax resident. To my understanding, you are required to file a tax return, only if you have assessable income above certain thresholds. And there are certain remitted income that are not classified as assessable, e.g.: 1) savings before 1 Jan 2024 2) sold investments with a proven loss, so only the principal part of the investment is remitted 3) income that according to DTA is only taxable in the source country

DIY solar system - how to sell electricity to PEA
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Alternative/Renewable Energy Forum
Finally 2 weeks ago the accountant and a few PEA Prachuap technicians visited us. Changed the meter and contract has been signed. About the bill: 1) accountant will send the bill on a monthly basis to us. Can also be viewed with PEA Smart app 2) if it is a credit bill, each of them must be signed at the PEA office to collect the money. You don't need to come each month, but every monthly credit bill must be signed. She will check if a collated bill can be produced by the system. To my surprise, just today, the 1st of the month, we got a visit from a PEA pickup with 3 employees. They came to collect the meter values. It has a lot of values. Nope, the meter does not have a sim. The accountant is responsible to make up the bill on a monthly basis, after all meter values of electricity sellers in the district have been collected. -
BYD Sealion 6 DM-i - is it worth buying it to replace an ICE car?
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
thanks for sharing. yes i will plan a test drive. the car is much bigger than my mazda, however the boot space is a tiny bit larger. i entered a demo car that had a long trip on a very hot day. i sat in the back and i could feel the heat permeating through the cover of the glass roof. the back ac outlets could not cool my head, only the front middle ac outlets. i had to increase the ac volume to feel the ac working -
BYD Sealion 6 DM-i - is it worth buying it to replace an ICE car?
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
i agree with you on only maintenance costs, that for phev it’s higher than bev and ice. i owned for 5 years one of the first phev’s - the chevy volt subsidized by obama i. the ice engine can work as range extender and in parallel. most of my commute i use ev mode and i charge 2 times a day. after 5 years battery health was 88%. btw the maintenance costs of my volt was lower than my previous ice car and this is due to the quality of the car. only complaint i had is the noise when soc battery is low and the ice must do the heavy lifting on its own. that’s why byd like to keep the soc 20-30% so you can drive quietly in hev mode and the ice engine works primarily to charge the battery. byd seems to do a great job in canceling the ice noise in range extender mode. if you drive faster than 110 the ice charger cannot keep up with the battery drain, so then the ice needs to do the job on its own in the end. with a bev you don’t have these speed limitations, on the other hand the legal max speed is 90km on most roads here in thailand. i prefer speed limitations over bev limitations and frustrations. with regards to 30-45 min dc charging vs 10 min fueling, where you have to plan your trips on the availability of 125kw dc chargers. suppose you wanna tour around for several weeks on koh lanta or koh samui where no dc charger is to be found. how about the charger app low response times during rush hours in the weekends and downtime of some remote chargers due to mediocre maintenance -
I am considering buying the BYD Sealion 6 PHEV to replace my 8 yr old Mazda 3. This car is also known as Song Plus [China] or Seal U DM-i [Europe]. Would like to hear your own experience or additional knowledge you gained from other sources to improve my decision making. Reasons to consider the BYD is the 80km [considering to keep 25% SoC for HEV fuel efficiency] pure EV range for daily/weekly city trip. I have excess solar power and can charge at home with a portable charger, as my daily commute is less than 50 km. For longer weekend/vacation trips I will not have range or charging station anxiety, having a 60L fuel tank and around 25km/L fuel efficiency as long as I drive below 110 km/hr and keep the battery charged above 25%. My yearly mileage is around 7-10,000 km. The price vs value is the biggest attraction. The 2-wheel drive model Dynamic is sold for 939,900 Thai baht. Other Chinese manufacturers e.g. MG have lowered their PHEV prices accordingly, however the value proposition of BYD is better. I am intending to keep the BYD as long as I can, for at least 5-6 years. What are the unknowns right now for me: maintenance costs. I read on a Australian site cost of around 200 USD / year over the first 5 years. The ATTO 3 BEV maintainance package of Rever of 8 years is worth 120 USD per year. I assume maintenance for a PHEV is more expensive than a BEV. Next month I'll hear from BYD. insurance costs. I read that EV insurance in Thailand is twice as expensive compared to ICE cars how many years software and security updates are warrantied? BYD has many models/variations worldwide to keep up to date. Will BYD behave like Samsung for smartphones or more like Apple in terms of software updates? Will the car management firmware still work after 8 years, except that [security] bugs will not be solved. after 8 years or 160,000 km battery warranty of 70% battery health, the car will have lower pure EV range. I assume it should keep it's fuel efficiency as a hybrid, as long as the SoC is above 25%? So the PHEV becomes more or less a HEV, after gradual deterioration of the battery. the resale value/depreciation after 5-6 years. I'd guess nobody can answer this, except within China. As the Song Plus is already in the market for several years. The DM-i hybrid technology is on it's 4th iteration, and the 5th iteration has recently been launched in China regaining it's ICE power efficiency crown of 46% from Geely [Seal 7 DM-i] Things in the news or online reviews that have bothered me: on durability: e.g. mold found in the interiors of stored cars in Europe, exterior paint peeling off. Are these issues included in the car warranty? on suspension level: too soft I read. I will need to adapt from the sporty and direct steering nature of the Mazda. I also read reviews that after changing tires and suspension the BYD's suspension behaves better. I also read of motion sickness of some passengers in the back due to the soft suspension. Fortunately in Thailand the max legal speed is 90 km/h and 120 km/h on toll roads. I will need to test drive this on the highway to find out myself.

DIY solar system - how to sell electricity to PEA
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Alternative/Renewable Energy Forum
On 30 Nov we signed the contract at PEA Phetchaburi. After more than 270 days that they said that fulfillment of the contract will be done, finally PEA Phetchaburi came to inspect the system. Within 1 hour they finished the inspection. Everything is OK. Next and last step is a visit next month by an accountant of PEA Prachuap Khiri Khan to sign the selling agreement. On the same day the meter will also be changed. A friend who is from PEA Pranburi explained us the new situation with the bill: 1) the current A6-ish size bill will be replaced by an A4 size bill. It contains kwh used and kwh produced amounts. Also the debit/credit amounts. This bill is prepared and printed out at the office and will be delivered monthly to our mailbox. No mobile printout anymore by the delivery man at the gate. 2) if there is a credit amount, this can be collected at the PEA office or using the PEA smart app. I assume some authorisation is necessary to enable promptpay payment by the bank 3) credit amount does not need to be collected every month. If not collected it will accumulate to the next month. -
I doubt that banks report withholding tax on an individual level, as they don't have the tax id's of the account holders in most of the cases. Up till now, Thai banks do not require a tax id to open a bank account. I read somewhere that some banks started to require a tax id to open a bank account. If you want a refund from TRD for the withholding tax, you are required to register your tax id on the bank account where your refund will be transfered to.

i want to share this video with you. The question and answer starting at 1.52.30 is telling. The American advisor having offices in SE Asia said that it can take years before Thai RD have put in place the working procedures in place to make it happen. Earlier in this video he told that his Bangkok office is discussing with Thai RD about one tax credit case for a client for 15 months and the case is still not resolved. On the other hand in his answer he said that the clearest regulations are the double tax treaties, because Thai RD have to adhere to these. Can you imagine - 15 months about a tax credit from a DTA, which is supposed to be the clearest regulation.

Any feedback on my current tax filing strategy at the moment is welcome. About how I see it at the moment: - still 5-6 months till end 2024, and no real new and practical direction from Thai RD or from this forum gained - my income are director fees, no pension yet, and capital gains on property in home country. According to my tax treaty, no tax credits allowed for these income, but tax exemptions yes. This is confirmed by Dutch tax consultants. - in April I gauged my local RD office incl the lawyer at that office. They wrongly advice me to apply tax credits for my income and that I cannot apply tax exemption according to my Dutch tax treaty - I wrote an email to the lawyers dept of Thai RD in Bangkok to ask for clarifications, no answer. - Dutch RD will not deliver a tax certificate, as Thai RD asked in their English online leaflet. It is not part of their service. Around Q3 2025 a final tax assessment report will be provided on tax year 2024. - i asked 4 tax consultants on tax filing of tax exempted income. One gave a clear yes that they can file tax for me without paying tax. A second one needs to talk to RD officer, before it can commit. Both hover around 30k fee. My current tax filing strategy. This is a moving target as new info comes: - I'll stay tax resident and not escape the 180 day rule, as paying tax consultant is cheaper and more convenient. PS. capital gains on property is not yet taxed in my home country - the first few years I'll file tax the easy stuff by myself: pre-2024 savings and income. Advantage is I have pre-2024 records at hand, due to the lag of reporting by Dutch RD - if ww income is not yet introduced, I'll hire a tax consultant to file tax wrt to tax exempted income. The more remitted, the cheaper the fee per baht remitted

DIY solar system - how to sell electricity to PEA

@sathornlover well, never a boring time in Thailand ;). May I ask which PEA province this is? When we visited the PEA desk to ask about how the billing and crediting would occur, they said we had a choice of 2 [debit & credit separately] or 1 aggregated monthly bill. Have you checked the PEA smart app? There you can see your monthly bills. I don't know if they will report credit bills as well. -

SIM router with weak RSRP signal - where to buy antenna to fix this?
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
thanks for the links. If they advertise 25-28dbi gain and a 4.9 review then you wonder. Band 40 is 2300 Mhz is what I need. Also out of range of these antenna's. -
SIM router with weak RSRP signal - where to buy antenna to fix this?
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Any links you can share with me? I built my own from readily available components on internet, Aliexpress and Shopee: 1) the router - a Raspberry Pi4B initially, 8 months ago I moved to a miniPC with N100 cpu. More capable with fan, power adapter included and more ports than a Pi 5. Overkill at the moment, but the box is more quiet and looks nicer than the Pi. 2) router software - Openwrt 23.5 with LTE modules added like signal info, LTE failover, internet detector and to remove LTE buffer bloat 3) the LTE modem is a Fibocom L850-GL card, which I inserted in a usb adapter card within a black box and 2 antenna's. This modem achieves the 3 CA's if the signal reception is excellent. I also bought the more powerful L860 with 4 antenna's, however with speeds below 100mbps and no line of sight I put it on a shelf somewhere. I'll use it when I move to BKK or Chiang Mai. -
I use a SIM router for my internet at home. First I used DTAC at band 1. Since last year I use NT mobile at band 40. I live in a rural area. Between the cell tower and my house is about 500 meters. The signal is obstructed by a few houses and more by coconut trees. Both DTAC and NT mobile use the same cell tower. Difference is only the band - DTAC on 1 vs NT on 40. I use a LTE modem with 2 stick antenna's which hang against the window. There is no line of sight. With DTAC on band 1 I never had connectivity issues. DTAC provides me consistently between 5-15 mbps. The contract is maxed at 15 Mbps. While with NT I have a few times per month signal issues. The RSPR then is between -120 to -110db. Intermittently the modem tells me I lose connection. The overall strenght is below 40%. On good days the overall strenght is above 60%. Then I get on band 40 3 CA aggregations with speeds of around 50 mbps. After the takeover by True of DTAC the 1 year internet sims increased by price dramatically. NT mobile is the only provider that keeps its price below 1,000B. I have configured my router in failover mode with my phone connected by usb to the router, in case such a bad day happen. Most of the antenna's advertised in Shopee/Lazada is crap. On youtube I see a British guy making his own LTE biquad antenna which can be finetuned on the band frequency. I'm not that skilled. I wonder if someone can advice me a good antenna I can buy that can solve this issue.

DIY solar system - how to sell electricity to PEA
4myr replied to 4myr's topic in Alternative/Renewable Energy Forum
well well after more than 6 months signing of the contract at PEA Phetchaburi my gf got a call from the head of that department that we can start to sign another document. This document contains pictures of my solar system. The guy that is helping us came by with a drone to make a picture of the panels. he came with an rcbo breaker that i need to replace. it seemed that the requirements have changed as 9 months ago when he inspected the situation was ok. i had to ask a chaang climb up the roof to make pictures of the label on the back of the panel. so the document with pictures have been sent back to phetchaburi. no queue anymore to process. they will compare the pictures with the specs stated in the contract. if no issues we’ll get a call from the same team to inspect and test. they will not look into the grounding rod BTW my neighbor who had his 5kw system installed by a company in Ayuthaya, finally the company did not help him to sell to PEA as promised and included in the installation. The company should know. He has 10 panels of 550Wp which is above the requirements of max 5kWp, so any request to sell would have been rejected. -
so i’ve asked 3 tax consultants on a quote to help me do a tax filing on tax exempted income according to the DTA. One referred me to their paid consultancy service without even looking briefly into the case. One said to come back end of this year when they expect RD will come with an updated PD90 form. They expect that this form will be provided with fill in details regarding tax credits and tax exemptions. Hmm.. The third one was more realistic at least to me. Needs to speak coming months with RD on their interpretation of tax treaties related to his customers’ cases. Then he can base his tax filing assessments. He confirmed my worries eg RD have their own interpretations of tax treaties, appeals wrt treaties are a waste of time
