  1. I probably should've made myself more clear in the original post that I'm not referring to some expat family enclave next to a private school for their offspring. Rather, I'm curious to know if there's an actual Thai community (or Thai-Chinese, Thai-Viet community) that somewhat resembles the description in the original post. One earlier poster said something about the haves and have-nots tending to live in proximity because there are comparatively less zoning regulations than in most western countries. That was intriguing to hear.
  2. I don't feel so strongly in either direction. Am simply curious as to whether such places exist in Thailand.
  3. The assumption is incorrect. maybe it is
  4. fluency: able to watch an English-language news program and understand most of it proficiency: able to speak English at a level exceeding that of a typical farang in Thailand
  5. The assumption is incorrect. The first issue is to define the terms proficiency and fluent. In the clinical profession many Thai words already exist and do not require an English transliteration. Prominent research publications tend to appear in English. That's a very different matter from whether or not terms in a specific field require English transliteration.
  6. I don't know for sure. But I would assume an advanced degree professional in a world-class city like Bangkok would have some English proficiency. Also, someone like a clinical psychologist would likely have significant experience with research articles and other such materials that often appear exclusively in English.
  7. A number of my inlaws are former grade school teachers. They don't speak any English (not that there's anything wrong with that!). I do wonder, though, if it's possible at this point for Thai university instructors, lawyers, docs, etc., to have basically no English proficiency. I would expect, of course, for a clinical psychologist in Bangkok or a urologist in Pattaya to be fluent. But what about a general practitioner deep in water buffalo country? Is someone like that also overwhelmingly likely to have significant English speaking proficiency and literacy?
  8. In my homeland, there are suburbs, sometimes entire small cities, where the kids get standardized test tutors and play the clarinet, the moms all do yoga and read book reviews, the dads have massive stock options but almost zero cash money on hand. Does Thailand have these upper-middle-class places anywhere? I'm not talking about a street or two of McMansions but, rather, a place sizable enough to have a local public high school with a nationally ranked debate team. So far, the closest I've seen to this is in the city of Lampang.
  9. I feel like, in this sentence, the words "family" and "overstay" are interchangeable.
  10. I tried installing this and actually think I might've succeeded. I feel like a tech wizard. So, from now on, if I have to open a link about which I'm less than 100% confident, I just launch a web session from the "Sandboxed Web Browser" desktop icon and then plug in the link?
  11. I'm often placed in a position where I'm compelled to open links to PDFs. Does opening such links in a "New Incognito window" provide any layer of protection against something malicious that might lurk within the PDF?
  12. Sounds like my kind of strategy.
  13. renting an apartment for a month. water drips from shower. i don't particularly care, except for the possibililty of a big water bill. from what i can tell, it's probably enough water drip to fill three or four laundry bowls (like the kind thai grandmothers use to wash clothes) over a 24hr period. how much of an extra bill for the month do you think this will be?
  14. Sounds excellent, but it seems all these venues are in or right near Bangkok. I wish I'd posted about this matter a week ago. I was briefly in BKK for the first time in years. Would gladly have made a visit to Panasonic.
  15. Well, in a way that sounds comforting, as it suggests the connecting wire next to the hinge is durable. I still hesitate to mess with the hinge.
  16. you assume correctly
  17. I've attached a few pix If someone can describe this issue more precisely than my subject line, I'm all ears. From what I can tell, this matter has made no impact on my laptop's "brains." But it's now impossible to fold my laptop, shove it into my backpack, and escape my wife for a few days. I also fear that, at some point in the near future, the wire connecting body to monitor will sever, thus rendering the laptop unusable. I suspect some of you could resolve this issue with a few common tools and a 50-baht trip to Mr. DIY. But I'm useless at fixing things. Could I reasonably expect to go to an IT center and find someone to rectify this issue for less than 1,000 Baht, same-day service? In case it makes a difference, my laptop is a Windows 7 Lenovo. I love my Lenovo. I just want to fix her hinge.
  18. This helped me identify some more old gibberish to delete. Excellent.
  19. I go to old videos, delete them, then empty the trash bin. Not very scientific. But it works, for now.
  20. I dunno yet. Hopefully, I can ascertain.
  21. Are you sure it supports Windows 7 ? It seems to say it won't run on my computer.
  22. I don't download anything of considerable size. And yet the C drive keeps filling up. Why? I have a Windows 7 laptop. I don't want to upgrade. My dear Lenovo has been wonderful, and I still believe she has much more to give. I just want to understand why her C drive keeps filling up, and what I can do to remedy this matter.
  23. Oh... I just noticed you already said that. The black background obfuscated my view ????
  24. This website has led me to ascertain the exact taxonomy: Euploea core godartii
  25. after tending to my yard, i sat down to take a break. i then noticed this critter ( pic attached ) on my leg. quickly, i flicked it away. what is this thing? it looks cool, especially the undercarriage, which is full of sticky suction-cup thingies. can this thing cause pain? is it poisonous?
