  1. I have a similar Canon and have been very happy with it. It has video capability and an optical viewfinder that the Lumix doesn't, as well as more scene modes. The downside is that the zoom is only 4x. I'm not familiar with Singapore pricing though, I'd find a Panasonic dealer and compare prices. Expect the Canon to be about 20% more. From there it depends on what you feel gives you what you really want.

    Hi cdnvic,

I am attract by canon promotion which they give 1 gb memory card free. I like the panasonic lumix you recommend to me and i find the body of panasonic is extremely attractive to me comparable to Canon A 540.

  2. Anything from Canon, Nikon, Fijifilm, Kodak, or Panasonic will be good quality. The prices will vary depending on alot of factors so shop around and keep a few things in mind;

5 megapixels will print out sharp 8x10 size prints. Anything below is actually out of date.

Digital zoom means nothing (it's just cropping, not zooming). Get as much optical zoom for the money as you can.

Buy rechargable batteries. The flash will drain even the highest power cells quite quickly, adding to the cost.

Get a large enough memory card for your needs. A 512mb card will hold about 300 5mp jpegs.

    A couple I think you'd like:

If you want a camera with point&shoot simplicity but want performance closer to what you would get in an SLR try something like the Fujifilm s5600. 5.1mp, 10x optical zoom, and under $300 US.

A bit less expensive but still a very nice camera is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5

6.0mp, 6x optical zoom, under $250, and I've always really liked Lumix optics.

    Hi

Thanks for your recommendations, i like lumix that you recommend but i was recommend on canonA 540 today by a sale man, they offer normal package plus 1 gb memory card for $378 sing dollar, what do you think ?

  3. A few more details please.

What are you shooting with it? What kind of features do you want? Do you prefer small and simple, or bulkier but with more features? What's your level of experience? Will you be printing any of these photos?

I wil be going to china for for a two weeks holiday, I will be using it to shoot the scenary and of course me and my gf too. I used to own a sony cyber shot 3.2 pixel and maybe i will print my pix.I am in singapore now just wonder where should i get my camera from ???

If you are not sure which one to buy, go to Sim Lim Square and look at them all.

If you know which one to buy, and want the best available price (without haggling), go to "Paris Silk" in Holland Village (on the small cul-de-sac behind Cold Storage).

Thanks , i got a deal from the ppl in simlim they offer me CANON A540 orinal package plus another 1 gb memory card , what do u think ??

  4. You would have to go to Chiang Saen & talk to the captain or agent. Any cargo boat could take you. Its no luxury trip & slow.

Thanks , i will check it out tomorrow if its really that bad i would take bangkokair to jinghong or thaiairway to kunming.

  5. Tachilek is burma borders, i wanna know what is the borders city next to china and what is the city next to burma borders in the other ends ..... thanks in advance.

Chiang sean ferry trip to china jinghong cos 5500 baht , its means that 11000 baht rtd. And i check with thaiairway its 11950baht .........

  6. 4 pixel? 4m pixel perhaps but that sounds like a photo camera and there is a photo department on this site which would probably be a better place to ask. Or are you asking about a digital camera to use on Internet/computer where this would be the best place to ask (but 4m pixel seems high for that). Please advise.

Okie i will check thru the photo dpt , thanks for your response anyway lopburi.

  8. Iam sure Bina will sort you out with some good info.he has a lot of experience on this subject. However i have been doing quite a lot of research specifically on goats in thailand and i found the most usefull and practical stuff on thai websites (in thai)my thai wife found them including feed requirements and diet supplements. Also found how to construct a goat house in thailand,a kind of wooden 2 level construction. The problem with the european web sites is that they often recommend feed stuff that do not grow in thailand.Anyway the locals have goats near me and they basically graze on scrub land...this they prefer to pasture land. Moreover they can be destructive and strip the bark of young trees. If you want to keep them on your land and not wander round on public land like most thais do fencing is an issue....barbed wire is out i read somewhere as they can injure themselves. The thai web link was www.did.go.th/service/goat/goatyset.html .

    Hi Somchai,

I am interested in rearing goat too but its seems that your webs its not working.

  9. You can't find a map, even on the net?

far in the north of Shan State is Muse, along the old Burma Road. You'll not likely get there,

but by the new gambling town on the east side, Mong La, there's access to a very rural part of China. That you'd be allowed entry there is doubtful...

Maybe thru Laos, one can drive now, visas well prepared in advance. Best to go in convoy of course, for safety. This has been done, but there's certainly no overcrowding of Westerners taking this adventure - which one day will become popular, I'm sure...

I had friends that took that overland trip from Slovakia - it took them 8 days on a train through Russia.

I plan to get by boat , well this trip to china will includes kunming, guilin, shen zhen and xiamen.

  10. I will reach Chiang mai on 15 to 17 dec and i let to look for some budget hotel that cost below 1000 baht , any to recommend ?

Veerachai Court. Soi Song Thae Pae. They have aircon rooms with hot shower, toilet, UBC Satelite TV and two beds, phone, plus some furniture for 500 Baht in the old part (I like that one better) or 650 Baht in the new section. No Pool, but good value in my opinion. Close to Night Bazaar and downtown. Within walking distance of both.

There is also the Prince Hotel, which has older, but fair teak rooms and a pool that is well kept. Probalby around 600 or 700 Baht per night. Also close to downtown and they have a poolside restaurant that offers food and drinks for not too expensive.

    We usually stay at Veerachai.

There is also Top North, which is popular with many travellers, but personally, it is a little too busy for me.

Thanks kurt , you are very helpful.

  11. Agree that it is a shame the UK couldn't find the cash or enthusiasm, to put in an entry, after all we're definitely a nation of gardeners ! :D

I gather that there has been some coverage by the BBC. Not sure if it was TV or Radio ?

Also that some of the judges were Brits, including one expert who often judges at Chelsea, and made the long journey out here. And the volunteers who worked long & hard to help the Royal-Project display. Way to go, guys. :o

I am planning to visit next mth, how much is the entry fee ?

  14. Instead of being so fantastcally sarcastic to eachother it would be nice to actually know the NAME of the apartment buildings that have wi-fi, if any. Not just "many". Which ones are good etc. What's the point of answering otherwise?

    Yes i agree ........

  15. Reading websites and looking at 'kits' that are targeted mainly to a US public has little relevance for Thailand.

Read all the material and you will come to a simple conclusion.

    Coconut Oil!

No chemicals needed, no modification to engines especially engines used for farming on generators, except maybe changing rubber material that is not suited for organic oils. What will that cost? 500 baht?

    Thats it!

This is completely impossible for the western world. Coconuts don't grow there. So they mess around with used cooking oil, and other not really suitable stuff. Too many chemicals needed, to get the stuff they want. Why be a chemist , and why source methanol, ethanol, other 'dangerous' chemicals. Why the long process, the filtering, the 'washing', etc, etc...

Second reason is that the temperature in the western world demands oils that stay fluid with low temperatures. All these circumstances are not here in Thailand.

In some places you have to watch out for falling coconuts. These nuts are available in abundance for a pittance.

No glycerine problem, no problem with polymers growing on engine parts. None of the 'bad' characteristics that have to be changed chemically. You might need to mix it with some kerosene (5%) or diesel (10-20%) when temperatures are lower than 25 celsius.

    Keep it simple!

:o As you can see, i am a strong supporter for coconut oil and other products made from it. Still have no coconut orchard however.

As far i as know. IN chiang rai there are some schools using coconut oil as sub for their school bus,its work but the bus break down everyday.

  16. Just a question out of curiousity more than anything else. I go out very seldom ( maybe once a week) for a couple of beers. I usually go to Bo's place as the prices are good and the service is always good. There are a few of the locals that go there that I know of but it doesnt come close to the amount of locals living in Chiang Rai.

    I have been to:

    Bo's place

    CR49

    Thiery's Bar

    The elephant bar

are there others here that I am missing.

There are not that many places in Chiang Rai and that is what leads to my question.

    Where do we go?

    In The Rai! :o:D

Anyone knew of any pool bar in chiang rai ?
