Assuming the lorry was a company owned vehicle, in the UK the ministry would be crawling all over the company offices for evidence of whatever, first the good practice before work random alcohol records, then a multitude of questions about the driver records, it would be relentless, now let's look at over here, move the vehicles and all have a nice day.

The storyline says "dad" to get sympathy but got nothing to do with not wearing a helmet and lacking riding skills. Use rideshare, hire a car. Really not hard to make smart decisions.
But it's cool to be seen flexing your muscles, people are on holiday with no thought to anything could/can happen

How long did Mr. Sunthorn think he was going to get away with this type of crime?
Anything you do on the internet will leave tracks, one way or another.
What a dummy....
A dummy with 800.000 and a smack in the back of the hand.

It is not the pit that caused the accident it is the driver losing control, if it was the pit at fault why is it not full of cars

Could the truck be in lane 2 because it was passing a vehicle in lane 1?

Years ago it wasn't a problem in Thailand generally. I had been to Koh Chang a few times and then went back one year and all the normal bars were shut in the afternoon, had to have a late breakfast in the Monkey bar? to get a beer. Bit the same in BKK, all the afternoon watering holes that I usually used dried up, but some may have escaped.
In Pattaya the only area I am aware of that closed down in the afternoon was Soi 6, but on saying that at new year I took a shortcut down there and there was some activity but nowhere near the old days.
At the end of the day it's all about how blind is the eye.
Short cut my ha ha ha

I can get what i think are similar pains around the mid back area anywhere across back. Feels like little needles . Mostly happens after slouching for an extended period while sitting. Back xrays revealed start of arthritis of spine. Having a gut pulls things out of alignment . Lying flat on back on firm surface straightens it and the pain goes away.
Muscle spasm

IMO this is good publicity for Thai air,
They put a press release out. How many people do you see would see it?
and this is not directed entirely at that one person. it is shot across the bow to all the Thai airline Haters.
He or she is made an example of,
So after a less than perfect flight a criticism finds you in bother with Thai, maybe better to book another carrier is how some would see it if you cant give your opinion on there short comings.

When you havev situations like this how can you expect other road users to obey the law?
Most people have common sense and come from countries where DUI is unacceptable

You are likely right, and it is very possible that the Thai Highway Patrol are the most slothful and lazy organization in the entire nation. They utterly refuse to do their work by patrolling the highway, they're only found after an accident takes place. Truly an obnoxious group of lowlifes
Ouch

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
If the had not diverted , there would had been complains why they did not.
If they were following standard procedure, then the passenger’s post was defamation that could damage the airlines reputation and result in loss of revenue.
The airline was right to take legal action, if I was the CEO I would have done the same, and I suspect that if this was your company you would have done the same also.
No, i would have given an explanation of why it happened and used the PR dept to make good from bad, if i was CEO i would dampen it down not put more wood on.

I have a solution. Round these people up, put them in a local holding cell and keep them there until they can have money sent from home to cover their flight out. Oh yeah, and charge them for their stay in the crowbar hotel.
These sleazy scum give all backpackers a bad reputation.
Why does this story give backpackers a bad name

I have an unusual suggestion, how about getting the highway patrol to actually patrol the highway? Then when people are swerving and behaving in an erratic manner they can be pulled over and tested for alcohol. Right now it seems like they're limited to these ridiculous roadblocks.
And while they're at it the lazy highway patrol could pull over people for reckless driving, what a concept.
That will never catch on

I thought you had have R/T ticket when entering the Kingdom, assuming he flew into BKK. I guess coing from Laos or Cambodia land crossing maybe not an issue?
Or maybe he is on a visa that you do not need a return ticket
