UK drivers / Dutch drivers / US drivers will never change.. guess what they all did. The problem is not the Thai drivers. Its the lack of enforcement. In the Netherlands is was normal to drink and drive until we got campaigns and loads of road checks. Then it all changed. But enforcement is bad in Thailand.

Same in Oz, until breathalyser road testing became the norm and supported and promoted by advertising campaigns rolled out people drove in all states of drunkenness. We still have a problem with alcohol and other drugs and driving here but it's far. far less than it was before the 'booze bus' was incepted.

  3. I aint no expert on the law (other than having appeared before a judge on a series of crimes, shamefully (some for violence) as an active out of my mind drunk and junkie).

To me, (with my limited but personal experience of assault and courts) a person who grabs a person by the throat and takes the time to deliberately and continue to strangle them until they are dead could well be seen by government prosecutors and a presiding judge (yet to be seen and heard) as part of a conscious premeditated series of acts to cause serious bodily harm at the very least (considered a serious offence under our Crimes Act bringing a minimum charge of grievous bodily harm (GBH) in Australia). Add to this the conscious decision and act of continuing to strangle until the person is lifeless i.e. strangling another takes 60 seconds at the very least and at the later stages of strangling it is plain to see and feel (by the strangler) that the person is no longer resisting and closing in on a death experience). This goes way beyond the notion of self-defence i.e. subduing due to fear of ones' own safety and might constitute to a court of law murder rather than misadventure resulting from self-defence, and or manslaughter. If there are witness/es to say that the accused was far stronger and the aggressor in the contact then murder is well within the bounds of charges and possible conviction.

Poor family had to witness this death. Person is dead due to violence. Staff of hotel have had to see the results and the distraught family members. Ambuklance folks have had to attend and see the same and handle the deceased (an unnecessary death). All round a horrible affair ????

Unfortunately, it's a problem where ever you have tourists that are snorkeling, swimming or diving in the ocean.  It just seems that it is a difficult situation to tackle in Thailand as well as other tourist areas around the world.  Bali has similar problems (for example).

Hawaii gets approximately 1/3 the amount of tourists that Thailand gets annually (9.3 million in 2017 vs Thailand's approx. 30 million).

Of 206 snorkeling-related deaths over the past decade (in Hawaii), 189 were non-residents, according to the latest state Department of Health data.   The numbers have only increased over time. Between 1994 and 1998, only 19 people drowned while snorkeling. That soared to 103 non-residents drowning while snorkeling between 2014 and 2018.

There was an average of 71 drownings per year between 2009 and 2018, according to the latest data. Galanis said it is trending upward as more visitors come to Hawaii, highlighting 85 drownings in each of the past two years — more than half of which were tourists.

Hawaii has some of the best trained Lifeguards in the world and all boat and snorkeling tour guides must be CPR/First Aid certified (and most have a lifeguard certificate as well) but the drownings persist and continue to rise.

Link for Hawaii stats mentioned above:  https://www.civilbeat.org/2019/07/drownings-are-on-the-rise-as-tourism-surges-in-hawaii/

Wow that's huge numbers huh! I agree with your overview of training andf competency MPrai. We get some drownings in Oz but nothing like that. I was a lifey for many years in Sydney northern beaches then just up the coast a-ways and we rescued a lot of folks that were seriously on the way to potential, or actual drownings. You gotta have good training (regular checking of capabilities), solid staff numbers, great and up to date equipment.

  5. I’m an Aussie n Aussies treat their country appallingly regarding garbage, and many other forms of pollution!

the general apathy in Aussie about environmental impact of our behaviours is atrocious., illegal dumping, individual

and business pollution, disregard for legislation to protect, throwing <deleted> out car windows, eating take out n dropping it where people eat, refusal To embrace changes ... a great example of what Aussies are really like at a national level was the blowback and blatant  agro against major retailers not giving out free gross plastic shopping bags.

our rivers are screwed by water being stolen and sleezily taken out of rivers by farming and business concerns to make money with no regard for the environment.

thais are not different from most other countries on the planet we all are turning our world into one spherical cesspit.

  6. Sounds like this person isn't a runner, maybe a jogger lol. Only silly people run in the middle of the day, unless your acclimatised and know you can handle heat from experience. All serious, regular runners usually run early mornings, while children and others are asleep or just stirring. As for mosquitoes you'd have to run like a very slow geriatric to get bitten. If you run, actually run instead of shuffle then no way you'll get bitten by mozzies (well, maybe before you start to run and when you stop you'd be carried off for a feast) ... lol
