  1. Either you can connect to the server to start your download or not. If you can't connect to it at all and get a message to the effect that it cannot be found and that happens just about every night - then the odds are it has been shut down. Now I don't know why anyone would do that - usually you don't shut down servers routinely. For one thing, they usually have maintenance functions - backups, updating antivirus, etc. to do both inside and outside of office hours. If it is also a mail server then for sure no admin is going to shut it down every night.

Regarding PING, many admins disallow a retrurn from PING but if it does return one during the day but not at night, then that does indicate it is being shut down.

office int. servers working 24/7 or only during off. hours?

How can i check to see how often the internet server linked to my laptop is connected and turned on?

I use my laptop at work to download various types of files. I have a feeling my office shuts off the servers everytime they close shop. My question is how can I test my theory? I ask because I often have large files in queue (and I don't know whether the internet is connected 24/7 or only during office hours). Obviously, I'd prefer the server to be operable 24/7 so I can maximize download time, but without asking the boss (obviously), how can I test it "technically"?

  2. You definitely do not want to use two anti-virus products on the same machine for a number of reasons.

I'm not familiar with Avast except that it seems to be fairly well received. The free version of AVG does have some limitations like no exception list (Avast is probably similiar). AVG seems to uninstall gracefully so I suppose you could try both, but create a restore point first.

Following advice on this forum, I dumped Norton (which I paid for and was driving me crazy and slowing down everything) and installed Avast.

I recently bought a second PC and it came with AGV software.

Can anyone tell me which one is better, or is it Ok to use both? Any benefits form doing this?

    Thanks

  3. Great tip on the Torpark program.

    Thanks,

    Peter

I have been in your situation JimJom. As a minimum, I carry a USB thumb drive that I have installed two utilities on. One is Torpark and the other is Password Safe . Both of these utilities are FREE.

    From the Torpark FAQ:

Torpark can be used to circumvent censorship firewalls, like at work or in China. It can also be used to substitute a current proxy configuration, such as if a DNS server refuses to allow resolution of some domains. And best of all, if there are no key loggers secretly installed on the machine, nobody is going to know where you went, what you saw, who you spoke to, or what you said. It is all encrypted in a tunnel between your computer, and at least three others somewhere in the world. Only after your data has passed through the encrypted and constantly changing tunnel (a tor circuit) will it reach the internet as unencrypted. The data from surfing the internet goes through the same tunnel as well, passing back to you encrypted, where your computer uses Tor to decrypt it to the Torpark browser. When you need a secret and secure tunnel to surf the internet, Torpark is your mobile solution.

  4. The only software I detest more than Symantec's is Computer Associates'! Free AVG is okay, but does have it's limits. For example there is no way to exclude a program like Torpark which it will identify as a worm and prevent from running. My preference is PC-cillin but it is not cheap.

I agree uninstalling Norton can also cause problems - one of the reasons I don't like it - but if you create a restore point first you should be okay.

    Peter

I'm trying to download, and the Norton Anti-worm device keeps coming up and asking me if I want to continue. When I press yes it just comes back and asks again, when I press no it does the same. What the <deleted> is wrong with it. Pleaes help me before that goes out the window as well
  5. Hi,

For serious problems I suggest the vet on Second Road, close to South Pattaya Road, on the east side. His name spelled phonetically is Dr. Tieng. He used to be with Dr. Nop at the Pattaya-Naklua vetshop.

That vet near Index - if you mean near Central Road with the dog houses out front - somebody here recently recommended them but I had a very, very bad experience with them. That was a while ago, years actually, so maybe they are okay now. The clinic is on Soi Ngun Plawaan in Pattaya (mangled the spelling but that is as close as I can get to it!) inside the market is okay. There are a lot of vets in that clinic, some excellent, some not so hot, so be careful. You can't go wrong with the two male vets in that clinic.

You should be aware that many people that have only a smattering of knowledge pass themselves off as vets so a sign saying VET in the window is no guarantee of anything.

Heartworm med. is always a good idea if you can afford it (with 11 dogs we can't!) altho the risk is low for a long haired dog as heartworm is spread by mosquitos.

If you need directions or more info, email me and I'll give you a phone number - you can call me.

    Regards,

    Peter

Well we are finally getting settled in here. We just got our truck the other day and now it is time for Poompuy (our Lab) to make a visit to the vet. Right now I mainly want to get him groomed and his vaccines updated, maybe some heart worm medicine as well as it was suggested to me earlier that this is important here in Thailand.

Anybody know of a good competent vet anywhere in the Pattaya, Sattahip, Rayong area?

I noticed a vet near Index furniture on Sukhumvit road in Pattaya, Is this one any good?

I read in a previous thread that good quality veterinary care outside of BKK is hard to come by.

We and especially Poompuy appreciate the input!

There might be a way to turn off that warning in the BIOS.
