  1. You could consider using Wireless-N which has improved range over 802.11b and g, but this would involve purchasing a Wireless-N card, and if you router/access-point does not already support Wireless-N, a new router also. Alternatively, using your existing equipment there are a number of pre-made external antennas available for purchase in Bangkok. There is a small shop on the third floor of Pantip, run by a Thai-born arab guy. He specialises in wireless networking and has an excellent selection of these antennas at reasonable prices. Hope this helps.

  2. The problem with free web hosting services is that they are often grossly over-subscribed which can result in poor up-time and performance for your web site. Getting hold of someone for any support issues can also be difficult, as support with these types of hosts is not on par with professional commercial hosting services.

If you're serious about reliable hosting for your site, sign-up with a good hosting company. It's not expensive and the peace of mind and elimination of headaches you'll get in the long run are well worth it.

  3. I highly recommend getting a SSD model. My EEE (SSD model) is lightening fast compared to the hard drive versions. You do sacrifice on space, but gain the reliability and performance that only SSD offers. They are also great little machines, very robust and easy to take with you. If you're going to be using it on the run a lot, try and get a crystal case to protect it along the way.

  4. Private domain registration is very effective indeed. It hides the actual owner details for the domain name from the WHOIS record, making it impossible for anyone performing a WHOIS lookup on the domain to locate the actual owner details. Some providers charge additional for private registration when you can actually get it for free, so choose a provider who offers this at no additional charge above your domain name registration fee. Hope this helps, and if you need further info, just drop me a note.

  5. Beware of the "mass market" hosts. They have a tendency to oversell their services and can be slow to respond to support requests due to the large number of clients they are supporting. As you are looking to host a Joomla content management site, be sure to go with a host who specialises in this type of hosting as their servers are better optimized for PHP and MySQL (which Joomla relies upon).

You mention that you need webmail services so make sure your host has redundant email systems including backup mail servers, and that they utilise RAID protected storage to prevent against hard drive failure, as well as regular remote backups to offsite locations to protect your data.

Many budget hosts also use SATA hard drives which are slower and less reliable than SCSI hard drives. SCSI drives make a big difference in disk access performance which is considerably important for sites using MySQL databases (such as Joomla). Eventhough SATA technology has gone a long way in terms of reliability in recent years, SCSI is still the preferred choice for mission critical and high availability systems.

My advice is to select a smaller provider who has invested wisely in the best redundancy features, and has a reputation for providing highly responsive support. If you need further advice, please send me a message and I'll be pleased to help.

  6. Personally I would stay clear of Acers. Although the support in Thailand is good, I know several people who have had serious hardware issues with them. Go for Lenovo/IBM if you want reliability, plus the quality of their cases is unsurpassed. There is a good selection out on display currently on the ground floor of Pantip Plaza currently. Otherwise check out IT City on the top floor.

  7. The performance of IPStar is poor with frequent disconnections. This has been reported by many users on the forum.

As you indicate money is no object, get a leased line connection, frame-relay or similar. Even if the property your friend is looking to purchase doesn't have a phone line, generally you will be able to obtain one combined with this type of high-end connection. Of course, the cost is out of the reach of most users and is reserved primarily for corporate users. Don't say I didn't warn you.

  8. It is a sad state of affairs indeed which some farang here get into especially when comtemplating suicide over a measly downpayment on a vehicle. Whether a joke or not, the OP's latest remarks are quite disturbing.

Cut your losses on the vehicle, it is in her name anyway and move on with your life. You were aware of that when you purchased it anyway, knowing the vehicle was in her name due to the finance arrangements. Hopefully you can work out your relationship and this wouldn't be necessary in the first place.

  9. Homepro have a large selection of water filters suitable for all requirements. Tesco Lotus and Carrefour also have filters at some of the lowest prices. The larger units have multiple stage filtration (sediment filter to remove solids, activated carbon for chemicals and a third system for iron reduction) suitable for more rural areas. Some filters have UV light filtration to remove bacteria.

  10. I usually stay at the Swissotel Stamford. Great facilities and modern stylish rooms. The Pan Pacific is slightly older but has more spacious rooms. Both of these hotels fit into your price range. Stay clear of the Marina Mandarin, it is quite dated inside for the high tarriff charged.

  11. Microdermabrasion is very effective at evening out skin tone indeed and it is commonly performed to lighten dark spots on the skin. However, you need to be aware that there are recorded instances of people who have had their dark spots actually get more obvious over time. This applies to freckles, etc. I have known several people who have been affected by this.

Usually microdermabrasion is performed by putting fine crystals onto the face which help with exfoliating. Some clinics also use diamond head machines which do not require crystals. The end result is a much smoother complexion but in some patients, as mentioned, dark spots have actually got worse over the long term as a result of microdermabrasion.

Each session takes only 30-45 mins and is painless. The cost varies depending on where you go, from 5000 to 25,000 baht in total, depending on how many treatments you require. It is recommended that you have between 5 and 10 sessions depending on the individual, to achieve an optimum result.

I would suggest contacting the Bangkok Laser Center which has a branch in Siam Square on 02-658-4884. Hydrohealth (who also do colon flush) also provide microdermabrasion at 2500 baht per session. They are located in the Erawan complex at Chitlom. Ph: 02-250-7800.

  12. You can't go past the build quality and robustness of IBM/Lenovo. They are made to last. The Dell laptops I have owned had overheating issues not to mention problems with case quality. Acer's are widely known to be an entry level brand, despite being the third largest computer manufacturer in the world. I know of many people who have had major problems with Acer laptops, mainly motherboard and power supply problems.

  13. Cha-am is one of my favourite places with its long white sandy beach and I would much rather live there than in Hua Hin. Cha-am is much quieter and tranquil than in Hua Hin and if you want a more relaxing enironment, it is the place to be. In saying that, most facilties/shopping are in Hua Hin so expect to travel the short distance when required. If you have a car, it will make things much easier for you.

  14. The rapid wearing away of the painted surfaces on Dell laptops is appalling, and their biggest shortcoming in my view. I managed to convince Dell customer care to replace the entire casing (which they claim was not covered by warranty as it is a cosmetic issue) but they said they did it as a "one-time gesture to restore faith in their company". I only had the computer 10 months and it had very light use. I sold it immediately after the case was replaced. We also had this exact same issue with two other Dell notebooks in Thailand, not to mention multiple overheating issues on two units. I would discourage the OP against purchasing the XPS M1330 he is interested in for these very reasons.

  15. I would not recommend this laptop due to quality issues with the casing. I had a Dell XPS M1210 which is built using the same case material and speaking from experience, after a few months of very light use, the colouring on the casing wore down leaving quite serious cosmetic imperfections. This is apparent in any of the Dell XPS notebooks including the XPS M1330 which you refer to. These Dell laptops also run very hot and I had issues with overheating. The IBM/Lenovo R61 would be a much better alternative quality wise.

  16. Just setup an internal IP on the workstation you want to download torrents on. If your router internal IP is say 192.168.1.1, then set your workstation to 192.168.1.20 for example (but best to set it outside of the DHCP range especially if you have other computers on your network). Then forward the azureus ports on your router to your internal workstation IP address of 192.168.1.20, or if you have DMZ on your router, set that to this internal IP number. It is not recommended to use DMZ for security reasons, but if you are a beginner and don't know how to configure port forwarding, it is an easy setup option. By the way, the internal IP number you allocate to your router and machines on your network has nothing to do with the external IP number your ISP allocates you when you connect.
