  1. Blzbub,

actually remembering what one of the guys told me last time home was that santisuk means peaceful in Thai/Laos so maybe that is what she means

  2. Vegemite,

it does all depend on what fish are in there

Pla nin, Pla sawai, Pla chon, Pla moor, pla chin, pla isok, pla tapien, pla duuk....and the list goes on

For the non float fishing it is the spiral wound cage with the weight inside and about 4 -6 hooks, the bait which can be bought from any bait shop is a mixture (your in laws should be able to help with this) of what looks like sand (red bag with a fish on the front) and a mixture of bread and other stuff (can come in many colours and is like dough) you can also add what is scent available in small bottles e.g. jasmine, vanilla, etc

Float fishing is using a spiral hook set up again but without the weight inside and the same bait.

Have tried various combinations on the hook from the bait mixture along with polystyrene balls on the hook to maggots, worms and kai moot dang (red ant eggs)

As you say with a few beers a most enjoyable day can be had

  3. I love fishing. Been a passion of mine since I was a kid, and would love to try out some of the rivers in Isaan. So have anyone tried it?

I have seen a local or two with fishing rods, so I guess it is possible..

I guess my much better looking and intelligent half would think her farang has completely lost it if I try, but bringing my ultra light rod next time I come over. The thing fits in my suitcase, so no problem.

So if you see a bunch of people having a ball watching the ting tong farang trying to catch fish, stroll over and have a chat. Might be a beer in it for you :-)

I'll be somewhere north of Buri Ram in mid April.

have been a fishing fanatic for years and have held a few ultra-light records for years in south africa. fishing in isaan was a huge anticlimax (almost) wherever there is a likelihood of there being good fishing in public waters, you will find gillnets etc strung about and mostly the fishing is lousy. there are many very exciting fish species in thailand and some of them grow to huge proportions. only place you get good fishing opportunities seems to be in the "fishing parks, where good gamefish seem to attain huge proportions, and are not readily taken out by the locals who do not use reels with brake (drag) systems and then simply get snapped off by anything weighing over half a kilo. you can find these parks all over isaan- my favourite was one on the way out of khorat (nakon rachassima) on the road coming back out of town from macro going back to the "superhighway". just a few hundred metres before the traffic lights on the main road in the city, there is a small sign, which leads you around the back of a used car sales place to a small impoundment, where i was very happy to catch and release a 15kg "blah sawaai"- a beautiful and hard-fighting fish,-have never caught a freshwater fish of that size displaying that much speed and staying power! another very exciting species is the torpedo-shaped bla-shon, which i rank as one of the hardest fighting of all the freshwater fish i have ever caught. hope you find a good spot, really sad to have to go to a park to have a shot at a good fish, but that seems to be one of the realities of life in thailand. dont worry about the tingtong thing- they watched me using a flyrod off the coast of kho tao and laughed like hel_l until i started catching fish on a large popper made from an old thai "flipflop" sandal.

regards and wishing you "tight- lines" ,

    Frikkie,

I am visiting Korat next month and driving from khon Kaen, staying at Royal Princess. This fishing park that you mention..does it have rods for hire or should I bring my own ?, does it have resturaunt i.e. food and beer ? and most importantly as never been in Korat can you give me directions from hotel

    Thank you

  4. not on a golf course, but years ago back in Scotland was practising on local park area and hit a nice 5 iron then saw it was heading for two guys sitting , shouted fore !! what I didn't realise was that they had bent a sapling right over and one was sitting on it holding it, well when he heard me shout he dived off and the sapling sprung back up into the other one's crotch .......ouch....lucky enough I knew theguys and had a laugh when he had recovered (about two days later)

  5. agreed Up2ubar,

I think a word with his girlfriend is required to find out exactly where she is from Udon or KK ? even Isaan ?

  6. Thanks for the replies everyone!

KK Boy... thank you for the info. Since you mention airports, golf courses and such then it's likely there's some hotels nearby. I'll Google Khon Kaen to learn more about the area.

My friend calls his GF 'Ot' or something similar, he tells me it's a nickname. Neither of us know her lastname although she's told him in the past. At least she says she'll meet us at the A/P in Bangkok.

I'm lobbying to rent a car in Bangkok and drive to Santisuk so I can tour the area... what do you think of that idea?

    Aloha.

    BlzBub,

a lot easier to fly from BKK as about 450km drive, 50 minute flight about 2200 baht OW, Khon Kaen quite large city and plenty of hotels also plenty of car hire places too.

  7. Actually this is where I live in Khon Kaen, well done with correct spelling.

Ban Santisuk is about 2km from the airport, when you come out of airport and get onto the main highway go about 1.5km and after the Jet garage take next left towards army base/golf course and hey presto you are in Santisuk.

What is the girls name as missus might know her ?

  8. Just to let people know of a new resort just opened in Khon Kaen, only 5 minutes from the airport on the long straight road into airport.

Rooms are immaculate and very big, upstairs at 1000 baht and downstairs (bigger room) at 1200 baht, cable TV in both.

Nice swimming pool & lounge area, crazy golf course.

Owner is a Thai I have known a long time and very nice guy he is, Mr Kem

  9. Hi Lopburi,

what is left on this one ?

2nd passport was entry 27 Sep 2006 (Dep 9 Oct) next entry was 5 Jan 2007 (Dep 11 Feb) included visa run to Laos for new VOA, what is left on this one ?

I am legally married to a Thai but never applied for marriage visa, will have to contemplate this one now I think

    KK Boy

  10. Thanks guys,

yeah if you are travelling all over your company will send a letter on your behalf as you could be in Thailand at the time but require visa for say Cameroon then if only one passport you have a problem as no consulate in Thailand, so Fedex, DHL your second to company who then get visa processed and send 2nd passport back to you

  11. Guys,

have heard so many conflicting stories regarding my position, I currently do a 28 day on 28 day off rota in Russia and return to Thailand on tourist visa each time (which works out at 26 days in country) so in reality I am doing only 88 days in a 180 day period.

I hold two UK passports and have been alternating these each time coming in, the question is would only passport be ok ? and also do they track electronically now or is it up to the immigration official to spot any errors ?

    Regards

  12. I too work on a rotational basis & like to relax when I come home and that means wearing what I want i.e. most days shorts and t-shirt, sandals....to me it is more comfortable.

In all my 4/5 years of living here in Khon Kaen (near airport/army base) I have never had anyone comment on my dress code and have many Thai friends.

Sometimes I think people read too much into what Thais require from us and how we should act with them, by no means do I disrespect them and do try to absorb the culture but taking things too far on how we act with them I think is reading into something that just ain't there i.e. too many misconceptions

  13. Regarding the soi dogs, where I live the nearest house to me is say 100 metres away, he has about 6 mange flea ridden dogs which are constantly coming near my house as I have three cocker spaniels, my dogs are kept very clean but keep getting fleas (I think the thai word is maat & hep) from these, does any one know if I can get my dogs injected to prevent this ?

My unfortunate mate who lives quite close by, his neighbour has 8 dogs of all shapes and sizes kept in a small area all day & night, barking, whining, etc.......unfortunate ? yes as neighbour is police man !!

  14. [quote name='Vespa' date='2006-12-14

The OP post seemed like nothing more than a troll , asking where to meet Isaan women. :bah:

So I rode the wave and had some fun with it..

Vespa, to reveal who the real troll is, you only have to look in your own mirror. You have an extremely warped sense of humor as well as a warped sense of reality.

Must be why I am such a success ! :o

So are you up for watching the dogs ? :D:bah::D :D

Vespa, if you think Issan woman are ugly why post on the Issan forum in the first place, you have been in Thailand 10 years ?, <deleted> !!! :D

I personally think you are some form of troll trying to get a rise out of the regular posters from Issan

Ok give us your personal history up to date i.e. where do you live, proffesion, girlfriend/wife, etc and let us comment on that instead of you sitting there and giving us your "opinion"......prick !!!!

    KK boy

  15. There have been a number of reports lately about marriages between Issan women and farangs bringing prosperity to parts of Issan and the women becoming farang in their eating habits. Successly relationships they seem to be generally

I am 2 years now seperated and live alone but would like to meet and possibly reside in Issan. Where do you meet prospective wives? The bars are really risky and agencies are just money making machines so it must be personal introduction friend of a friend I guess any advice on this. I don't live in Pattaya but down in Sattahip

    Constructive advice only please

    John

Isaan women tend to be ugly , there are many available Thai women mixed with Chinese blood that are very attractive and unlike Issan women they do not all look alike.

Why not set your goals a little bit higher ?

Vespa, bit of generalisation here, what is your experience of Isaan ? all look alike ....complete <deleted> !!!!, ugly ?? I don't think so, try going to one of the universities located here and then tell me that they are all ugly

  16. Hi MacB, not sure about bore hole fishing as never tried it before but one tip for Gary A if using the bait ball with multiple hooks is to put small polystyrene balls on each hook, also to add to the "putty" is a small amount of scent, typically Jasmine, which can be purchased from any bait shop, normally these shops have many different types of scent and an idea is to experiment as have found that the same species of fish will not go for the same bait all the time dependant on which lake you are fishing.

Another one for the bait ball hooks is the tiny live shrimp which the girls normally eat in their som tam can also work

    Cheers

  17. Hi MacB, what kind of fish are you going for ??, I have just returned to work about 4 days ago brrrr -7 DegC, but where I live in Khon Kaen is on a small lake which was closed from fishing for 11 months to restock, it opened about 1 week before I left and there was a lot of nice fish there

Pla Nin, Pla sawai, Pla tapien, Pla duk, Pla chon, Pla chin and Tap Tim, the biggest I managed was a 4 kilo pla sawai

Have just telephoned the wife and one of the guys has just landed a 7 kilo Pla Isok !!!!!

I think a separate fishing section would be a good idea for here so as to swap ideas, tricks, etc

  18. Been married 5 years in Khon Kaen, I work away a lot as in oil & gas, currently Georgia (formerly Russia), so when I get my leave time my wife insists that I kick back and enjoy my leave time i.e. have a beer, fish & play golf :D

If I want to play golf anytime, no worries and as an aside her Xmas present was a set of golf clubs so she can join me on the course, ###### some of them caddies were nice :o

All joking aside I think it is mostly in their upbringing that they are taught to take care of the breadwinner

  19. Not generally available. It is part of the licencing for use of the DVD intelectual property.

Better to have DVD's with the region info removed. You can create back-up copies of your DVD's with the region info removed. This may not help with some of the "better" brands because they will not play those DVD's too. The region thing is supposed to prevent piracy.

Easy way to do it, is select a model which you like, go on the net & do a search for DVD codes, there are numerous sites which gives the codes to turn your DVD into multi region via the remote control

  20. Hi all,

if anyone is around the Khon Kaen area we are in the process of forming the "Khon Kaen Bad Golf Association", quite a few us play now, nothing serious just a good morning/afternoon out.

Normally play two to three times a week at army base near airport.

PM me if interested in a round
