  1. I can just see the TOT blurb

" Thailand-Land of Smiles. Enjoy the tranquility and harmony of a place where people have co-existed peacefully for centuries. ( Free riot insurance included. Offer ends Jan 2011) "

I guess we can only pray that it will not ntake them too long to see that the strength of the baht is unsustainable for tourist purposes as well as exports and they let it devalue. we can hope!!

  2. More moronic 'copy-cat' extremists with no brains. Another nail in the Thai tourist coffin - wait until the press blow it up "ATM BOMBING ACROSS THAILAND - Embassies warn against travel".... :D:)

Is it far from the truth? Would you not be a bit more wary if you are using an ATM?

The way the Pound is going we might get better value out of an exploding ATM!

  3. ^ Never. There are other options such as Astra (Malaysia) or Dream (Philippines).

Can we also presume that the cable co's like Sophon and TMN here in Pattaya will also lose SS! 2 and 3? I presume so. Dire news indeed

  4. Inspector Lt. Col. Suwan Un-Anan demoted to a railway police inspector in Thonburi

Ouch. Talk about sending a message.

On the other hand, maybe there is need of someone with his experience and skill to head up the investigation of the passengers that pee all over the floor in the toilet of the trains. :D Maybe he can lead a crackdown on kids that put coins on the tracks or hobos.

Now's the time to call in the SWAT team :)

  5. Am I the only one waiting for the baht to take a whacking great hit against the pound so I can transfer some money at more than 50 bhat to the pound.

Pound and Euro have been tanking since late last year. Lets hope a little "hiccup" is in the wind!

    :):D :D

When we see our reserves reduced by 30 percent in the last 2 years we all cry, I agree. The future though is even bleaker as the pundits forecast 31.50 Baht to $ by the end of the year, and the way the lovely quid is performing against the dollar right now I am afraid that we will be looking at THB 45 to the Pound before long. maybe the exit of the labour party in May will help, but a lot of damage as been done. I will get off my political soap box but we are in for a rough ride I think

  6. After the forum now is going to solve the major political issues of a country that is not THEIRS:

Are there plans for making T'land a colony, and if yes: under custody of which nation?

Will this not impose international conflicts, if - say - Ghana takes over: This would lead to border conflicts with Cambodia transfered to other continents. (not sure on which side of the borders in question)

Would it not be better to stage another oil or terrorism crisis and let those take charge (or just - charge) who have most experience with such operations?

    Merry Christmas, everyone :)

Send in a gunboat! Happy Christmas everyone and let's spend our time on more productive thinking on Thaivisa.com, long may it reign

  7. Software police target Phuket businesses

    phuket-Phuket-Gazette-IT-Manager-Seubsak-Sahaworaphan-1-efAtoPS.jpg

Phuket Gazette IT Manager Seubsak ('Big') Sahaworaphan.

PHUKET: -- As part of a nationwide investigation, Phuket businesses are being investigated closely by police for using illegal computer software.

A Gazette source said a 'high profile' property investment firm was raided earlier this week.

Police are said to have seized hardware and software, all allegedly unlicensed. The company was given a million baht fine, the source said.

Following news of the raid, a number of Phuket businesses reportedly closed for the day.

Colonel Sarayuth Pooltanya, deputy commander of the Royal Thai Police Economic and Cyber Crimes Division (ECD), said late last month that "all businesses will have to ensure that they are compliant with the Thai Copyright Act."

"Major efforts" to target companies using pirated software began on October 26, he said.

A list of 1,000 suspect companies nationwide compiled by the ECD has been based on tips, some anonymous. These are typically from sources within the target companies.

Leads are also being shared by the Business Software Alliance, which runs a toll-free hotline and website for informants to report on the use of pirated and unlicensed business software.

In recent months, the ECD has stepped up enforcement of intellectual property rights in respect of software.

August marked one of the ECD's most successful months, with 15 substantial raids netting 54.5 million baht's worth of allegedly non-copyright software.

The raided companies came from a wide variety of industries, including manufacturing, real estate, automobiles, shipping, design and engineering.

Phuket Gazette IT Manager Seubsak Sahaworaphan said businesses should perform regular checks to make sure employees are not downloading illegal software.

“We use a software checking device called System Hound which is installed in all our computers and has a centralized network control point,” he said.

“The system performs regular checks on all of our computers and makes sure all licenses are up to date,” he said.

It was not reported if or when the probe would be expanded to include computer companies that load up hard drives with illegal software when selling new machines to customers.

NOT just Phuket ! I went down to my accountnats in South Pattaya to find their office nearly empty, stripped of computers and just the bosses and 2 dogs there (canine) as the software guys had raided them and now they have to pay THB 125000 to sort things out, and they are Thai! Take care out there!

  8. I won't be using it just now, the test program says My graphics card is no good and I will not buy a new card just to upgrade to a new OS.

My computer ex[ert tells me you almost certainly will not be able to upgrade from XP either as many drivers and stuff are differenet, so unless you have VISTA, DON'T GO THERE!!

  9. I was terrified my car would conk out so I decided to turn left into Siam Bayview Hotel to find some parking. Big mistake, the hotel driveway was even deeper than the road, and I have no idea how I managed to drive through the deep water and up the slope at the front of the hotel.

When I waded back to the road, the water was well above my knees, and I am 6 foot tall. My exhaust must have been several inches under water. Maybe it's because it is a diesel engine, like the baht buses. Does anyone know about this? Can diesel engines run with their exhausts submereged?

There's no doubt about it, the Germans really know how to make cars. :)

    ...and submarines!

I would vote for Lotus on that score, remember the Bond movie?

  10. That was an unbelievable amount of rain is such a short period of time. I was driving down Soi Siam Country Club and saw the water shooting 2 feet up out of the storm drains and was worried it was going to start running in under the doors of my truck. However I have seen worse flooding in Canada after a really good rain so don't start bashing Thailand over this. Every country gets the same thing and builds their storm drains for the "average" year and expects flooding occasionally.

In the UK it would be just as incompetent or I would rather say unlucky, flooding in the Hanger Lane underpass not unknown, and of course we have the wrong sort of leaves on the railway tracks in the autumn! Pattaya is doing what it can, don't knock it. Have FUN in the floods, you'll not need a car wash for a month.

  11. Thailand airfare war hots up

    By John Le Fevre

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- Just a day after Thai Airways International (THAI) entered the discount airfare market with its “Fly THAI, get more” promotional fares designed to “put AirAsia's offering to shame,” local carrier Bangkok Airways (BA) has fired back with its own “Flyer Pass” range of discounted air fares.

The THAI campaign sees the airline cutting it’s fares by 20 percent below seasonal standard fares, with up to one-third of all seats on all THAI flights being sold at the promotional rate.

Pandit Chanapai, executive vice-president for THAI's commercial department said on Tuesday the airline hoped the campaign will help it fight back against the low-cost carriers and increase its flight load to 70 percent.

"We are telling the public there is another good option for buying air tickets and that we are ready to compete squarely with other airlines".

In direct response, privately owned BA responded on Wednesday with a series of “Flyer Pass’s, priced between Bt9,000 and Bt29,000 (about $US264 to $US851) for a booklet of four flight tickets valid for one year.

The Flexi Pass-Fun package, priced at Bt9,000, is valid for all domestic routes flown by BA, while the mid priced Flyer Pass-Fusion covers domestic routes as well as flights from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh, or Phnom Penh.

The Flexi Pass-Fancy, priced at Bt19,500, can be used for domestic and international routes, including Bangkok to Siem Reap or Luang Prabang, or from Samui to Singapore, while the most expensive package, the Flyer Pass-Freedom, priced at Bt29,000, can be used on the Bangkok to Hiroshima or the Bangkok to Maldives sectors.

BAs senior sales director, Chonlada Chevathakorn, said the airline had prepared a total of 20,000 tickets across the four packages and expected them to be sold out within four months.

According to Chonlada, “in general Bangkok Airways does not give discounted fares to passengers during the high season for traveling, but we are doing so this year, to stimulate passenger numbers.

“The average air fare under the promotion is discounted by 20 per cent from normal prices," she said.

According to THAI, its entry into the discount airline market has been brought about by airlines continuing to undercut each other in a desperate bid to cope with a market marred by global recession and pandemic A(H1N1), which has seen the airlines’ passenger numbers from east Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea tank by up to 20 percent.

The new THAI promotional fares will see an all-inclusive round-trip start at Bt2,810 for domestic routes, while regional flights start at Bt4,300.

Whereas the THAI promotional tickets must be purchased by July 31, and travel made before September 30, BAs Flyer Pass’s are valid for travel between August 1 this year and July 31, 2010.
