  1. Having to deal only with machines is something I really hate and it's becoming more and more common in the subways of western cities.

Here in Paris there are still (less and less) people sitting on chairs at kiosks, but most of them are only supposed to "inform" travellers and don't sell tickets anymore. Go figure.

I would suppose that in a country where labour costs are cheap, one would avoid this nonsense, but obviously not.

  2. "Volts burn, amps kills" is a well-known saying. The article is right saying that that many milliamps of current through the heart can kill (I can't say the exact figure, though). It's more important than the tension (number of volts) involved, although by the Ohm law the two are linked, of course.

Phone chargers do deliver 5 volts, that's correct. However all modern chargers use switched mode, not transformers, and this provides much, much less insulation from the 220V source in case of a component failure.

The "CE" mark on some cheap Chinese equipment is a well-known trick. It's supposed to be a Chinese "China Export" certification that means nothing. It's been made to look very, very much like the "CE" European Certification mark on purpose.

Some people claim that the "China Export" story is a hoax and that the CE marking on cheap Chinese stuff is nothing more than a fake.

  3. I have vivid memories of driving up a friend who was in the middle of a heart attack to the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital years ago.

I had picked him up at his hotel after a call from his Thai partner there, he was conscious but in a pretty bad shape.

I recall seeing him lying on a stretcher at the ER entrance, nobody paying much attention to him UNTIL the lady at the registration desk got what she was asking for i.e. someone's credit card (it was mine). He was taken right away and received the appropriate care.

I can't help but wondering what would have happened if I didn't have this credit card to show...

  4. I concur that iMobile has some gems well hidden in their incredibly complex and moving line of products.

Finding the right one is a matter of luck or getting feedback from someone you know, though.

I've had two, including an old IQ-4 that's still alive and kicking with battery life only slightly shorter than it used to be some 4 years ago.

The IQ-5.7 is somewhat younger (2 years or so) and is a very reliable phone with a surprisingly good screen (I assume IPS).

As I mentioned earlier, the Lavas provided by AIS as so popular among youngsters that they must be somewhat good.

  5. A big Achille's heel to the cell phone verification for Gmail (and Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) is the aggressive way they close down your account when you are travelling. Log in from another country and, boom!, you are locked out for suspicious activity. Problem is that you are no longer in Thailand where you undoubtedly registered your local mobile phone number. Unless you have overseas roaming, there is no way to get the OTP that they will SMS to your Thai mobile number. FWIW, I have never been able to use TrueMove-H's roaming in the USA. In the True shop they say it's activated, and in the mobile phone app, it shows activated, but my phones never can connect to a USA provider.

As other posters have explained, there are different ways around this: preassigned codes, Google Authenticator.

Another point is that you can register more than one mobile phone number.

I have both my European and Thai numbers registered, and I can have the codes sent to either.

  6. when I ordered a seiko watch earlier this year I opened the actual box to check that the watch was genuine before paying(cod), it was genuine though. When you are getting a brand name item you need to make sure it is genuine before handing over any money due to the amount of fakes that are found here in Thailand, opening the actual packing box though should be fine in most cases on lesser item but when you spend several thousand baht you need to be certain you are gettng what you pay for.

Nonsense. When buying something from a reputable company like lazada it will be genuine.

Well, for items sold by Lazada themselves, probably, yes.

But Lazada, like Alibaba, is also an aggregator of a lot of e-shopping companies outside of Thailand and especially in China.

For those, I wouldn't be so sure.

  7. you might all be eating your words when the general election is held next year and Thailand transforms into much better place than it was 3 years ago or in fact the last 30 years, the current government made it very clear that they would not tolerate divisive interference in their road map and so far it is on track and working, I am no supporter of a military government but see very clearly why they are doing what they are doing, we have peace here not seen for a very long time, you usually find those that don't support strict measures are those that do not respect the law or its enforcement.

A general election? sure there might be one, with only one party allowed to have candidates and making it illegal to even say that people shouldn't vote for them (let alone vote for someone else).

  8. It is unfortunate that the passenger hadn't had a machete ready as well as the camera and when touched on the leg simply hacked the cabbies hand off at the wrist.

Sounds a tough penalty for being wayward but would send the necessary message.

So basically you're advocating implementing the Sharia law here in Thailand?

This is bound to be very popular among the large crowd of islamophobes on TVF...

  9. I wonder how Thai's can be so polite but will never give way to anyone. Either in cars or even going through a doorway. They don't seem to understand that if I approach a doorway and am partway through it there is insufficent room for them to pass as well, but they won't stop, just push through anyway. Same on the roads - I flashed my lights, I'm coming through. To hell with you!! Where is the legendary politeness in that?

I'll try with my own explanation for the driving part at least (never experienced the doorway thing myself): because many people just switch their brains to a different mode when they are behind the wheel, and it's not -by far- only a Thai thing. I know quite a few polite, educated, peaceful and caring people here in the west who become completely different persons when driving, aggressive, careless etc. especially if in a hurry.

However, this is much worse in Thailand because they don't have the fear of police. You can jump stop signs, red lights etc with almost zero chance of being caught. In the west, the risk of getting caught and facing big fines and points being taken from your driving license tends to moderate people's attitudes.

  10. The bike driver did not "hit the rear of the truck". He was likely run over and got stuck to the back wheel.

As for "driving standards"... if the deceased was indeed a street racer, it's more like not having these suicidal games.

I've seen such bike street racing taking place at night along a (almost deserted, hopefully) stretch of road near Pathum Thani and it was fascinating to watch. In a sense that you sense imminent death and you can't help but eeringly admire how these young guys (some must have been 15-16 I think) have absolutely no fear of death.

  11. You will be asked questions like:

    - provide the last password you remember (provided that you ever changed it)

    - when did you create your Gmail account

I know that the advice comes a bit late, but registering your mobile phone in your Google account is a fast and way to recover your password. Also, it allows you to use the extra safety of 2-factor authentication: a SMS is being sent with a code every time you log into your Gmail account for the first time in a given computer/browser. Great feature IMO.

  12. Well, I must say that I had bet on that exact score... just reversed.

Great playing by Whales, these guys have a real fighting spirit. That where he completely fools 3 defenders with a turnaround is a classic.

I would not feel comfortable if I were a Portuguese player now. Ronaldo, beware.

Whales-Iceland in finals? what would mean Iceland getting pas France (quite a possibility I'm afraid) and then Germany? Not that likely but that would be fun indeed.

  13. That was just a joke... mostly directed as someone who's likely to read this thread if the name catches his eyes.

I have total respect for Euronews, it's just that their audience is microscopic at least where I live, despite being shown on most ADSL TV boxes for free.

As an insomniac, I like Euronews ... helps me a lot to fall asleep when I turn it on wink.png

  14. I would not be surprised a bit to learn that there is no computer application to enter this information in their systems or more likely that the current application(s) they use is(are) still quite far a long shot from receiving the changes needed to accommodate this information. This would have required some forward thinking, collecting all the technical information needed to modify the database and application (provided that it exists and hasn't been lost), have the right people booked to do the job etc. and... TiTiIT (this is Thailand in IT, been there, have the t-shirt and know how it goes there).

So it's likely that, just a poster has seen, these forms will sit quietly in cardboard boxes for months if not forever because the powers-that-be will change their minds before their IT can handle them.

  15. +1 to advice above.

Of course it varies a lot from one person to another, but on me Ibuprofen works much better for tooth ache.

Available over the counter (purple meds) in every pharmacy and sold at higher dosage (I've seen up to 600mg) than in Europe.

Pulling a wisdom tooth can be a difficult and messy operation if the tooth roots are not straight. It also requires fairly high doses of local anaesthetics injected so I would definitely choose very carefully where I would have this done in Thailand.
