  1. Oh well... maybe it's just broken (I'd say that wouldn't surprise me, but that would be construed as Thai-bashing so I won't wink.png ), maybe you could try with IE indeed. Can't try it because I'm not willing to input my real data in there.

As sunnyjim5 wrote, VOA can be obtained at the airport, I'm not quite sure what this online registration brings you and whether it's worth the efforts.

    No other ideas, sorry.

  2. Worked in Chrome for me.

What happens after you click on the "Proceed to ..." link?

    @sunnyjim5: not Thai-bashing. People-who-are-irresponsible-enough-to-bring-up-a-governement-web-site-without-proper-certificates bashing.

And the name you gave for the link to be clicked was incorrect too. It's "Proceed to <name of the web site> (unsafe)"

  3. Click on "Avanced" and then on the "Proceed to..." link.

The Thai Government is so cheap (or negligent) that these people don't even care about using real, paid for certificates for their web sites. They use certificates obtained from some in-house authority, not recognized by browsers. Hence the alert from Chrome.

This kind of things happen a lot of amateur, home-made web sites using encryption because real certificates are a bit of a hassle to get and cost (some) money.

From a government web site, it's just ridiculous.

    This is Thailand.

  4. There has been a very sharp increase in the number of police and/or army roadblocks on the main roads since the onset of the military regime.

I've seen more of them along my frequent drive from/to Bangkok to/from Kamphaeng Phet than ever before.

I think that most of this checks are completely unrelated to a crackdown on overstaying foreigners. Weren't related before the whole thing started obviously, but still aren't.

Most of the time I'm waved on or just asked a few simple questions (where are you going), no documents checked or just my driving licence.

It's just what authoritarian regimes usually do...

  5. At the risk of drifting off topic since this is no PSG forum... (sorry if I do)

Thought they had already won the froggy league, in which event it would be no surprise if they played their B team and just rotated in 3 first teamers for some match practice. I guess he's taking the alternative approach and telling them all to go out and get some excercise; the unhappiness act probably just necessary cover for the cameras?!

European level competition must be so much easier for these mega teams and particularly when you combine it with being dominant in the 5th equal league (I put it on a par with the Dutch Eredivise and that maybe doing the cloggies a disservice).

Oh yes they have won already, but the team that played and lost against Monaco Sunday was definitely no B team.

They have set themselves a goal of reaching 90 points in the Ligue 1, so I'd assume that they're not willing to play the remaining matches as mere exercise. I don't think Blanc's frustration was faked.

Anyway, I can assume that motivation will run much higher when playing against ManC.

  6. Just to cheer you up a bit ManC fans: PSG has been beaten 2-0 by Monaco yesterday evening, and while playing at home on top of this (first time this season and much more).

Their performance was abysmal and they really did deserve to be beaten.

Monaco really doesn't have an impressive attack usually, their standing at 2nd position in Ligue 1 is mostly due to their defensive play.

Their planting 2 goals to PSG would mean much if, like many people, I wasn't inclined to think that the PSG players' minds were already in Manchester and that they didn't give a crap about this Ligue 1 match.

I'm sure Laurent Blanc was very unhappy (and he did seem so).

  7. I really do fail to see the reason behind this post!

If you have an extension of a Visa, you know that you have, by law, to make a 90 day report.

By making this post, you obviously have the ability to use the internet - therefore you also should have the ability (if unable to physically attend your local Immigration), to make the 90 day report on line!

This would be correct if the online reporting actually worked.

    For many it does not.

I have tried from 3 Different Computers to report on line without success! many times! trying to save 1000Baht of fuel.

As an IT professional, I must say that this on-line reporting service is the most broken and amateurish web site I've seen in quite a while. First, AFAIK it's only usable through Internet Explorer which is by itself a red card in 2016. With all the fancy animated icons and flashy colors but badly broken functionality, it looks like some personal blog page hastily brought up by a high-school student over a rainy week-end.

How do the Immigration Service expect to be taken seriously when they don't spend some money to have the web service designed by a good company? There certainly are many businesses in Thailand able to do a proper and well-designed site that will scale up and the cost wouldn't push the country's deficit in the red. The current site has obviously been developed by rank amateurs.

Or is this thing only for the show and they don't really want people to use on-line reporting because this leaves less opportunities for arbitrary requirements for documents and possibly asking for tea money? I have to wonder.

  8. Any other fans of the so-called "kraut rock"? the progressive psychedelic german music of the 70s (and 80s too)?
Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and of course Kraftwerk.

Moondawn is the absolute top for me... can't listen to this one without getting high... without the help of any additional substance (well at least they're not required)

  9. ^Definitely didn't want Barca, Bayern and Real.

Would have preferred not to have drawn Athletico or PSG.

Would have been happy to draw Wolfsburg or Benfica.

City, having had a poor season to date, I assume will be underdogs for the tie.

I was impressed by PSG at Chelsea and think as a footballing team they are slightly ahead of us right now. If our erratic team 'show up' for these games (looks like Premier has gone for us so they might be up for these games), I could see us doing it.

Currently heart says City win, head says PSG.

And you? What do you think?

About the same about avoiding the big, big guys tongue.png

PSG has been playing very unequal in the last matches (I discount the meaningless 9-0 against poor Troyes). They've even been beaten for the very first time in Ligue 1. Aurier is dearly missed in the team IMO (not a hint that I think he should be forgiven for what he's done, can't wait to see what Blanc is going to do though). The outcome of their matches against Chelsea is somewhat flattering I'd say, having watched both matches. They did well, but not as much as the score says.

Anyway Ligue 1 is so weak that even a team which massively dominates here is not much more than a match for ManC where they currently sit in Premier League.

It's going to be a tough confrontation I think. I don't see a clear advantage for PSG.

I see ManC having a better team fighting spirit as well. PSG's team spirit is not that good. There has been a big clash between Zlatan and Van de Will recently, and the Aurier case does not bring a good spirit either.

  10. Hello ManC fans.

Just curious, what's the general feeling about facing PSG in the C1 semis ?

(French, as my avatar suggests, not a PSG fan by any means but well, for once we have a team doing well in the C1, so might as well get interested...)

  11. As others wrote: in all the chains you can end up with 0.25, 0.50, 0.75.

    At 7/11, Tesco, Makro, BigC....

Yes it's a "chain", supermarket thing.

Same as in the west, often for those seemingly cheap prices.

Some Euro countries have abolished the 1 and 2 cent coins.

In Germany it's still a holy cow and you will hardly find a price of 2 Euro, 1.99 of course wink.png

Same here in France with these pesky .99 prices.

But no one uses cash in supermarkets anymore.

I do agree that at when I'm in Thailand, at my local 7/11 they're more than happy to let me spend some time digging out a dozen of so of these small coins to make for the exact change. They seem to actually like getting them.

  12. No one has discussed by how much farangs can be overcharged yet.

    Sometimes it gets plain ridiculous.

I mean, paying 100B vs. 50B for thais? even 500B instead of 200B? I'm not happy but I can get over it.

But how about being asked 500B compared to 30B for thais as I recall in a national park? pretty damn ignominious I'd say.

  13. Folks, make the effort to learn some Thai and get to listen to what other people say when discussing prices.

Then when offered an inflated prince, just say "the gentleman/lady right before me has got that price, so I want it too" in Thai with a large smile.

Works for me all the time. Actually, just speaking some Thai gets you the local price quite often.

Obviously, it seldom if ever works in places where dual pricing is institutionalised. Although it did work at the Chainat bird park not long ago when I arrived with the whole Thai family including a bunch of kids. No documents asked.

  14. I would like to say you are wrong, but for one thing, it's true: last year there was Casino black chocolate, more than 75 % pure chocolate, very good and much cheaper than Lindt or Nestlé, many people bought it, and now nothing at all, I don't know why it has disapeared for at least 10 months ; for the rest, the Big C Market in Cha am is always full of Casino products but I have heard that it's because it's a Big C market ; I know other Big C in Thailand ( not in Bangkok or tourist areas ) and they have very, very few Casino products, several have nothing ( Thai people , I think, are not interrested )

I have to second this. The only Big C branches I've seen selling Casino products were the ones in Pattaya, Hua Hin and some in downtown Bangkok. Even the one in Pathum Thani doesn't have any, and neither do the ones in Nakorn Sawan and Kamphaeng Phet I know quite well.

  15. Traveler's checks are a thing of the past like vinyl 33rpm discs here in France and I much regret it. They used to be a convenient and cost-effective way to bring cash to my Thai account.

Now I need to bring in a few thousand Euros in notes at each trip and being worried about these getting lost of stolen until I put them in the bank. Admittedly the most risky part is the train trip to Charles de Gaulle airport, especially when at night.

When at the Kasikorn Bank where my account is, the most boring, unnerving and time-consuming part begins: watching the counter clerk photocopying each and every banknote, making me sign every sheet of paper and painstakingly checking every note for the tiniest spot or tear. An average one of 10-20 notes gets rejected, with "defects" I couldn't see without a magnifying glass. Takes 1+ hour for a couple thousand Euros.

AFAIK only KBANK does this crap, and it's a company policy. Maybe they don't do it in high tourist places because it would be too time consuming, but in BKK and around they do. Since I don't have a work permit anymore, moving my account to a different bank isn't quite an option.

  16. I think that this is clearly a reaction to the fact that making Buddhism a state religion was rejected in the draft of the new constitution.

These two topics can shed some extra light too:
