How can a city be compared to two large countries?

  2. Wish I could help, but I'm in a similar conundrum.

With all the trillions of websites and links, sometimes it seems like useful information on the web has been sequestered away to make more room for quadrillions of megs of rubbish.

    To my problem:

There's lot of inexact info on what is needed to fly from BKK to USA.  Even the U.S. Embassy gives only "boilerplate" unclear and incomplete guidance.  Call them up or send an email, right?  Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, hah!!  Oh, thank you, I needed a good laugh.

After floundering for hours, I still don't know if I need a Fit to Fly document only - the Bangkok doctors who do such things are doing boom business..  And I'm perfectly willing to pay what is necessary.  But the one I found in BKK who seemed professional, etc., and cashing in on this boondoggle (bookings back to back at 10 minute intervals for $3000 baht or so)...well, their booking website (10 minute intervals - boom business!).  And, misinformed dope that I am, I have no idea if I should jump on that and be happy....although the one I've been watching and searching on seems to be having birthing traumas - the site is now showing nicely the open and filled 10-minute appointments....but all of the open ones do not respond to setting an appointment.

Anybody either ahead of me on this or a bit more clever?  I can't sit on being flummoxed, I've booked flight out on April 3.

Hello, I need to send some money to another city & they suggest I use TransferWise. Have you used it & is it OK?  Thanks.

I've used transferwise several times in the last couple years.

I've found them to be professional, reliable, prompt, and they charge less commission than others.

The only superior way I've found is Charles Schwab.  Their deal is, you open up a brokerage account with them.  You deposit whatever funds you want, there is no minimum or penalties or fees of any kind.  When I want some cash, I just go to my Thai bank's ATM and withdraw whatever funds I want using my Charles Schwab debit card.  The bank machine spits out my money and charges me a couple hundred baht....which Schwab remunerates me for as a deposit in my Schwab account.  Done that dozens of times.  Easy and sweet.

Thailand vaccinating their own population first before shipping to countries like Indonesia who have a major covid problem is beyond criminal. They should hang their heads in shame

By logical extension, your ¨others first¨ philosophy implies you are hereby volunteering to be the last person on earth to be vaccinated.

God bless your generous heart.  We´ll miss you!

TripAdvisor slaps warning on Thailand's 'Sea View Resort & Spa' review page
    By The Thaiger

Be careful if you want to trash a Thai hotel in the land of fragile egos who use the handy tools of eager lawyers and draconian libel laws.

Now TripAdvisor, the review website everyone loves to hate, is warning potential travellers to a particular Thai hotel that they could face severe consequences for sharing negative opinions about their experience.

One visitor, Wesley Barnes from the US, was arrested after he waxed lyrical in his opinions about poor service at the particular establishment. Mr. Barnes was freed and eventually apologised in a settlement between him and the hotel. But TripAdvisor slapped this notice on the hotel’s listing…

Just in case you are warming up your fingers for a quick critique, this listing for the Sea View Resort & Spa in Koh Chang now includes a blatant warning.

“The reviewer spent time in jail as a result.”

Management at the hotel made an official complaint to the local police about the critique at the time. Mr. Barnes’ review strayed somewhat from the usual commentary about dirty bathrooms and cold soup to include “modern day slavery”. The resort’s management claimed that it had first tried to reach Mr. Barnes directly to “resolve the matter”, but took legal action because other reviews had been posted across different platforms, a few weeks apart.

At the time he was facing 2 years in a Thai prison after posting his negative online reviews about the Sea View Resort & Spa. Barnes, who works in Thailand, reported that he was arrested at the time by immigration police and that his passport had been confiscated until the matter was resolved.

Mr. Barnes stayed at the resort in June and had a disagreement with restaurant staff who tried to charge a corkage fee for alcohol he had brought on to the premises. He also added later that he felt the hotel’s management “were aggressive”.

Koh Chang police confirmed that an official complaint had been filed and that Mr. Barnes was accused of causing “damage to the reputation of the hotel”, and of bickering with staff about the corkage fee.

After weeks of media attention, local and international, and 1000s of online comments over the matter, the resort agreed to drop the police complaint if Mr. Barnes apologised and could convinced TripAdvisor not to display a “red badge” on the hotel’s TripAdvisor listing, which “could harm its business”.

The hotel’s use of Thailand’s notoriously tough libel and defamation laws rattled TripAdvisor, which now displays a clear warning about negative reviews that could land you in jail as a result of criminal charges filed by the hotel’s management.

“The hotel may have been exercising its legal rights under local law, however, it is our role to inform you so you may take this into consideration when researching your travel plans.”

The hotel has issued a statement accusing Tripadvisor of breaking its part of the settlement that was reached with Wesley Barnes.

“We fail to understand how Tripadvisor going back on their word, and not being impartial, is helpful to any of the parties involved in this case,” the resort’s manage responded in a statement to the NY Times.

By the way, if you want to visit the Sea View Resort and Spa Koh Chang in the middle of December, we randomly chose a date on Bookings.com and found a room for 2,900 baht a night. Have a great time, but don’t argue about the corkage!

I guess I've (and wife - Thai Issan) have decided to move to Thai Isaan and farm and build a house in a handful of years. She has land there given by her father. We met 5 years ago, Married 2.5 years ago, living in USA. I've been to Thailand 4 times, 4 weeks at a time. 2 weeks this coming April.

Looking forward to the farming life of fast-growing stuff, our own chickens/ducks. Selling fish to local shops. Just slap a house down, small pool, live in a peaceful, quiet area, live a different life.

Suspect my career and job will go away next year, wife will keep working for a few years, then make the jump and at least move until I'm 65 then move back for awhile, maybe.

The heat bother me at times, but her lack of ability to garden in the northern climates are an issue. We have looked into SW USA.

The the other issue is the cost of healthcare in USA. Anyhoo, we plan to give it a shot. I'll retire early, she'll work, we'll keep the house for a few years, maybe come back for 6 months, fix it up and sell it.

Thailand has its tradeoffs, as does any SE country or rural area. Looking for a new life and change of pace and different scenery.

I've had many careers, worked in many jobs and many companies/corporations. This would be just a different challenge.

Yes, I will be over 50 (there already).

    Ideas? Thought?

Yes, I've saved 401k/IRA, nothing too grand, small pension, house we could cash out prett good. Back up cash plan, if needed.

Wife is a bit younger than I and a great woman and the prize of my life. I can be alone 99% of my time. I can keep busy alone 99% of the time (excluding wife's time).

His finances are much much more transparent than 45s but if you find something criminal on him, go for it!

Believe me, he will lose the election, and there will certainly be  extraordinary repercussions for much of the malfeasance and outright criminality that will be exposed.  Lots of it is an open book at this point, but just like in Germany about 90 years ago, a loudmouth, crude, unintelligent but good rabble rouser can accomplish surprisingly large consequences despite what good people would think possible.

That an international mob boss - which is exactly what Trump is, although he's totally compromised by bigger fish -can get away with it in plain sight in the USA....because the rot runs deep in the USA in general, and his puppet masters in the Kremlin pull all the strings......

It is not governance, it is a near total ransacking of everything good and sacred about America's experiment in democracy.

Even Putin may not be able to amass enough brain-attackers this time, like last time, Trump is doomed to fail.  When he does, he will face criminal charges for many evil things....and he will be humbled and jailed and shown to the world as the criminal clown who swindled democracy.

The authorities are stupid. We retired expats are providing the bulk of funding for the country right now.

Is this really true/accurate?  I know there's a bloody wave of Brits, Americans, and others residing here, but "the bulk of funding"???  Can anyone please elucidate the rest of us - what are the numbers?  I hear this claim often online and suspect it's the lie that if repeated enough is treated as truth.  Lots of money?  Sure, no doubt.  THE BULK OF FUNDING FOR THE COUNTRY?????   Facts, please, that's all I ask.

  9. I've had a fair bit of experience on this subject.

I have the irony of being in good health for someone my age (72), but that good health is partly because of taking good care (diet, exercise) - And - taking about 10 different meds daily.

I was going back to the USA every 6 months or so and would gather Veterans Administration meds (not free, but cheap by US standards) and cart them back to LOS.   Then, between needing to be here with my Thai family and the Virus thing,  that avenue has been closed.  Sister in California could mail them. Did I say my chicken<deleted> timid sister?  Yeah, that's the one.  And despite the fact it's against the law in US  to ship meds, it is almost never enforced.  They have to focus on the world drug trade, not some retiree with a need for a small package of heart meds.  So, the first thing is, if you can acquire your meds via mail from "home", find a compatriot to help send them to you.  You will not be hunted like Pablo Escobar.

Even if they opened it, they have much bigger fish to fry, and they are a bit behind that action.  Small time pensioners getting prescription heart meds, etc., would not be worth their time even if they did open a package, which they almost certainly won't, unless it's reeking of ganja.

I've also used Indian drug companies four times, and everything was straightforward, honest, relatively prompt, the meds appeared and proved to be the genuine article, all OK.  Prices very good.  Only drawback, the transfer of money.  Some of the money transfer websites I've used before have been "under the weather" and incommunicado.

My experience with the larger pharmacies here in Korat has been positive.  But though I'm not bereft of funds, I try to fill from other places, as it's hit and miss, some like my Pradaxa, are generally available but amazingly expensive (I think made in Switzerland ) - and billing at their rates, not the "Thai discount".

Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but good luck, lads, stay safe, and keep well!
