Depends on what you mean by "they."  Regular papaer drugstore masks are believed to have very limited value in preventing exposure to airborne viruses. But N95 type respirator masks can be very effective.

Since current evidences led us to believe that 2019-nCoV spread via droplet not airborne (this could change as new information arises), paper drugstore masks is far from useless.

  2. virus is small but it cannot travel by itself.

virus always comes with droplet which travel for meters after someone sneeze or cough

N95 is fine IF you wear it correctly. If you didn't wear N95 correctly it's like you are not wearing anything. (air should come through the mask not around the edge)

regular surgical mask (green one or blue one, for example) is also decent to prevent from droplet.

So, in short, any mask is fine if you wear it correctly.

  3. If someone is in an emergency state and was admitted to any government hospital the 30 baht would have cover most if not all of the expense. (that exceed 30000 baht of course if it was a motor vehicle related accident)

It would have been an issue only if the son was admitted to a private hospital.

He didn't have to be transferred to the hospital in Bangkok (1000 km-ish). He just have to be transferred to some capable government hospital in the area.

  4. "unconscious and in a critical state." from "extensive binge" is rarely a true emergency that need intensive care for 10 days

He may have been admitted and intubated in the nearest hospital and be transferred to government hospital immediately and the bill would have been covered by the "emergency scheme" (free for first 72 hr anywhere but only for life-threatening condition)

But if the families denied transfer, they have to pay in full. The critical condition is virtually gone after the patient was intubated.

  5. vaccines provided by government hospital are decent but you can get more vaccines in private hospital

these are optional vaccine that one could get from private hospital or clinic

(the prices is according to some private pediatrician clinic in my town)

    - "fever-less" version of six diseases combined vaccine ("fever-ish" version provided by government) ; 1800-2000 THB per dose

    - pneumococcal vaccine (or IPD) (or PCV) 1800-3000 THB per dose

    - Rota vaccine 1000-1500 THB per dose

so 7000 THB is on the (very) high side of the prices,  but not inconcievable

  6. if you plan to stay in Thailand for long time ( e.g. longer than few months ). please please consider have a visit with doctors in some hospital with spirometer. there are alway some chances that you may have to increase or decrease to dosage of inhale steroid.
