  1. I am a single guy with no children stuck outside of Thailand.  I have a non immigrant OA visa (retirement) and my re-entry permit expires mid February 2021.

I would like to get back to Thailand this year before the UK winter starts.  I would be grateful for peoples views - should I hold on in the hope that the Thai Government will extend the groups of people being allowed to return to include people in my position.  Alternatively should I now start applying for an Elite Visa and try to get back that way - fortunately I can cover all of the various costs.  I would prefer to return on my existing visa but I will pay for the Elite Visa if it is the only way to get back to Thailand and my partner.

Thank you in advance for all constructive contributions.

  2. A number of people are asking who will pay these prices.  I guess anyone who flies Business or First would not bat an eyelid at these prices.  Indeed some of those people may only be willing to consider booking at the top end of this list in any situation.  Remember there are a lot of rich farangs who like Thailand   I have a number of friends who are very well off but fly economy as they think the additional cost of Business is not worth it; but if this is what they have to pay to get back they will just get the credit card out.   Surprise surprise those who can afford to pay extra to get back will be at the front of the queue.  The one good point is that if these hotels can make significant profits they will obviously want to expand there capacity in this higher end sector.  Keep in mind just how many top end hotels are closed and not making profits for their owners.  Those hotel groups are probably in a much better position to put pressure on the right people to get more repatriation flights flying and increase the groups of people who can enter Thailand and therefore make more money from.  Don't knock it it is just business and it might get things moving faster for the rest of us who are prepared to put up with the quarantine.

Come on...you really don’t know why Thailand isn’t on the list?

It is because travel corridors/bubbles require reciprocal agreement.

Thailand refused to agree to reciprocal travel rights for travelers from the UK, so game off.

Not sure about that.  I just had a quick check of the list.  As far as I know Australia and New Zealand will not let people from the UK visit their countries but they are on the list of countries who's citizens can visit the UK.

Well it seems the UK Government don’t trust of believe the death figures in Thailand also, why? Well travelling from Thailand to the UK your are STILL required to do 2 weeks quarantine...  Vietnam is trusted... oh dear Thailand, what went wrong ...

For all of the UK's failings it's scientists/doctors still carry some weight.  They will have been heavily involved in drawing up this list.  Countries like Vietnam, South Korea and Japan will take not that they have been included but Thailand excluded.  I can't see this helping Thailand get its abridges in place with other low risk Asian countries.

  5. With all of the empty hotels and airplanes I just don't understand why the Thai Government have not by now seriously ramped up their capacity to allow people to come to Thailand and do two weeks quarantine at their own expense in a suitable hotel.   Clearly not many tourists would opt for this but many others with long term visas would.  It would create income for the hotels and airlines.  It would also allow those non Thais who want to come back to Thailand and spend foreign currency to do so without any possible risk in terms of the virus.  This would be a clear win win.  I can't make up my mind if the Thai Governments position is one of incompetence or xenophobia.

  6. Well so much for consensual policing designed to serve the community.  For quite some time I thought that the Police, Immigration Service etc. were just clumsy and a bit out of touch.  I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that their behaviour is driven by arrogance and xenophobia; particularly in respect of farangs.   Who do they think will fund their existence if the foreigners go elsewhere.   I have a Thai partner and so I will tolerate how things are for now.  If my relationship broke down then I would certainly look seriously at relocating to another SE Asian country.  It is very sad as I have such fond memories of the Land of Smiles I fell in love with over 30 years ago.

  7. I wish my countries finances were as sound as Thailand's.   My country like so many western countries continues to increase the overall level of debt even thought we know that our demographics very clearly show that we are an ageing population i.e. fewer young people of working age in future to shoulder the growing debt burden and pay the additional retirement pensions.  And then people wonder why the Baht keeps appreciating.

I can’t believe I’m actually saying it , but as I am from the U.K and can’t see us ever becoming a non high risk country, (we eased lockdown today despite still having 8,000 infections a day) I actually hope thailand make me quarantine rather than ban me entirely.

What a mess the U.K. government have made and are making ...

Hi Herby.  Where did you get the 8,000 figure from.  The latest figure issued by the UK Government today is 1,887 new people recorded as bring infected.  I agree not good but on an improving trend and way better than 8,000.

  9. Long article in Financial Times (UK Edition 16 May) by their Bangkok Bureau Chief regarding Thailand restarting its tourism industry.  Can't post a link as it is subscription.  Based on what sounded like informed sources the Thai government has a 3 stage plan.  1 - get domestic tourism started.  2 - within a few months open up to other Asian nations who have the virus under control which includes China.  3- towards the end of the year open up to Europe and North America.  No mention of having to quarantine on arrival. We will see.

  10. UK Government Ministers now talking about introducing two weeks quarantine as part of the next stage of the fight against the Covid 19 - same as Thailand already has.  Until we have a vaccine I think quarantine could become normal across the world.  If correct then we will see a resumption of flights but at a very significantly reduced frequency.  Some people, like me, would be willing to accept two weeks quarantine for what they considered absolutely essential flights but the Tourism Industry would be all but dead.

A re-entry permit does no allow you to stay in the country. It only keeps your permit to stay valid it was issued for when you enter the country.

It appears you will need get a new re-entry permit before you leave the country since it will be expired when you enter the country.

Thanks ubonjoe.  Sorry if I was not clear.  I want to leave Thailand and when I re-enter Thailand begin afresh my visa application.

I just was not sure if I had to have my re-entry permit transferred from my old to my new passport.  I would prefer not to bother but I don't want problems with the immigration people when I am leaving Thailand.
