  1. In a recent controversial development on Koh Tao Island, a villa constructed without necessary permissions in a resort named Cape Shark Villas, has been instructed to cease operations by local authorities. An investigation is underway to check if other villas within the resort have conformed to obligatory construction permits. The villa under investigation is strategically perched on a rocky ledge, providing direct access to the clear waters of the island’s southern coast. It belongs to Cape Shark Villas, an upscale resort that encompasses more than 30 pool villas on its hilltop estate. Unfolding over 48 square metres and standing one storey tall, the villa—coined “hideaway villa”—came into the spotlight following an anonymous complaint that was submitted to the Facebook page of a provincial anti-corruption community. The complaint called into question the legality of the villa’s existence. Witchawut Jinto, the governor of Surat Thani, stressed the fact that every part of the picturesque Koh Tao island is under the jurisdiction of the Treasury Department. He urged all concerned entities to probe into the issue and determine if the hideaway villa was constructed with valid permission or if it even holds the legal right to exist as a resort in the first place. 3. A thorough investigation has been initiated by the Royal Thai Navy after a social media page reported some alleged discrepancies in a recent purchase of armoured vehicles totalling over 440 million baht (US$12,480,000). The public announcement about the investigation came yesterday when Admiral Pokkrong Monthatphalin, the navy spokesman, stated that the navy commander, Choengchai Chomchoengpaet, had ordered a probe after an accusation made by the Facebook page, CSI LA. The social media post alleged that certain navy personnel demanded a kickback totalling 15% from the supplier of the vehicles. Admiral Pokkrong confirmed that the navy has a project that aims to procure seven 8×8 wheeled armoured personnel carriers. These are to be manufactured by Chaiseri Metal & Rubber Co and carry a price tag of 448 million baht (US$12,700,000). The project fund has been allocated from the fiscal year 2023, starting from October the previous year and will end on September 30 this year. The supplier is required to deliver the purchased vehicles within a timeframe of 270 days. The request for approval for the procurement of these vehicles is pending with the Defence Ministry, clarified Admiral Pokkrong. The procurement has undergone rigorous scrutiny by various authorities, such as the Anti-Corruption Cooperation Committee for state procurement, and was even supervised by an independent observation panel. 11. King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, alongside Chulalongkorn University (CU), yesterday refuted allegations of conducting “rejuvenating DNA” trials on human subjects following an individual’s claim to have undergone such treatment at their facilities. In a joint statement, both institutions clarified that the pioneering rejuvenating DNA, developed by CU’s Faculty of Medicine specialist team under the RED-GEMs (REjuvenating DNA by GEnomic Stability Molecules) project, has not undergone testing on human beings thus far. The innovative RED-GEMs treatment, according to laboratory investigations, has the potential to reverse the ageing process in animals. The team behind the venture anticipates that this revolutionary treatment could address a range of age-related diseases and conditions, potentially injecting a degree of youthfulness back into gradually ageing societies. 15. Nang Loeng school fire drill turns fatal, professor postulates cause of explosion By Samantha Rose PHOTO: Sanook On a tragic day, a notable secondary school in the Nang Loeng neighbourhood experienced a devastating explosion. The gas cylinder explosion incident resulted in the loss of a student’s life and injured many. The school had invited fire-fighting officials to conduct a fire drill for students. The explosion happened when the officials opened a 20-kilogram gas cylinder to demonstrate basic fire extinguishing methods. The escaping gas caused the deadly explosion, catapulting the deceased more than ten metres away. The official serving as the instructor also sustained injuries. Footage of the terrifying moment when the fire extinguisher cylinder exploded during a fire drill, prompting screams from students, was shared and garnered widespread attention. Subsequently, Jetsada Denduangboriphan, a biology teacher from Chulalongkorn University, made a post on his Facebook Page ‘Oh, I see by Ajarn Jess.’ Suggesting a possible cause for the explosion, he offered some hypotheses. It is likely that the cylinder in question was refilled with gas and left exposed under the sun for an extended period, resulting in an increased temperature which caused high-pressure expansion, eventually leading to the explosion as there was no safety valve installed. 17. A 15 year old Thai poverty girl finds herself in the challenging role of becoming the breadwinner of a family of three, following a family accident that resulted in their dwelling at a temple’s land. The girl, her grandmother, and her 8 year old sister, who is suffering from anaemia, are now living in a makeshift home in the temple premises, where the structure is on the verge of falling apart, and they’re obliged to shower out in the open. Yesterday reporters were alerted to the situation of the schoolgirl and her family living in destitution on the land of Ang Sila Temple in Nong Ya Plong district, Phetchaburi. The girl, known as Gib, has displayed incredible determination amid her hardship, working as a boat peddler selling items to support her grandmother and sister. The makeshift home in which they reside is an elevated little shack constructed with bamboo and galvanised tin sheets. Rather alarmingly, their bathing area is just a partially-covered open spot, and for using the toilet, they are required to walk approximately 200 metres away from their dwelling place. The young girl, along with her sister, were left with their grandmother at the age of three months after their parents separated leaving them in the care of their 50 year old grandmother. Their troubled family history grew even more convoluted when their grandmother remarried and moved the family to her new husband’s house in front of Ang Sila Temple. by Nattapong Westwood PHOTO: KhaoSod Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thai-teenagers-resilience-shines-in-faced-hardships-peddling-to-provide-for-family-after-eviction-from-home -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 19. In a baffling incident that took place early yesterday, a 19 year old intern was found injured in a car park, having mysteriously fallen from a six-storey building. The young man was diagnostically undressed and bore injuries across his body. Rescuers from the Thamma Ratsamee Maneerat Foundation and a medical team from Chonburi Hospital found the man lying on the bonnet of a damaged Toyota Yaris. His fall appeared to have caused extensive damage to the car’s front glass. The intern, with the assumed name of ‘A’, was unable to answer any inquiries due to his condition. Initial medical assistance was provided at the scene before he was urgently transported to Chonburi Hospital. In the young man’s room on the sixth floor, an open balcony area showed signs, along with a pile of faecal matter and a plate, which suggests he may have fallen from there. The dormitory supervisor, Natthacha Suwannaphan, 21 years old, revealed that ‘A’ had recently moved in with two other friends. They all were trainees at a vocational college in Lampang. It’s still unclear what led to ‘A’s fall, as Natthacha claimed she had only heard a loud noise but had no other insight into the incident. by Nattapong Westwood PHOTO: KhaoSod Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/teenage-trainee-injured-in-mysterious-fall-from-six-storey-building-enigmatic-circumstances-leave-many-questions-unanswered -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
