  1. Sanook Thai Caption: The cause of the flood Officials in Sukhumvit Soi 39 have found the reason for the persistent flooding in the soi. Under the road they found a drain completely plugged by a fatberg - a hard substance that forms from all manner of household waste, reported Sanook. Picture: Sannok It took four men to shift it and then clear the surrounding gunk. But when it was all extracted it measurably improved the rate at which water was draining. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 3. Daily News Thai Caption: That's not awfully polite dear chap Daily News reported that netizens were commenting in droves after a cabby's less than polite signs hit the internet. One draped over a front seat for rear passengers said: Haam (d)aek aharn bon rot - the "d" sound was taken out by the media. It gives the sentence the tone of "no stuffing your face in my cab". Then came the brackets: (It stinks) Then the caveat: Beverages are OK!! Picture: Daily News Another sign said that any kind of petting including groping was a no-no in his cab. There was a spiritual lady taking care of that. This sign used the pronoun "goo" that ASEAN NOW is reliably informed is rather fruity. Most netizens said they were not really offended by the language but it doesn't look good. Cabbies should defer to the public, doff their caps and live up to their erstwhile image and name always used in the Thai press, namely chauffeurs. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 5. Daily News Thai Caption: Fake police con Daily News reported that a Thai cook by the name of Pawornwan, 49, went to file a report with the Bang Yai police. She said that she was the victim of a call center fraud. She transferred tens of thousands of baht from several accounts thinking she was complying with police requests. The call had started by someone pretending to be from the bank saying ominously that her account was mixed up in a money laundering case. She soon found herself talking to a police officer. The best thing for her would have been to put the phone down and get on with her day. But drawn into the confidence trick she dug a deeper and deeper hole until she was left not with 50,000 baht in the bank.... But with 200. She had even pawned one baht weight of gold and sent the money from that. ASEAN NOW urges our readers to immediately put down the phone when receiving calls saying that you are named in a drugs or money laundering case. It's a scam designed to frighten. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 7. Daily News Thai Caption: Looking in the face - Pulling out a gun Daily News reported on a Facebook post on behalf of a victim of crime in the Nonthaburi area. A man called Nonthakiat, aged 30, was riding a motorcycle on his way home when two men, the driver in helmet, the pillion passenger without, pulled up alongside. An argument followed in which the men took exception that the victim was glancing in their direction. Insults were traded. As Nonthakiat pulled away from the lights on green the two men drew up alongside and the pillion passenger aimed a gun at his head. He raced to Pak Kret police station after this. He urged the men to give themselves up so that they might get a more lenient sentence. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The deliberation is the 2nd meeting in as many weeks. The court is looking at the various clauses of the constitution in order to ascertain whether the 2014 coup leader Gen. Prayut is in any breach of the constitution. The opposition filed a petition to say that Gen. Prayut has already completed the 8-year term limit set forth by the 2017 charter. 11. A Thai husband who doused his ex in acid outside a Don Muang beauty salon has been arrested. Somprasong Nadon turned himself in to the custody of the police in Pak Thong Chai, Nakhon Ratchasima. He was taken back to Don Mueang where he told investigators that the couple had three kids and one from a previous relationship. He outlined a relationship spiralling from one crisis to another until they split. He said he only wanted to disfigure his ex, so that she couldn't remarry. He appealed to the victim - still in hospital with acid burns to her face - to have him back so they could play happy families once again, reported Thai Rath. He even got in a dig about his ex's own allegedly adulterous behavior, callously saying he'd forgive her. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 12. Cabinet approves energy pricing measures by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet approved two measures to help mitigate the energy crisis, covering diesel and electricity, targeting primarily lower-income earners. 13. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet approved two measures to help mitigate the energy crisis, covering diesel and electricity, targeting primarily lower-income earners. The Cabinet in a weekly meeting approved a set of mitigating measures for the energy crisis, including special electricity rates and an extension of the special excise tax rate for diesel. Proposed by the Ministry of Energy, a special electricity rate scheme will be offered to households based on their electricity consumption. Households consuming up to 300 electricity units per month will be eligible for a 0.92 baht per unit discount. Households with higher electricity consumption of up to 500 units per month will receive discounts for the Ft tariff based on their consumption rate, namely a 75% or 0.515 baht per unit discount for households consuming 301-350 units per month, a 45% or 0.309 baht discount for households consuming 351-400 units per month, and a 15% or 0.103 baht per unit discount for households consuming 401-500 units per month. These reduced electricity rates will be provided for 4 months from September to December this year. Some 9.13 billion baht of government funding is expected to be used to help around 21.46 million people. Other campaigns approved by the Cabinet include the 2-month extension for the current 5 baht diesel oil excise tax, now valid until 20 November, and a 6-month excise tax waiver for B0 diesel for electricity generation, valid until 15 March 2023. These campaigns are expected to help mitigate the impacts faced by the general public and businesses amidst the energy crisis. The excise tax schemes alone are expected to cost the Excise Department a 20 billion baht revenue loss. 17. by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - The acting prime minister has viewed an exhibit on Guiness World Records’ granting of the world’s longest piece of petrified wood title to a specimen in Tak province. Hopes are now pinned on the specimen enabling Tak to become a world-class geological tourism destination. Ahead Cabinet meeting, acting prime minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon viewed an exhibit on the world’s longest petrified wood specimen. The specimen was discovered in the area that will soon become Doi Soi Malai-Mai Klai Pen Hin National Park in Tak province. At 69.7 meters, it is the longest petrified wood specimen in the world, as certified by Guiness World Records (GWR). The environment ministry and the Geological Society of Thailand held a ceremony to acknowledge the new world record on July 8. The agencies now aim to elevate the petrified wood site to a world-class geological tourism destination. On this occasion, Gen. Prawit inquired about the discovery of the specimen and the process involved in wood petrification. He also urged everybody to help conserve this geological heritage site and treat it as a national treasure. Doing so would keep the site intact so the public and Thailand’s youths can keep learning from it. The previous world record for petrified wood belonged to a specimen discovered in Xinjiang, China. That specimen is a 38-meter-long piece of petrified wood. Thailand’s specimen is almost 70 meters long and has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest piece of petrified wood. 21. Picture: 77kaoded A 63 year old motorcycle taxi rider called Subin Waitook got far less than he bargained for after agreeing to take a farang to Central Bang Na. The agreed fee was 300 baht but when they got there the foreigner changed the goalposts and said they wanted to be taken back to Bearing BTS. Expecting to be paid a newly agreed 450 baht Subin held out his hand. Instead of Thai money the foreigner handed him what he thought was a 20 Euro coin. That would more than cover the journey, thought Subin as the foreigner hurriedly went up the BTS staircase and out of sight. Picture: 77kaoded Subin went back to the rank as proud as Punch only to get the sucker punch when he inquired of a buddy how much the coin was really worth. He was informed that he had been a bit of a plonker. The coin was a 20 cent coin making his windfall worth not 700+ baht but precisely 7.36 baht at yesterday's rates. Not surprisingly the "win" advised people to only accept fares in baht: "How are we to know what foreign money is worth?", he lamented. Picture: 77kaoded Before relating another tale of woe as to how a separate farang had asked him to take her to Robinson's from her hotel, didn't pay, asked to be taken back, then only paid 70 baht rather than double for the round trip, reported 77kaoded. Now he has the picture of a 20 cent Euro coin on his phone for posterity. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
