  1. By Natthaphon Sangpolsit BANGKOK (NNT) - A campaign to provide treatment to people suffering from the post-Covid-19 syndrome, or "Long Covid," has been initiated by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DoTTAM). A mobile unit was launched in Lampang province on Wednesday to offer assistance to Long Covid patients using Thai traditional herbs. The treatment will be provided to the public free of charge. According to the department’s director-general Dr. Thiti Sawaengtham, at least 400,000 people in the country are experiencing post-Covid-19 syndrome which could happen after a patient has been cured of the virus after one month. Patients will experience symptoms such as stress, fatigue, insomnia, appetite loss, coughing despite the fact that their lungs have already recovered from the virus, with these conditions remaining up to six months. Dr. Thiti said that herbal and modern treatments can help cure these problems. Many herbal formulas exist that are useful in alleviating these symptoms, such as medicine using cannabis oil as a foundation ingredient, which can counteract sleepiness and loss of appetite. He advised patients to see traditional and alternative medicine specialists because some herbal treatments require a prescription, and patients may exhibit a combination of symptoms that require a diagnosis. The director-general urged Long Covid patients to contact nearby DoTTAM clinics or public hospitals for treatment. The department also offers an online consultant service via Line application and provides medicine delivery for patients as well. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-01-20 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 3. The first meeting this year of the House of Representatives suffered a setback yesterday (Wednesday) when it was abruptly adjourned due to the lack of a quorum. The meeting began in the morning and lasted until, in the early evening, a party-list MP of the Tairaktham party stood up and asked Deputy House Speaker Suchart Tancharoen, who was chairing the meeting, to conduct a head count of MPs present in the chamber before the deliberation of a government-sponsored loan bill for educational purposes and four related bills of the opposition parties, noting that the bills are important and that sufficient MPs were present to make a quorum. Only 227 MPs were counted as being present in the chamber, which was ten short of half of the existing 473 House members required for a quorum. Suchart immediately adjourned the meeting. 7. By Erich Parpart The opening of the Kunming-Vientiane high speed rail network could bring opportunity to Thailand’s North East but government negotiators must be wary of pitfalls and problems should they expose the region to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Thailand should be especially vigilant of China’s non-tariff barriers that could impair Thailand’s ability to export through the rail line. Opportunity abound but caution necessary Pavida Pananond, an Associate Professor of International Business at Thammasat University, said that the recently opened Kunming-Vientiane railway could provide many development opportunities for Thailand’s northeast and become a gateway for the country to join this regional rail network. 8. Terrible school lunch drama: Director blames staff not getting along - in reality kids are well fed Picture: Sanook A school in Phetchaburi responded after damning pictures of their lunch appeared on the "Maa Fao Baan" (guard dog) page online. 9. Picture: Sanook A school in Phetchaburi responded after damning pictures of their lunch appeared on the "Maa Fao Baan" (guard dog) page online. The lunch at Wat Tha Haew school was really measly, or so it appeared. There was just some thin noodle soup and maybe a bit of potato. Some days there wasn't any fruit or sweet for the primary school kids, it was claimed. School director Datchanai Thangthong called an urgent meeting of his staff and found that the negative posts resulted from some of his teachers not getting along amicably reported Sanook. One P3 teacher called Sararin, 32, said the offending lunch was a P3 one. She explained that teachers had told the cook not to put too much on the plate so that children finished what they were given first. They could always ask for seconds if they were not full. Parents had been informed that the children were getting their "Five A Day" and that the picture on social media was at odds with reality. The children were all well fed, it was asserted. The director added that the picture in question showed the lunch before it was fully loaded on the dish. ASEAN NOW notes that scandals over officials at schools creaming off money from budgets for school dinners, leaving the children hungry, result in frequent stories in Thailand. There is no question of that happening in this case, of course. 11. By Arun Saronchai Prayut Chan-ocha’s position as prime minister seems more precarious and difficult as ever after news emerged late Wednesday that controversial and influential ex-minister Thammanat Prompao would be leaving the ruling party. The former coup-leader and army chief could see as many as 22 MPs leave the ruling coalition to join Thammanat’s new party and jeopardize his plans for economic recovery and his agenda for post-pandemic growth. According to sources inside the ruling Palang Pracharath Party, Thammanat took exception after being blamed for two by-election losses in the south last Sunday.
