  2. by Gregers Møller Over two weeks have passed since 32-year-old Swedish influencer and Youtuber Lisa Anckarman suffered a sudden loss of vision in one eye, seizure-like symptoms, and speech difficulties and had to be admitted to hospital in Thailand. About the experience, Lisa Anckarman says, “It was absolutely awful. Henrik (her partner) and I thought I was going to die, so we cried a lot. I tried to say that I love him.” After undergoing a series of tests and a brain X-ray at the hospital in Phuket, Thailand, everything came fine. Many indications showed that symptoms were due to stress. 4. Picture: Sanook Violent CCTV footage from Muang district of Samut Prakan near Bangkok showed the moments when a man was attacked in broad daylight in the street and a woman was grabbed by the hair and driven away. It happened on the old railway tracks road in the Samrong Neua police jurisdiction at 2.30 pm yesterday. The footage showed several men get out of a white Honda and drag a male passenger from a black Honda Jazz after smashing the passenger window. Saphaporn, 25, was assaulted with fists and kicks and left lying in the road. His girlfriend - who had been driving the Jazz which is her car -was led away by the hair and taken away in the white car. Men from that car drove her vehicle away. The badly beaten and dazed man told Samrong Neua police who arrived on the scene that one of the men in the group that arrived was his girlfriend's ex, reported Sanook. He had been playing on his phone and didn't notice much until his side window was smashed in. His girlfriend and the assailant had been together for three years until they broke up. Police radioed ahead but the assailants all got away. Investigations continue. Thai politics is notorious for its twists and turns, a rollercoaster of power plays that leaves voters constantly giddy and sometimes sickened. 2022 will be no different, with a host of crucial events and turning points that will shape the country’s future. Can the Prayut-led government survive its third year and remain until its term ends in 2023? Who will win Bangkok’s top job in the first gubernatorial election to be held in almost 10 years? Thai PBS World’s Political Desk examines five political highlights to look out for in the year ahead. Prayut’s tenure dispute Controversy over Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s term is a crucial issue this year, as it affects not just him but also his government. Prayut has been prime minister since August 2014, taking over a few months after leading a military coup that ousted an elected government in May that year. Now, nearing almost eight years in office, a legal question has arisen over Prayut’s position. The 2017 Constitution stipulates that “the prime minister shall not hold office for more than eight years in total, whether or not consecutively”. (Biriyani and grilled chicken Halal shows in the photo) Thailand has long been known as the kitchen of the world thanks to its abundant natural resources and tasty cuisine and now it is achieving global fame in another culinary category – the halal food industry. With strong government support and innovations in the e-commerce and food industries, the potential to grow is strong. The global halal food market is expected to reach US$ 2,043.20 billion by the end of 2027, according to Coherent Market Insights. The growth is mainly driven by the increasing number of Muslim populations who require their diet to comply with their religion and the increasing acceptance of halal food among non-Muslims. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Muslims are expected to comprise over a quarter of the global population by 2030. There are approximately 2 billion Muslims around the world at present, making up about 25 percent of the total world’s population. Of that, around 3.2 million Muslims are living in Thailand. New Laos-China high-speed rail offers Thailand excellent freight opportunities File photo After just one month the new Laos to China high-speed train is not only proving a success with passengers, but is also providing a reliable and fast route for freight as well. 14. File photo After just one month the new Laos to China high-speed train is not only proving a success with passengers, but is also providing a reliable and fast route for freight as well. The first cargo train of the China-Laos Railway bound for China began on December 3rd, 2021, with a cargo of potash products manufactured by a China-Lao joint venture named Sino-Agri International Potash Company. The 1,035-kilometer electrified passenger and cargo railway, connecting Kunming in southwest China's Yunnan Province with the Lao capital Vientiane, fully adopts Chinese technical standards and consists of two sections. Construction of the section in Laos from the border town of Boten to Vientiane started in December 2016, and construction of the section in China from city of Yuxi to the border town of Mohan started in December 2015. Thailand Fruit Exports Thailand is now keen to negotiate with the Lao and Chinese governments for closer logistic and freight transport cooperation, through the Laos-China high-speed train project, in the aim of increasing fresh fruit exports. Speaking after visiting the customs checkpoint at the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai province and meeting with the northeastern private sectors and representatives of the Thai Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said the coordination and freight transportation cooperation, if achieved, would also help raise overall cross-border trade between Thailand and Laos, as well as China. In 2021 the Thailand-Laos border trade volume totaled THB200 billion, an increase of 12.58% from a year before. Of the total, exports from Thailand accounted for 112.437 billion baht, up 20.13% from 2020, resulting in a trade surplus worth thirty-one billion baht. Mr Jurin also pledged to make the best use of the Laos-China high-speed railway to transport more products. Apparently, China currently only allows the transportation of only goods related to ore, rubber, and cassava through the high-speed railway. "We would like to negotiate with the Chinese government to allow the transport of Thai fruits in the coming harvesting season between March and May this year," said Mr Jurin. The Thai government has formed a working panel, proposed by the Transport Ministry, to coordinate with transport authorities in Laos on plans to build a railway linking the two neighbours. This is part of a high-speed railway project linking Thailand's rail system with the Laos-China Railway, which connects Kunming in China's Yunnan province with Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Eventually, it is planned to connect the high-speed rail from China down to Singapore. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-01-11 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates Get your business in front of millions of customers who read ASEAN NOW with an interest in Thailand every month - email [email protected] for more information
  15. Are condominium security guards being vetted sufficiently before assignments? File photo for reference only After several recent attacks on tenants by security guards, many condominium residents have been left in fear. Full story:https://aseannow.com/topic/1246293-are-condominium-security-guards-being-vetted-sufficiently-before-assignments/
  16. File photo for reference only After several recent attacks on tenants by security guards, many condominium residents have been left in fear. As more people are having to work from home because of Covid-19, safety at condominiums must be prioritised. Working like this can be stressful, however, to have to also worry about safety is not acceptable. The two attacks, which were only days apart, have raised concerns about condominium security protection and the recruitment of guards, especially since one of the attackers was one. These two recent attacks on tenants, one of them fatal, in condominiums have set off alarm bells about safety in these buildings and the kind of people employed to protect them. Women fatally knifed Early on Boxing Day, a 23-year-old part-time warehouse worker was stabbed in her condominium in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan. Allegedly a male tenant, identified as Natthachai Art-samart, 31, admitted to police that he attacked the young woman with a knife as he tried to force his way into her room. She suffered a deep cut to her leg which bled heavily. She struggled in vain to get help and died due to blood loss outside the condominium’s lift. The killer said he intended to rape and steal from her, according to police. Then on January 4th Montri Yaikrathok, 41, a head security guard, raped a woman inside her room in a condominium in Phetkasem Soi 47 in Bang Kae district of Bangkok. Later, it emerged that checks by police confirmed he had been convicted of raping a minor in his home province of Sa Kaeo back in 2013. He had served a jail sentence and was then released from prison four years ago before landing a job as head of security at this condominium. After the January 4th rape, he fled but was apprehended in Sa Kaeo two days later. He admitted to having sexually assaulted the woman while under the influence of drugs. He has since been charged with rape and drug abuse. Major security concerns Many condominiums are currently fairly empty as local tenants have returned home, or overseas owners are unable to occupy their apartment due to travel restrictions. This leaves the remaining tenants very vulnerable to theft and attacks. Pol Maj Gen Rungroj Thakoonpunyasiri, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB), said changes to how security guards are recruited and how they go about their work were in order. He plans to propose to the MPB commissioner that all security guards be trained by police in basic security protection. Background checks to see if guards have criminal records are also vital. "We need to see these records and interview them to know who they are and what they are capable of," he said. "Most security guards are law-abiding. However, crooks may be hiding among them," Pol Maj Gen Rungroj said, adding security-guard training should be conducted by police in each province. Piyajet Meedech, a former army officer and director of security at the Sam Security Guards Company, said the Security Guard Business Act of 2015 bars anyone jailed for rape from ever obtaining a licence to work as a guard. According to Meedech, the security chief in the Phetkasem case should never have been employed in the first place. Perhaps he may have bribed someone to secure the job or was recruited before the law came into force when applicant background checks were lax. Condominium juristic persons should automatically hire only reputable security firms and ask local police to check a guard's background. That said it is hard to find staff due to the current pandemic and some staff are likely to be employed without full background checks. These two recent attacks have spurred many condominiums and apartments into ramping up internal security protection. Female tenants living alone are also strongly advised not to open their doors to strangers and immediately alert the office if they have safety fears.

  20. Picture: Naew Na The Royal Thai Navy has set up a committee to investigate a mysterious ghost ship that was found floating off the coast of southern Thailand. Authorities had tried to save the Fin Shul Yuan 2 that was taking on water and had no crew. They denied there was a deliberate intention of letting it sink. But that is what happened. Earlier reports suggested it sank about 28 nautical miles off Nakhon Sri Thammarat after it was originally detected about 100 miles from Songkhla. Picture: Naew Na Naew Na reported that navy authorities are working on the assumption that the vessel was involved in illegal activity. High tech equipment will be used to scan the wreck in the hunt for more clues. There is no ship registered under this name but it could be a Chinese vessel with a similar name - the first name being Jin not Fin. A navy spokesman said that some food and trash was found aboard. Authorities in Singapore and the USA are being contacted to try to get to the bottom of the mystery.
