  1. By Nop Meechukhun Chonburi – Officials from the Chonburi Provincial Public Health were deployed to inspect venues in Pattaya that have been recorded as a previous ‘cluster’ with Covid-19 transmission yesterday night, January 8th, after the province reached the highest number of Covid-19 patients in the country. Dr. Apirat Katanyutanon, Chief of Chonburi Public Health, led the department to inspect the Pattaya area and encourage all venues to strictly comply with the government’s preventive measures and conduct ATK tests more frequently on customers and travellers before visiting as well as on employers and employees, to include any performers or musicians. Apirat told TPN reporters: “The venues must conduct an ATK (Rapid antigen kit) test for all customers before entering. Self-tests at home or “photos” of a negative test are no longer allowed because some of them may not present the latest results of the test. 5. A mysterious ship, believed to be a freighter, was found floating in the Gulf of Thailand, about 100 miles from the coast of Songkhla, on Wednesday night by a Thai Navy patrol boat, according to Vice Admiral Sunthorn Kamklai, commander of the Royal Thai Navy’s second fleet. Sailors on the patrol boat, Tor 113, boarded the ship and found no one on board, no cargo, anchor or electricity. The vessel has the name “Fin Shul Yuen” painted on its side, but the last digit of the registration number appears to have been deliberately erased. The ship is about 80 metres long and was taking in water when it was found. The Thai sailors used an electric pump on the patrol boat to pump water out of the mysterious ship, to prevent it from sinking and obstructing navigation in the area, but the operation had to be suspended due to rough seas, which could have led to damage to the patrol boat because it had to moor alongside the ship. On January 7, the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) added another 30 provinces to the Orange zone of control, increasing the number to 69 from Jan 9. What are the restrictions? Alert Level 4 allows stricter restrictions including a ban on restaurant dining and large gatherings, but the CCSA has so far only closed entertainment venues such as bars, pubs and karaoke joints. But the party has always insisted it is free from the influence of the wealthy ex-PM, who has been self-exiled overseas since fleeing a 2008 corruption conviction he claims was politically motivated. Officially, Thaksin is neither an executive nor even a member of Pheu Thai. In his Facebook post today, he said that RT-PCR tests in Thailand do not examine the S gene in the virus, which means that they cannot detect the presence of the Omicron variant. He said that reports of about 3,000 confirmed Omicron cases in Thailand do not reflect the real situation, as many cases were not tested using the required techniques.
