The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is a project conceived and launched by a law pushed by the junta government from 2016 to 2018. It is part of the wider Thailand 4.0 vision to develop Thailand into an added value, high tech and high-income country over the next fifteen to twenty years. It is part of the wider Thailand 4.0 vision to develop Thailand into an added value, high tech and high-income country over the next fifteen to twenty years. This week, Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha chaired a review by the agency tasked with oversight of the project as the government is expected to persevere with infrastructural investments and tax incentives for the scheme which is supported by both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The man directing Thailand’s flagship Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) investment initiative did not pull punches this week as he referred to the economic challenges facing the kingdom and the setbacks suffered by the three provinces at the centre of the initiative which, over the last few years, have seen a significant GDP reversal with over ฿170 billion in lost GDP for the area despite the government’s perseverance to bring the project to fruition as part of Thailand’s strategy to become a developed and high income economy by 2036 and wean itself off foreign tourism. By Panithan Onthaworn The Bank of Thailand (BoT) said on Monday it would prioritize economic stability over plans to tackle short-term inflation, as the country’s vital tourism sector is on the path of recovery. “It is not worth slowing the economy in order to reduce inflation,” Piti Disyatat, assistant-governor of the Monetary Policy Group, told an analysts meeting. Such plans to cope with inflation are increasing interest rates, he said. The Bank will be focusing on the stability of Thailand’s economic growth, yet inflation will remain a concern. 19. Photo from AFP The Omicron variant has now spread across the globe, with new cases surging in countries including Thailand. As of Sunday (Jan 9), Worldometer.com registered 15.28 million new COVID-19 cases in the past week, a rise of 51 percent from the previous 7-day period. Worldometer.com, which ranks among the most reliable compiler of global statistics, reported a spike in infections across the world, topped by the tiny Caribbean nation of Guadeloupe with a 332,000 percent rise. Worryingly, new COVID-19 infections have also soared in countries with a relatively high rate of vaccination. Japan, Israel, Australia, Singapore and Thailand have seen their caseloads surge – by 508, 250, 223, 114 and 81 percent respectively. India, where most of the population is believed to have built up antibodies either through jabs or infection, saw its caseload rise by 524 percent. History’s most infectious virus Far more transmissible than previous variants, Omicron has risen to become the world’s second-most contagious virus – closely behind measles. Omicron has an R number of 8 to 15, compared to 15-18 for measles, explains Prof Dr. Wasun Chanratita, director of Ramathibodi Hospital’s Centre for Medical Genomics. The R number refers to the average number of unvaccinated people infected by one case of a disease. The Delta variant, with an R number of 6.5-8, is far less transmissible than Omicron.
