  14. Picture: Sanook CCTV footage from the front of a shop on the Chiang Mai to Doi Saket road showed the moment a wheel came off the front of a pick-up. The front left wheel went at speed into a flower pot in a noodle shop but fortunately no one was hurt. Tawan, the owner of the footage, said that he normally parked in that place but hadn't on Saturday. The Mitsubishi pick-up was being driver by an employee of a "tent" - a place for second hand vehicles. He told Tawan that the pick-up had been put into a garage for a service and he was taking it on a test-drive before offering it for sale, reported Sanook. He reckoned that the mechanic had forgotten to tighten the nuts. The tent employee managed to control the pick-up and come to a safe stop within 100 meters of losing his wheel. 15. Muang Thong Thani trickster pays with 100Bt notes torn down the middle Picture: Sanook Sanook reporters went to investigate after a female trader and her mum fell foul of a nasty trickster. 16. Picture: Sanook Sanook reporters went to investigate after a female trader and her mum fell foul of a nasty trickster. Jutamas, 25, said she and her mum ran a "joke" (rice congee with egg) stall with a toast sideline out front of their shop. Jaruwan, 50 was on duty selling the toast when a man in red shorts, white shirt and black mask arrived to buy two pieces of toast at 10 baht a time. He paid with a one hundred baht note then said he'd come and pick up the toast in a minute. He then disappeared with the 80 baht change. But when Jutamas checked the till she realised that the note was in fact just half - it had been torn right down the middle. Its number was 3H9976288. She wasn't sure at first if it was deliberate but after posting on Facebook she was positive. Other traders in the MuangThong Thani area reported falling foul of the same guy in the same manner. He'd struck at a shop in the Cosmo gas station, with a garland seller and a fruit trader. Jutamas said she hadn't filed a police report as it was a small amount of money but she warned others to be on the lookout. In a reference to a famous pandemic campaign in which Thais just pay half called "khon la khreung" she said: "Don't go halves with us in this manner". 18. Picture: Sanook There is a proverb in Thai that is the equivalent of searching for a needle in a haystack - looking for a needle in the ocean. That might need to be changed to "looking for a ring in a waterfall" after what happened at a Thai national park over the last few days. Nit Phokul from Huay Khwang in Bangkok was on a visit to a fast moving waterfall in the Khlong Lan National Park in Kamphaengphet in the north west of Thailand at the end of last week when she slipped. A one karat gold ring with ten diamonds slipped off her finger and appeared to be lost for good. But freelance diver Peck Khanyok was allowed to search by park authorities and within 35 minutes found the ring using metal detection equipment. It was all smiles as Peck and a happy Nit posed for the cameras in pictures published by Sanook. 20. Picture: Thai Rath Thailand's government spokesman Thanakorn Wangbunkhongchana said there had been no cover up when it came to the spread of the pig virus known as African Swine Fever. The virus is prevalent at the moment in many countries especially in nations that border Thailand. Thanakorn defended Thai PM Prayuth Chan-ocha's track record in this matter saying that checks had been undertaken throughout the pig farm industry. Vaccinations had been carried out and established protocols had been followed by vets to ensure the safety of Thaland's huge pork industry. Thai authorities have repeatedly denied outbreaks of swine fever and have attributed most farm pig deaths to another viral disease called porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome. African swine fever is harmless to humans but fatal to pigs and there is no vaccine against it, suggest information available online. 21. Thai police in Omicron alert - crackdowns nationwide to stop spread of variant after PM's order Picture: Daily News Daily News reported that Thailand was finally getting tough with the Omicron variant with orders issued by the prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. 22. Picture: Daily News Daily News reported that Thailand was finally getting tough with the Omicron variant with orders issued by the prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. This comes more than a month after the emergence of the easily spread and fast spreading variant was identified in South Africa then swept through Europe and the US. Many have said Thailand was slow to react because of a lack of testing despite the fact that Omicron soon showed up in the kingdom. Now cases are surging in Thailand the Royal Thai Police has been instructed to ensure that Rule 9 of the emergency decree in particular is followed to the letter. This was contained in a Government Gazette announcement to be followed as of yesterday, January 9th. RTP spokesman Pol Col Krissana Patanacharoen said that chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk had instructed his deputies nationwide to make sure that everyone - especially businesses - were following established Covid-19 protocols. This will mean that the loophole that allowed bars and pubs to act as restaurants will be scrutinized and prosecutions for law breaking will follow. The serving of alcohol will be stopped in places and at times when it is illegal and vigilance in this matter will be a priority. Many establishments in Thailand have sought to open under SHA and SHA+ rules - these will be closely checked. 9 pm closing will be strictly enforced. Pubs, bars, massage places and the like will be closely checked to make sure there is no law breaking. ASEAN NOW notes that there was a certain amount of laissez-faire going on in Thailand especially in tourist areas like Pattaya, nightlife areas of Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. That attitude in the coming days is expected to end as law enforcement cracks down under established rules at least until the end of January. 23. Residents and visitors welcome Bangkok’s Benjakitti Park With the stress of working and living in big cities, a chance to enjoy a peaceful setting such as a public park is essential. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1246156-residents-and-visitors-welcome-bangkok’s-benjakitti-park/
  24. With the stress of working and living in big cities, a chance to enjoy a peaceful setting such as a public park is essential. New York has its Central Park; London has the massive Hyde Park and Bangkok now has Benjakitti Park to add to Lumpini park. A naturalistic public park has arrived in Bangkok, and it is not to be missed. Phase two of the naturalistic public park Benjakitti Park opened quietly last month, offering visitors a new and exciting experience from other public parks in the city. Much mor modern, minimalist, and naturalistic than say Lumpini, the Benjakitti Park includes a two-kilometer-long skywalk crisscrossing a peaceful country style view of wetlands surrounding with mounds of earth forming tiny islets. Great addition for joggers For health enthusiasts there is also a separate walking trail at ground level. Here the parks paths, both on the upper and lower levels, encourage you to keep walking and explore. They layout is quirky like a maze, almost making it fun to get lost. The Park has cleverly converted land which was formerly part of the Tobacco Authority of Thailand. Its entrance is from Ratchadaphisek Road, and one can see several high-rise buildings from all directions. If you are in the middle of the new park, which occupies over sixty-one rai excluding the final unfinished phase, you will not hear any traffic noises even though you are just a 15 to 20 minutes’ walk from BTS Asok station and Sukhumvit station of the MRT underground. Operated by Bangkok City Hall, the park includes some existing mature rain trees, younger teak trees, and many planted saplings of species found in the forests that would markedly make the place even greener and more picturesque within a few years. Now, sun lovers should visit the place during mid-afternoon for a good tan and more desolate environment. After 5pm, more visitors will arrive, and some joggers would make strolling on the skywalk a less Zen experience. Despite the Tadao Ando-esque use of bare concrete around the landscape architecture, the elevated walking path, which is over two meters wide and two-kilometer long, has no benches for park goers to sit, although there are some on the ground level. There is also a bike lane around the park for cyclists between 6am to 5.30pm. On the western end of the park, there is a large grass lawn surrounded by a half amphitheater, so hopefully there will be some music events to enjoy in the future. There are twelve levels of slope made of bare concrete where one could just sit and watch the views of nature, the skyline, and other people relaxing and playing frisbee. The Park is open daily from 05.00-21.00hrs. Hopefully, the park will inspire people to exercise, or just taken in some country in the middle of one of Asia’s busiest cities. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-01-10 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates Get your business in front of millions of customers who read ASEAN NOW with an interest in Thailand every month - email [email protected] for more information
