  13. Thailand Well-Prepared For New Wave, Says Minister Anutin By: Sirakij Pornbanggird BANGKOK (NNT) - Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said the country is well-prepared for the post-New Year Covid case surge. 14. By: Sirakij Pornbanggird BANGKOK (NNT) - Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said the country is well-prepared for the post-New Year Covid case surge. An effective screening system is in place at immigration and isolation facilities are ready. The Disease Control Department will ask the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to raise areas with significantly rising cases to ’orange’ zones. These zones will see stricter restrictions such as limitations on alcohol consumption. Meanwhile, to cope with ongoing infections, foreign visitor arrivals may be postponed until further notice. However, these measures must be thoroughly considered with economic implications and other factors taken into account. The minister stressed that it was important to focus on cases to be discovered in the next 7 - 10 days in order to evaluate the situation and introduce proper measures. Currently, Thailand’s public health system has enough medications, tools, workers, and beds to deal with the new wave. For Covid-19 treatments, according to the health ministry’s protocol, physicians will decide whether patients need to be admitted at a hospital or be isolated, either at home or at a community isolation facility. This is to help spare hospital beds for more severe cases. 16. Picture: Sanook A Thai woman called Ploy who had a secret relationship with a police lance corporal has gone to the metropolitan police requesting that he be arrested. This comes after a clip of the couple having sex was posted on Twitter, reported Sanook. The media published a picture of police and the wronged woman holding a brown envelope. The caption read: Reported to arrest policeman. Ploy met the cop on a dating site in May 2020 and despite the fact both of them had other partners chat soon developed into a sexual relationship. But after eight months she tried to end the liaison. But the cop wouldn't do that. So Ploy went to his superiors in the Pak Kret police and asked that disciplinary procedures be taken against him. The lance corporal heard about this and threatened her telling her to withdraw the complaint but she refused. In November of last year he then sent the sex clip - which Ploy said he had filmed without her knowing - to a friend and her sister and then Twitter. On Twitter the cop posted under her own avatar and included her phone number saying that she was available for sex. This resulted in her getting many phone calls and feeling threatened. Complaints to the Pak Kret police stalled and so yesterday she went to the met police to get them to take action. 17. Thais and Expats may be subject to large capital gains tax on their cryptocurrency trading File photo for reference only Taxing cryptocurrency profits must be at the top of most Revenue Departments across the World with the staggering profits made over the past couple of years. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1245872-thais-and-expats-may-be-subject-to-large-capital-gains-tax-on-their-cryptocurrency-trading/
  18. File photo for reference only Taxing cryptocurrency profits must be at the top of most Revenue Departments across the World with the staggering profits made over the past couple of years. Here in Thailand, the country’s Revenue Department is now discussing with digital asset exchanges on ways to collect withholding taxes on cryptocurrency profits. Department spokesperson Sommai Siriudomset said the move is intended to make trading more convenient. Cryptocurrency buyers currently have a duty to collect the 15% withholding tax from the profit gained by the sellers in every transaction. Of course, with huge debts mounting due to the collapse of the hospitality industry and the ongoing cost of managing the pandemic, the Revenue department is keen to explore ways of gathering the tax. Many people know that most tax agencies expect tax of some kind to be paid on cryptocurrencies -- and that tax agencies are actively looking for those who are evading taxes. There are, however, a few countries where cryptocurrencies are not taxed under some or all circumstances, notably for those who buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrencies -- where it is completely legal and state-sanctioned not to pay taxes on cryptocurrency investment gains. They include Germany, Portugal, Malta, and Switzerland in Europe and Singapore and Malaysia in Asia. Inorganic law Mrs. Sommai explained to the media that the Thai Revenue department is working to introduce an inorganic law to collect the 15% capital gains tax on the profits from cryptocurrency trading. They have the authority to collect taxes from cryptocurrency trading because profits from such activity can be considered assessable income under Section 40 of the Royal Decree amending Revenue Code No.19. She did however confirm that the department would calculate the tax from only profitable transactions, not losses. This means sellers must record all profitable transactions to determine which require withholding tax. The tax also covers Bitcoin mining transactions and the dividend or interest from cryptocurrency investment. Apparently, Bitcoin mining is considered the same as ore mining, Mrs. Sommai said. Therefore, any gains from Bitcoin mining are considered income from commercial, agricultural, and industrial operations, which are subject to the tax under Section 40 (8). However, Bitcoin miners may claim expenses incurred during the mining for a tax deduction. Dividends or interest gained from investment in cryptocurrencies are considered to be income under Section 40 (4) and are subject to tax. One trader, Sanjay Popli, who is the co-founder of Cryptomind, and owner of Merkle Capital, said that a large number of investors are still unsure about how the Revenue Department will calculate profits and losses from crypto trading. He added that it is extremely hard to actually track gains from cryptocurrencies as most crypto traders are speculators. Many usually keep the coins for very short periods, before selling to take profits. Many Thais and Expats across the country are sitting on huge gains from buying and selling bitcoins and will be watching what happens with interest. Until the Thai government makes clear its regulations on taxation, traders will just have to wait and be prepared to allow for some form of payments to the Revenue departments. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-01-07 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates Get your business in front of millions of customers who read ASEAN NOW with an interest in Thailand every month - email [email protected] for more information

  22. By Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - Infections caused by the Omicron variant of coronavirus are rising, in line with earlier predictions by health authorities who anticipated that the peak number of daily new cases in this wave of outbreaks may reach as high as 30,000 in the worst-case scenario. Meanwhile, there are now slightly more than 150,000 beds available at healthcare facilities nationwide. Based on data from the Ministry of Public Health, there were a total of 178,139 patient beds as of December 27. 13.7% or 24,372 of the beds were occupied, leaving 153,767 available. Beds are classified into 3 categories. There are 4,955 Tier 3 or ‘Red’ beds for critical patients, 60,928 Tier 2 or ‘Yellow’ beds for patients with moderate symptoms and those deemed especially vulnerable to Covid, and 112,256 Tier 1 or ‘Green’ beds for patients with mild symptoms. Authorities have indicated that the number of beds for Covid patients can be increased quickly if needed; the bed number had previously reached 200,000 at the peak of the previous wave. For patients with mild or no symptoms, the Ministry of Public Health will generally prescribe home isolation and provide the patients with medicines to keep them from developing severe symptoms. In Bangkok, a total of 25,345 beds have been prepared to accommodate patients who are unfit for home isolation. For the transportation of Covid patients, Bangkok City Hall’s Erawan ambulance service may be reached at hotline number 1669. City Hall is also facilitating drive-through Covid testing services at the Southern Bus Terminal in Taling Chan district and Victoria Gardens mall in Bang Khae district. ATK tests are available at all 11 hospitals operated by Bangkok City Hall. Health authorities have been urging people to get a third injection of the Covid vaccine 3-6 months after their second shot, to keep them from developing severe symptoms in the event of having contracted the coronavirus. Authorities also believe the booster dose is key to curbing the number of new infections. People in Bangkok can reserve their booster shots via the QueQ mobile application. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-01-07 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
