  3. Netizens furious with Anutin: "Maskless" minister holds New Year party after slamming Thai public as "selfish" Picture: Kapook Thai media Kapook reported on a house party at the home of Thailand's DPM and minister of public health Anutin Charnvirakul. Pictures of the party were posted on Instagram by the billionaire minister's own son Pek and there was barely a mask in sight. This came after the minister blamed some Thais for being selfish at new year and causing clusters of infections that saw cases rise by 3,000. Posters had a field day blaming the minister for "one rule for him, one rule for the plebs". One said sarcastically: "Yeh, thanks so much for teaching me. Now teach your son." They said he couldn't say it was just for a photo - nobody else behind him was wearing a mask either. The media made no comment as to whether the minister had done anything wrong in going without a face covering at a private party, notes ASEAN NOW. A new 2022-statistics show the nationality of these tourists who have entered the country between 1. January and 4. January. The statistic also shows how high the infection rate was among these travelers when they were tested in Thailand upon arrival. In the top 10 of the most visiting countries are both Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Surprisingly Sweden is number two on this list only surpassed by Russia. 1,633 tourists from Sweden have entered Thailand and of these visitors, 2.33% were found to be infected with Covid-19. Russia in the first place had 2,511 visitors. Meanwhile, it is also now considered likely that the proposed reopening of Thailand’s nightlife set for January 15th is off the cards as the government gets tougher with existing venues that are known to be flouting the law and which public officials strongly suspect are at the centre of rising Omicron case numbers. As the Omicron virus strain brews up a storm in Thailand with surging infections, the Thai government, this week, simply dismissed any prospect of reopening the kingdom to more foreign tourists under the more popular ‘Test and Go’ entry regime. This will see arrival numbers nosedive from January 10th which was the cut off point for those approved before the sudden suspension of the scheme on December 21st last. The rising and now unavoidable Omicron wave has seen Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul lash out at revellers in pubs and moves by the prime minister to tighten enforcement of regulations governing the sale of alcohol throughout the country. However, despite all this and amid a quickly changing environment as Omicron makes its presence felt in places such as Pattaya and Phuket, some tourism business owners are quietly thinking the unthinkable, that this new wave of the virus may turn out to be good news. AP Photo/ Gemunu Amarasinghe, File Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) Chairman Sanan Angubolkul disagrees with raising the COVID-19 alert level to the extent that business activities are locked down again, saying that such a decisive measure would drive the country backward. His remark came a day ahead of a meeting of the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), which will consider re-imposing lockdown restrictions after the Disease Control Department decided to raise the COVID-19 alert to Level 4, the second highest level, as new COVID-19 infections have been rising since the start of the year. Sanan pointed out that the situation is very different from last year, because most of the population are now vaccinated, with many fully inoculated. Last year, however, only a small number of people had received vaccine shots, which were also in short supply.
