They had been selling drugs to hiso's in the northern Thai city for the last year. The British man claimed he was doing nothing wrong - he said like Robin Hood he was taking from the rich and giving to the poor saying he had given a million baht to children and people suffering from Covid-19 during the pandemic. Mitech KW (name transliterated from Thai and possibly incorrect) and Siriporn S, 32, were arrested separately and charged with possession and dealing in drugs. Taken into evidence were three Ecstacy tablets, 86.2 grams of marijuana and 55.5 grams of cocaine. Seized were a Corolla Altis with Chiang Mai plates and a white Toyota van with Bangkok plates, plus 20 bank books showing a large quantity of money. The police had become aware that a foreign man and his DJ girlfriend were selling three kinds of drugs via a Line group they had set up for hiso party-goers in Chiang Mai. Their inquiries indicated that the couple lived together at a luxury house in the Sanpuloei area of Doi Saket. A sting was set up and money was transferred to buy 8,000 baht's worth of cocaine and three Ecstacy tabs. The drugs were delivered to a central hotel by Mitech in the van where he was promptly arrested. A search of his house led to the arrest of Siriporn and discovery of other drugs. Mitech is the owner of a company importing solar cells, reported Daily News who said that after he came to Thailand he fell in love with Siriporn. He loved to smoke ganja and observed that there was a gap in the market for cocaine. So through his company and paying in Bitcoin he imported the drug from Europe using an online shopping deal. He said he only sold to people aged 30+, no children. In one year of dealing he had made plenty of money and he wanted to be a modern day Robin Hood. He used the money to buy things for children and the locals suffering with the Covid-19 pandemic and had already donated 1 million baht. The media quoted him as saying that he thought this was acceptable behaviour and that he was doing a good thing. Both him and his girlfriend are now in custody. They will be facing a very long jail sentence in Thailand should they be found guilty in court, notes ASEAN NOW. 29,000 expats in Thailand register for vaccine using Expatvac website File Photo: REUTERS - for reference only More than 28,000 expats in Thailand have registered for a COVID-19 vaccine using the Ministry of Public Health’s newly launched vaccine registration portal. As of 6pm on Monday (Aug 2), a total of 28,788 expats had registered on the Expatvac platform following its launch on August 1, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Tanee Sangrat announced on Twitter. Of those, 22,653 were expats under the age of 60, with 6,135 people aged over 60 also registering. A further 1,916 people with underlying health conditions, along with 114 pregnant women also registered. In his tweet, Mr Tanaee said that vaccination appointment dates will likely be after August 10 or 11. Previously, Thailand's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said that 150,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, donated by the US government, would be allocated for foreigners in Thailand. And with less than 30,000 people having already registered to receive the vaccine, it would suggest there are still sufficient vaccines available. Picture: Daily News The penny has finally dropped for Thailand's billionaire tourism and sports minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan. He has had to admit that the raging pandemic in Thailand has dealt a hammer blow to his plans and that of the government to welcome millions of foreign tourists. The voices have been loud and clear online and in "letters to the editor" that his predictions and that of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) were pie in the sky nonsense. But he insisted they were going to happen nonetheless. Until now. And of course he is blaming the pandemic situation in Thailand that is worsening by the day. "Yes," he told Daily News. "We won't be seeing three million foreign tourists by the end of the year. "About 500,000 to 700,000 is the best we can hope for now". As far as the Phuket Sandbox predictions went, those too have gone out of the window though he expected the sandbox to press on regardless. "100,000 tourists in Phuket in three months will not be met," he admitted. "July went as we hoped but targets for August of 40,000 will not be happening. There will be about 15,000 - about the same as July". The first month of the sandbox saw 14,000 foreigners visit Phuket though many of these were returning expats or even Thais added to the figures, notes ASEAN NOW. Pipat told the media that if the situation in Bangkok does not improve by the last three months of the year many sporting events could be rescheduled to Phuket. These include golf, E-sports, the 7-a-side Asian Rugby championships and the King's Cup football. A big event planned by the TAT to mark the 17th anniversary of the Asian Tsunami planned for Boxing Day December 26th will also have to be reassessed. The TAT were hoping to attract many Scandinavians in particular to that. For now Pipat said that he was working with the interior ministry on coming up with some "Sky Blue Zones" where foreign tourism could take place. Green Chiretta (Fah Talai Jone) and certain other medicinal herbs are selling like hotcakes now that the public has realized they can help keep COVID-19 at bay. The Public Health Ministry recently endorsed Fah Talai Jone (also known as Andrographis paniculate) as a medication for mild symptoms of the viral disease. “Other herbs like fingerroot [krachai] can also be used to fight COVID-19 and boost immunity,” said Dr. Amporn Benjaponpithak, who serves as director-general of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM). Image: Daily News A Government Gazette announcement effective immediately forbids news outlets and internet users from spreading fake, damaging or scaremongering news likely to cause instability or trouble among the public. Daily News said that media outlets were being asked to behave responsibly and not distort the facts resulting in damage to state and public security. The order prohibits anyone from “reporting or disseminating information that may frighten people or that internationally causes misunderstanding about the emergency situation”. The order also gives the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) the authority to obtain IP addresses from internet service providers in a bid to determine where the offending content originated from. The information can then be passed onto the police for investigation. Picture: Sanook The chief of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Yutthasak Suphasorn has noted that the pandemic is out of control in Thailand and vaccination is still low, reported Sanook in a brief report. In a similarly brief statement that is bound to attract widespread ridicule along the lines of "you don't say" Yutthasak noted that this may mean a readjustment to plans to reopen the country to foreign tourists in ten provinces come the start of October and Thailand's high season. This came as the spokesman for the economic situation brought on by Covid, citing TAT figures, insisted that tourism spending will be 850 BILLION baht this year. The October 1st reopening plan - part of PM Prayuth Chan-ocha's grand 120 day reopening master plan - applies to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Prachuap Khirikhan (Hua Hin), Phetchaburi (Cha-Am), Chonburi (Pattaya), Buriram, as well as Phuket, Surat Thani, Krabi and Phangnga where reopening is progressing according to plans already in place. Yutthasak told Sanook that the pandemic could not be controlled at the present time and he noted the CCSA were reporting 10,000 new cases daily. Actually they are starting to hit 15,000 with fears they could top 20,000 or even 30,000 cases daily according to reports in the media, notes ASEAN NOW. Many lockdowns and travel restrictions are also in place some in the same provinces that are part of the reopening plans including Bangkok. Yutthasak noted that vaccination was still low. New assessments and plans were necessary given the current situation as Thailand would have to be careful regarding safety and risk factors. He said this included the possibility of foreigners bringing in more infection. It was felt that the IB should act in the case as the issue of wearing a mask is very serious at this stage of the pandemic with the potential for a 20,000 baht fine, reported Naew Na. It was further felt that an example should be made especially as the man, an American national, had allegedly threatened violence in the store with staffers prepared to call the police after refusing him service. Picture: Naew Na The IB with the Chonburi provincial police went to Taco Bell where the incident occurred earlier this month and then to a condo on Pratumnak Hill where the man was residing. They arrested him outside and he admitted that he was the person in the video. He was named as Cxarence, 33, from the US, according to a board at IB HQ. He was taken to Muang Pattaya police station and charged with unhiegenic activity potentially spreading a dangerous infection, essentially not wearing a mask in public. Naew Na did not say how much he was fined - a first offence is generally considered to be 6,000 baht with the fine rising to 20,000 for a third offence notes ASEAN NOW. The media further reported that the American accepted what he did was wrong and that he intended to be the "eyes and ears" of society in future in promoting the wearing of masks. File photo for reference only By Jonathan Fairfield Plans to offer 10 year visas to “rich” foreigners, which would also enable them to own land and work without a work permit, are set to be put to Cabinet for approval. Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow has said the plans were already approved in principle by the Centre for Economic Situation Administration (CESA) on June 4. The proposals, which were first mooted back in April, will go before Cabinet as part of a series of plans designed to boost investment into Thailand. Previously it had been reported that the government planned to attract one million foreigners to become expats in Thailand. The would-be expats would have healthy bank balances or pension pots and would generate up to one trillion baht for the Thai economy, it was estimated. The expats would be divided into four groups: 1. ‘Rich’ global citizens 2. ‘Wealthy’ retirees 3. Digital nomads - or professionals working from Thailand 4. Highly skilled professionals ‘Rich’ global citizens would need to be able to prove income of at least $80,000 over the last two years and have $1 million in assets. They would also need to be able to invest at least 16 million baht in property or government bonds. The ‘wealthy’ retirees are defined as those who are aged 50 or over and who can invest 8 million baht in property or government baht, while also being able to show a minimum annual income of $40,000. The digital nomads would need to be earning $80,000 for the last two years or $40,000 a year and would be self employed or employed by a company overseas but which are able to use Thailand as a location to work from. They would be able to ‘work’ in Thailand without needing a work permit. They would also need to show educational qualifications of a master’s degree or higher or at least five years experience in their field. The final group are the highly skilled professionals SET-listed companies or from a company with an annual income of more than $50 million. However, it is not clear exactly what ‘land ownership’ for foreigners would mean in reality. It had previously been suggested that laws similar to the Condo Act of 2008 would be used to allow foreigners to own land plots in housing developments. Leasehold of land upto 50 years were also being considered. Thai news site Manager reported that the proposals to lure foreigners with 10 year visas and land ownership are part of wider plans designed to boost investment into Thailand. The plans, backed by the Board of Investment, would also see Thailand become a hub for the electric vehicle industry (EV). In the report buzzwords such as “Digitalization”, “Decarbonization”, “Decentralization” and “D-risk” were used to describe the plans which would help Thailand reap the benefits of moving towards clean technology. He wouldn't mind selling it but caveat emptor: anyone buying the gem might get a dose of bad luck. It was in possession of Somsak Suwannasam's dad for 30 years, said the 64 year old when Sanook went calling yesterday. But in the year he'd had it he hadn't been happy at all. He felt as if the evil eye of a spirit was looking out at him. He even had a bike accident when he went to try and find out how much it might be worth and ended up in hospital. His niece Nampetch Tingtoi, 45, said she didn't know about the stone but had a dream about a gem in which a man was in a coffin guarded by a man and a woman. The stiff rose up and said that merry hell would be rained down on anyone who messes with the stone. Then she talked to her uncle and found out he had one just like in the dream. When Somsak tried to make peace with the stone by lighting joss sticks they didn't work properly further fuelling suggestions that mysterious forces are at work. It weighs about 700 grams and he reckons it is worth 100,000 baht a carat meaning about 350 million baht. He wants someone in the industry to give him an assessment. Sanook noted its sparkle saying it was an uncut gem. Reuters file photo for reference only A meeting of 35 foreign Chambers of Commerce unanimously declared Friday the need for the Thai government to vaccinate foreign businessmen, foreign employees and their families as a matter of priority. Chairman of the JFCCT (Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce Thailand) Stanley Kang said there were 500,000 foreign businessmen an their families and 2 million foreign employees and their families. These two and a half million people need to be prioritised and vaccinated before the end of the third quarter (that's the start of October at the latest), reported Thai business media. So far the registration on the ThaiIntervac.com site had only allowed registration for those holding work permits so it did not include the families of the foreigners or people over the age of 60. Mr Kang thought a better plan would be to organise the vaccine registration utilizing passports and visas rather than work permits. It was noted at the meeting by the Thai-Chinese CoC that nationals from China are being vaccinated by their government. Mr Kang said there was agreement that Thailand is a great country to live in and invest in, but red tape experienced by foreign companies needs to be cut in order to make it more competitive with ASEAN rivals. In comments related to possible amendments to the constitution he ruled out the possibility of a referendum. He said that amendments must be reasonable. Picture: Daily News Daily News reported that "Big Police" descended on the area of the pool at the five star resort in Koh Tao yesterday where two Thai/Indian billionaires died on Friday. And now it has emerged that the couple and their son decided to change hotels because one they had previously booked had a swimming pool that was too small. In addition the husband was found first and only some time later was the wife discovered under the water in a different location. Rakeswar, 59, and Anshoo Sachathamakul, 55, were found dead at the pool on Friday. They had earlier arrived with their 34 year old son Ratich for a holiday. Yesterday, Region 8 chief Lt-Gen Kitrat Phanpetch and his entourage carried out investigations and reenactments at the scene of what staff found. Daily News Daily News had pictures of a man apparently playing the part of Rakeswar in the pool while in another top cops and local police looked in the pool while media observed. Daily News said that originally the parents and their son had arrived at room P3 in another resort. But they decided to change after finding that the pool was too small unlike what had been advertised on the website and there was construction work going on. The son contacted the resort where the incident occurred by phone to change their plans and driver Pheerathorn Janthao went to pick them all up at 11 am. They were now given what the media called a "pool villa" to stay in. At this point the son and his mother enjoyed a bottle of beer each and some food before they went to their room at 12.17. Hotel staff then got a call from the son who wanted to rent a kayak. They took his phone and bag for safekeeping. The parents then asked for the direction to the pool. Later the son asked for his possessions to be returned to him. At 3.49 pm hotel staffer Airadar Jaimen heard the son calling in a panic four or five times from the pool area. She looked out but didn't see anyone. At 4.01 pm she heard cries for help and went there and then alerted others to retrieve the body of the father who was lying unconscious on the steps leading into the pool. He was unconscious. Two fellow staffers from Myanmar came to help and rescue calls were made to a foundation. Hospital staff over the phone gave basic instructions on how to perform CPR. The key is to get 70% or more of the population vaccinated. Manager reported yesterday that the vaccine rollout was proceeding well at the meeting hall of Chiang Mai University under the auspices of Maharat Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital. It was the second day of jabs for those aged 60+ and people with underlying health conditions. The jabs and document checks were taking just 12 minutes with a thirty minute waiting period after so it was all done in three quarters of an hour. Health personnel reminded people to be well rested and hydrated before arriving. Meanwhile Nawaphol Khantawanich of the "We Love Chiang Mai" investment fund was bullish about domestic and foreign tourism in the northern capital. He said that Chiang Mai would be adopting the "sandbox" model with tourists on sealed routes come August 1st. It would all be done with proper operating procedures and participating outlets and be limited to Muang district as well as three others: Mae Rim, Mae Taeng and Doi Tao. He anticipated that more than 70% of the population in these districts would be vaccinated by mid July ahead of the big reopening. It gives an indication of how the process may be for non-Thais. They'd need to show proof they were travelling like an air ticket, their passport, proof of vaccination and pay 50 baht. There are four places or kinds of places to apply to though they may need to register in advance. These are at international disease control Suvarnabhumi airport, the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Unit in Nonthaburi, the Urban Institute for Disease Prevention and Control in Bang Khen (northern Bangkok) or the department of disease control offices elsewhere. Picture: Spring News In the clearest statement yet about foreigners getting vaccinated in Thailand the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration spokesman has said that it is definitely going to happen. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said that foreigners should register for their Covid-19 jabs from August. He said that it was true that Thais would go first but foreigners then the homeless or tramps would go next, reported Spring News. "All people in Thailand will be vaccinated irrespective of who they are," he affirmed yesterday in a press call with medical staff. He was specifically asked about both foreigners and the homeless or "rayron" and he confirmed that the vaccination program was for everyone, period. He was slightly more evasive about questions whether people could roll up for a vaccination without registering. He urged people to register as this was best for data gathering and monitoring.
